eBay Results in Search Engines Not Leading to eBay Listings?

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
I haven't had a sale in April, last month the store was busy and had record numbers. Inventory is fresh - it happens but today I was curious so,...

I looked up an item on eBay, looked up same item in Duck Duck Go Go search engine and clicked on listing - it took me to a page saying they can't find the listing.

I've noticed this before - search for something in a search engine and click on an entry and nothing, even for a generic search where there are plenty of listings for a search.

I hope eBay isn't paying to place in the search engine because it is and has been a dud for at least 6 months. How hard is it to have active links? If I were a search engine, I'd toss these results as junk.
Lynne

ebay listings that appear in search engine search results end up on a dead link over 50% of the time.  It used to be much worse. When ebay changed good til canceled, google started showing some ebay results.   Another huge fail on ebay's part,, ebay listings almost never appear on the first page of google shopping results!.. Poshmark , the real real, mercari, even offerup.. they all get good placement in search results .  Ebay however, does not get favorable search placement results. Ebay tried to thumb it's nose at google for years. Google holds the cards, they own the algorithm. Ebay was short sighted and the results have penalized all sellers on ebay's platform.

Sometimes sales are good, sometimes steady, sometimes they fall off a cliff.  That is a really normal cycle on Ebay for all the years I've been there.  Every now and again someone posts what they think causes it and people take a look at that.  Then it goes away for awhile to come back sometime in the future and it is the same cycle over and over again.

I've never figured it out.  I've always suspected the search engine, that is the likely place to place blame.  But no proof that this is what is causing it.  Mine fell off the cliff late last month and the first part of this month.  They are now climbing out of that.

On a normal year I would place the blame on people too busy to shop because they are trying to get their taxes done.  But unless they weren't aware that IRS extended the deadline to next month that doesn't hold for this year.

Hard telling where the tea leaves are falling this year.

Usually it's ebay, but not this time. Anyone who created and manages own website knows this.

eBay for google is just another site. Every link on google has to mature, it does not show up in google results for at least 2 weeks and even then not on first page (unless your item is very rare). That's why eBay introduced "good until cancelled". Though it works opposite on ebay site and that's why eBay users (including me) don't like it.

When you cancel your listing it's stays on ebay as ended. First two/three months google shows ended listing, later eBay deletes it from own database and google continues to show dead link for at least half a year.

When you relist your item, google still shows dead link because your new link is too young and has less reputation than the old one.

Ebay has huge problems with schema/google, that's why they introduced "item specifics", but that's another story.

^^
I always place the blame on tax filings.  The pace picks up in the fall.  But you have to be on multiple platforms.  I'm even looking at Depop as a platform.  If I had the storage space or a storage unit, I would build out my own shopping website, but that also requires that you be on multiple social sites like Instagram.  not willing to go that far.

"How hard is it to have active links?"

It's especially difficult when sellers continually utilize the myth of ending and manually relisting their items as a form of "SEO."

Google only indexes active listings.  In other words, every single eBay listing that appears in Google was active at the time it was indexed.

However, when a seller ends and relists the listing, it forces eBay to generate a new item number -- because it is now an entirely new listing.

eBay's item number is the basis for each individual listing URL (web address).

When a potential buyer then finds the old listing in Google, it has either sold or has been completely relisted.

This is the entire purpose behind "Out of stock," which enables sellers of products in multi-quantity to maintain a "static URL" for their listings when inventory goes down to zero -- for up to six months -- thereby avoiding the problem described above.

It is critical for sellers to understand that eBay has no control over this process.  They do.

Now as far as a lack of *rankings* within Google's organic search results, eBay has everything to do with that.  But that's an entirely separate subject.

The mechanics of maintaining a dynamic search engine dependent upon the ‘goodwill’ of their sources coupled with a nimble and robust enough refresh capability have never yet existed to provide consistent and accurate results.

It may serve better the client with a more stable data set, but for the chaos that is eBay’s potshot of crossed indexing? Maybe every microsecond now and then.
