Is eBay Banning Bullion and Autos at the End of the Year?

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
Is it true that eBay is eliminating the sales of bullion, coins, wine, motor vehicles and adult items at the end of the year?

If you have to use managed payments to do business on eBay and you can't use them with these kinds of items, then it seems that no one will be able to sell them.
Gerald

Note from the Editor: In the absence of information coming from eBay about Managed Payments, sellers continue to ask questions and raise concerns. Note we addressed the issue of excluded categories in this important post on May 13th.

I hope that eBay really is banning those categories, so that good sellers will MOVE AWAY from eBay and on to other selling sites.  Or who knows?  Maybe someone will be bold enough to create yet another platform that reflects the ORIGINAL eBay.

Yes, be serious.  No business has ever made self-destructive decisions.  That's why every business ever started is still with us today.

While Walmart has shut down its grocery app and consolidated it with the main Walmart app (to great success), it's interesting to note that eBay has done the opposite with it's primary app used by both marketplace buyers and sellers, and its eBay Motors app.

Last December eBay re-launched a standalone Motors app (and continues to allocate spend and resources to develop it, recently adding video upload capability directly in the app).

Pin this on the "Pure Speculation" board, but unlike the Classifieds business sale that's closer to a certainty (more an "if" than "when", further complicated by COVID), but much like the rumors of eBay selling off its S. Korea business, we won't exactly be surprised to see a press release sometime in the next 12-18 months that EBAY has sold off its eBay Motors business either, particularly the UK units where eBay Motors, Gumtree Motors and Motors.co.uk car sales platforms are deeply intertwined.

Crazy timing.

Multiple reports this afternoon that KKR PE-backed German Media group Axel Springer has submitted a bid for eBay's Classifieds business (including Gumtree).

I am not sure why you would need to ask "if this is true" when no one said it in the first place.

It is true ebay will have "most sellers" accepting managed payments by the end of the year but obviously that would not extend to categories where logistics, customs requirements, or legalities require more regulation and thus are delaying acceptance of managed payments in those areas.

For example one of the things you mentioned is coins and bullion. These are challenging logistically and were also excluded from the global shipping program as well, but are still allowed to be sold on ebay.

I am pretty confident that while ebay may choose not to opt them into managed payments yet there is also no reason to close them. Instead ebay will likely just leave them as paypal only until they are ready to comply with the regulations for selling those items.

Closing all of those categories would upset a lot of people with nothing for ebay to gain, but lots of profit to lose. It makes more sense to leave the categories as they are.
