Reader Takes Issue with eBay Label of Most Reputable Seller

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
I am beginning to believe all the comments on EcommerceBytes about eBay's favoritism for Chinese sellers. A case in point is attached.

I purchased an item from a Chinese seller on May 22nd. This is an item that is not available in the U.S. On May 29th, the item was finally shipped. As of today, it has not been received and is still sitting in Shanghai according to postal ninja.

The amazing part can be seen in the attached pic. As you can see, this seller sports only a 91% positive feedback rating and is touted as a Top-Rated Seller "One of eBay's most reputable sellers." The seller has had 34 negative ratings in the last 30 days (16% negative feedback). They only had 6 at the time of my purchase.

For eBay to show that this seller is "One of eBay's most reputable sellers" is outrageous. As a U.S. seller since 1998, I've had one negative feedback in all that time and I am also shown as "One of eBay's most reputable sellers."

Either this standard isn't very high, or eBay gives Chinese sellers wide latitude as to what is acceptable performance.

Thanks for letting me vent!
B.

Standard isn't very high as it changes daily depending on who and how much you pay.

Rbay - being California’s biggest mafia - is purely Pay for Play.

Pay for enough listings or exposure and you can do what ever you please.

In days of old, feedback actually meant something so what you saw/read had validity.

Today it’s a one sided child’s game, with eBay acting as the school bully.

Certain sellers always get a pass at the rules and policies ala Managed Payments, this is no different.

I stand corrected- on eBay you get hidden or threatened by the people in charge, in the real mafia you get buried at sea or put in a car compactor...... take your pick

Feedback hasn't been a factor in the Top Rated Seller designation for years.  No matter where you are from.

But usually the CAUSES of the bad feedback show up in the metrics that ARE measured (late deliveries, no tracking, open cases, etc.)  And there's a time delay in changing your status, waiting for an evaluation period where prior actions sent you plummeting.

The seller standards are here: https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/selling/seller-levels-performance-st
andards?id=4080

You
will only see the word ''feedback'' on the page where it relates to being a Power Seller.

Ya, I got ripped off by a Chinese Ebay seller.
Listing clearly stated 10 for the money.
I received 2.
The ensuing emails through Ebay resulted in a non comical dialogue disconnected from reality...all in English yet meaningless gibberish.
This Chinese contagion must be exterminated from the Ebay site.
Cleanse it like never before.

The Top-Rated seller program discriminates against sellers of less expensive small light weight items. To remain competitive, sellers in Stamps or Collectibles categories cannot afford to add the cost of sending an inexpensive $5 item with tracking. In the mind of eBay, it is "one size fits all".

Some offshore sellers list their location as in the United States. Unsuspecting buyers are slapped with foreign transaction fees by PayPal. Will Managed Payments correct this by slapping offshore sellers with the new "international sales" fee or will it be assessed only to US sellers?

Maybe ebay uses the term "One of eBay's most reputable sellers" simply as a marketing ploy to entice or reassure buyers.  eBay Marketing: 101

Clearly the seller doesn't always have such a high negative rate or they would not have a percentage of 91%.  Without giving consideration to how many transaction the seller handles, it is very hard to say what is going on from the limited information here.  Simply because they are a seller from China should not be the issue.  It that is the driving force, whether or not this was the only seller with the product, maybe purchasing from them wasn't the right thing to do.

I would just suggest the OP opens an INR,  SOON!  There is extra time since it is an international sale, but the time may have already passed since it is more than 60 days ago.

Have little to no sympathy from people who buy from Chinese sellers and then have issues. Stop supporting them.

Excellent point.  They are here because there is a market for them.  If that were to change, they would be gone.

This is not unusual at all for eBay over the course of its life as a venue. It is business as usual. I remember back in the day when I sold there including having a store. They decided to have a contest with three levels of store owners (we could nominate our own store if we wanted to so I did) where they would look at your store, determine the 'best' one and you could win a prize of some can of hands on coaching or something. Hard to remember all the details except this one. One the day the winners were announced, I felt a touch sad because I hadn't won but figured that a lot had been in the contest. So I go and look at the winners store. I was dumbfounded to say the least. If this guy's store was the best for all the small sellers I was working too hard He had about 20 items in his store (I had around 5000), no real categories. It was a store that looked like a newbie had just opened it and wasn't even done with the basics, yet his store was being held up as the beacon for what sellers should want to achieve!!!!  But even then, that was eBay's way.

Same as the 6 weeks that the stores were in regular search and we were all making money like crazy. Then it was suddenly turned off with Meg's excuse that buyers didn't like it! Like excuse me, did we hear/read that right? Why had we been selling so much to people who didn't like it. No I think they were losing money from the sellers that didn't have stores and maybe they were paying a bigger FVF. Something was losing eBay money and that seems to be the only way that they make decisions on who they will promote and then they find a new excuse to stop things.

It is always just excuses. Nothing that has anything to do with reality.

As a Top Rated eBay seller with over 9.700 Positive Feedback, I have complained to eBay that I object that other sellers are "One of eBay's most reputable sellers" as I am, but the sellers that I complained about to eBay have, in my opinion, too many Negative Feedback to be Top Rated.  I say only Negative Feedback because Neutral Feedback does not affect a seller's rating.  I think the primary problem is that these sub par sellers have a very large number of sales and so because eBay uses percentages to determine top rated these sub par sellers are able to avoid a lesser rating.  In the case of this article, keep in mind that eBay is taking into consideration shipping delays due to the virus.

Buy from China??  You have to be nuts or very desperate.

I pay no attention to what eBay classifies at "Top Rated".  In fact I pay no attention to what eBay has to say at all.  If I want to hear untruths, I will listen to the politicians.

eBay China they probably just give their account manager a "present" and they can do whatever they want.
