Golfer Teed Off over Inscrutable eBay Fees

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
I am a casual buyer/seller on eBay. On since '07 with 750 transactions, mostly golf equipment for my own use.

eBay works well functionally but is very lacking in transparency.

My question is: what exactly is the commission rate I'm being charged? It appears it is 13%. I just sold an item for $164 and got a $143 payout. How can I find out what I am being charged?

Very well stated, ebay and transparency in the same sentence should only be used if the word lacking is involved.

Now try figuring out those fees if you have thousands of transactions a year and want to do your taxes.

I'm pretty sure some other members of this forum may have an answer because there's no way we can't have this information available to us.  I have been digging myself for that same answer.

Time to break out your THIRD GRADE Math Book.

$143 div. by $164 ... IS 87 percent of the gross amount.

No problem to see here.

And people wonder why "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader" was so popular.

He doesn't say whether $164 was the total with shipping or without.
If with shipping, he got an extra $10 or so in his payout, because average club shipping is $10-$12, and he got 88.whatever% of his shipping cost, which he would then use to pay his shipping.

If
you want to see all the details ... on a laptop and starting at Seller Hub ...
1. Hover over Payments.
2. Click on All Transactions.
3. Find the order you want to look at.
4. The fees are shown in the Transaction Summary box. The FVF is shown below on the same screen and you can click on the Order Number (under Transaction Details) to see the total amount the customer paid including sales tax and shipping.

BTW...a "commission" is earned. A fee isn't.
ebay charges fees.

Anywhere on any of your Sales pages that you can find the Order Number (looks like this: 27-06986-60997), you can follow the links to get the transaction breakdown.

@ebayout
It has to be with shipping, either ''free'' or a separate charge, won't matter.  He received $143 which is the correct amount for a $164 purchase.

EBay will always include the shipping in their fees, even if it's a separate charge.  If the item was $164 PLUS shipping ($10-$12), the fee would be higher and the amount received by the OP would be $9-$11 higher, roughly.  He didn't say he got $152.  EBay's part would also go up about a buck fifty.

For EVERYONE in Ebay's MP, you can see ALL the details of ANY transaction in your Seller Hub under the Payment's Tab.  Granted some of these reports and screens could be better, but that doesn't change the fact that the information is there.  Simply because a seller doesn't look doesn't mean Ebay is hiding anything from any seller.

For those not yet in MP, all they need to do is look at their Seller Monthly Invoice details or look at the fee page so you know the percentage of the fees you should be charged.  Again, it isn't hidden.  It is available to anyone that takes a moment to look.
