The Naked Truth About eBay Issues

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
I noticed a couple of months ago that eBay was mistakenly labelling many of my items as "Adult Only Verification Required." I've spoken to numerous customer service reps who have all agreed my items are not xrated.

Not only have none of them offered a solution, but I receive bizarre emails addressing problems that I've never claimed (I received two of them today) and NOT addressing the real issue.

I feel like I'm being punked. I know I'm not the only one on eBay having items listed as "adult only" which aren't - I've checked other sellers listing and have found the same thing.

Can you possibly research this problem and see if eBay ever plans to address it?
Thank you,
L.

“.. see if eBay ever plans to address it? ”

They have. And not just for the naughty bits. They decided it is cheaper to blanket sanction any perceived or alleged appearance of ‘impropriety’ than it would be to encompass fact in any ‘investigation’. It’s eBay. Facts don’t matter.

And they won’t ‘fix’ that even if they acknowledge it’s ‘wrong’. Not until or unless compelled to.

Any resultant seller alienation Is dismissed as acceptable collateral damage, even though there are other remedies and avenues of redress for any so ‘wronged’. eBay is counting on that medicine being more bitter than the disease. And in case of an eBay generated ‘sellerdemic’, they even have that legal pathway obfuscated.

So, with their signature hypocritical flair, that posture becomes dirtier than anything they are trying to legislate to the red velvet curtained back room. Truly hardcore.

The answer itself is plain (naked) as it is with everything ELSE on eBay.

"many of my items as "Adult Only Verification Required." .... and the issue is that the people that run eBay themselves arent ADULTS.

Look at the 2 Walmart goofs - are they grown ups? Look at Sleeping Griff - does he act responsibly (like an adult) ?

Its easier to pay some guy in India $5 to write a program to block all items then to look at items individually

The same thing happens in VERO issues, in returns, and everywhere else. Just take the path of least resistance and work, and if it hurts a few sellers it doesnt matter - they are just NOISE anyway. All those "sneakerheads" more then make up any losses that come from any issue that would/could arise.

eBay is run by children - short term planning, poor execution and when caught with your hand in the cookie jar - just lie.

What does one expect?

You need to figure out what key word in your listing title is triggering the ebay censorship/policing bot. I can't use the word ''HORNY'' toad in the title to list a horned toad lizard stone carving without it requiring adult only verification. By the way, the word horny can be used in the item description without triggering the censorship bot.

Ebay rejected listing items using the words ''IVORY'' white as well as ''DINOSAUR BONE'' in the titles--even thou there is a raw stone area specifically for dinosaur bone.

I was told I had to adapt my titles to avoid the ebay title bot. That is a work around although customers who search using my censored words will never find my listings.

So I'm offered a collection of early 1970's Mayfair and Penthouse magazines. According to eBays own policy on adult material "The following magazines and books can be listed in the Magazines category as long as the listing does not contain nude images or explicit content: Playboy, Playgirl, Mayfair, and Penthouse"

After listing almost 100 of them eBay removed all of them in less than 24hrs. I called eBay to ask why they had removed them and the agent told me that they were removed because they are not allowed on eBay. I referred to the policy above on eBay's website but the agent seemed completely unaware of it. I was passed to trust and safety team who after some deliberation reinstated them all.

The next day I had 12 of the same mags removed so I had to go through the same process again to get them reinstated. 3 days later another five removed. Then another two and so on until I got fed up calling eBay and just left it. Then I got a 7-day ban. Called up several times got different answers. Some agents wouldn't even acknowledge eBay's own policy so I hung up and called back.

I've been told that if there's a nipple showing on the cover it will be removed. Aside from the reality that nipples are not offensive. I'm told that this policy is to stop young children viewing sexual images. One search for fake vagina or dildo and you will find much more explicit imagery than vintage sex magazines. Also kids can go on line and see porn at the drop of a hat. They certainly don't go to eBay in search of sexual images.

I also heard that PayPal that has a problem with sexual images. I asked PayPal about adult material. They told me I cannot accept payments for sexual items yet so many sex mag shop in the UK use PayPal for payments. Abebooks allows PayPal to be used to buy vintage sexual magazines. Etsy allows sex magazines. Does eBay know that?

I don't understand eBay logic. There is very little difference between Playboy, Playgirl, Mayfair, and Penthouse and countless other magazines of the same nature. I've even had sunbathing magazines from the 1940s and nudist magazines from the 1950s removed by eBay. It really is pathetic.

On eBay.com there is apparently an adult section. Why is there not one in the UK? Why is eBay giving up all this revenue?

We used to do Estate Sales and we had ten ''Tijuana Bibles'' that a family family wanted sold but not at their sale.  Tijuana Bibles are small vintage ''comic'' books with SRONG sexual content and cartoons.

We listed them on Ebay and they were taken off after two days because of ''violation of Ebay policies''.  However I used the SAME descriptive terms and placed the items in the SAME categories where other Tijuana Bibles were being sold, but were NOT removed.

I contacted Ebay and received canned response answers.  I contacted them again with item numbers of the exact same items I had listed that remained on Ebay that were being sold by other sellers... and again got canned responses... violation of Ebay policies.

I can only sum up Ebay's behavior in one word... ARBITRARY.

eBay is definitely Lost in a Lost World. I am just sitting and see what happens but I am also moving over to other venues. I love PayPal (been with them since 2001) and they want to drag me in to MP and that is the final nail in the coffin.
