eBay Seller Concerned about Security of Banking Information

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
I just spoke with managed payments team because my account cannot be verified (like everyone else lol). Disturbingly the agent reassured me that last week eBay made it possible to see all of our banking information and account info that was previously blacked out for security reasons as promised.

The agent stated that their computer screens were being recorded to help track down bad agents that steal the information!

This is opposite of what eBay has assured us in the past about the safety and security of managed payments system. What prevents a disgruntled employee or their boyfriend/girls side ect, from snapping a screen shot it taking a picture of the computer screen of my ss #, checking account, routing etc,?!

The agent stated that it was necessary to help the onboarding of people to the program. She was a long term employee that I have talked to over the years in merchant support, so I completely believe her and am protecting her job by not naming her... At what point will eBay be held responsible for their lack of ability to do anything right?
C.

Gesh more nervous nellies. """""GET A SEPARATE""""" account for EBAY ONLY. Have Weekly deposits to it. Then move the money to another account. How hard is it?? When you give anyone or any business your information THERE IS NO GUARANTEE IT IS SAFE. If you think it is I have a bridge in Alaska I would like to sell you.

Under No Circumstances should anyone be giving anyone or thing their Most Important information.
Using STRIPE Payments eliminates this. Entirely.

If you sell on ebay you WILL GIVE out that information or you will be selling somewhere else. So stripe won't work.

This information is encrypted on Ebay and always has been.  Ebay has successfully maintained and protected financial info on sellers for 25 years.  All sellers give or have given Ebay financial info as a back up payment source on their accounts.  Ebay requires this for sellers to sell.

As others have suggested, I too feel it is a good idea to have a separate [from personal] for attaching to Ebay, Etsy, PP, Amazon, or any other site that needs an attachment to a checking account.  Just easier and cleaner accounting and security.

If you don't want to go into MP, that is fine.  Own it, there doesn't need to be any reason other than you don't want to do it.

Dear FeelingFroggy;
That's Precisely my point Sweetheart.
All this Yammering about the shortcomings of Ebay's payment system are SOLVED if Ebay puts STRIPE Payments in the game.

Ebay is the epitome of : Not-Ready-For-Prime-Time.
Ebay is the epitome of : how NOT to do this kind of thing.
Ebay is the epitome of : why other venues are better.
Get out of Ebay or STOP COMPLAINING.
I am no longer on Ebay and my ulcers have healed  :o)
The basic concept of Ebay (as intended by Pierre Omidyar) is Good.
The execution of Ebay is Evil.

You do realize that the OP was talking about signing up and being verified to mangled payments don't you. Has nothing to do with what a buyer uses to pay with.

''This information is encrypted on Ebay and always has been.  Ebay has successfully maintained and protected financial info on sellers for 25 years. ''

Ebay was hacked a few years ago, and the CEO decided not to tell the public for 3 months. They then offered to pay for financial monitoring for one year, noting passwords, personal data and SSN may have been compromised.

That would make the opening statement false.

Any site can be hacked.  They are all at risk 24/7, without exception.

Ebay was hacked once in early 2014.  Fortunately for those that were members at the time NO financial data was lost.

It didn't take them 3 months to announce it, it was a little better than one month.  But then if that is of significance to you, do a little research and you'll find that sites that get hacked don't know they have been hacked right away most times.  It is something they discover a bit later as systems are being reviewed or whatever.  The big hack of Target took a while as did others.

I know it is popular to hold Ebay to different standards.  Your choice is simple.  You don't have to use Ebay for anything.  Hate them that much or don't trust them enough, then simply walk away.  Leave the stress of the site you hate behind you and move on to things that suit your needs better.

“ Your choice is simple. You don't have to use Ebay for anything.”

Is it?

When did it become reasonable to expect that a company that wants to attract and keep customers should be given a ‘pass’ to act to alienate those who fund their shenanigans by effectively stating my way or the highway? Is that what they’re teaching in effective customer relations classes these days? That it’s ok to say, bite me, we don’t need you?

Or is it more reasonable to take the position that everything that’s been noted about the abhorrence of eBay’s position/reactions/processes has no hope of relief, therefore requires either tolerant acceptance or silent abandonment?

In context, it’s one thing to conclude that ‘everybody’s vulnerable’, but quite another to apply that as a excuse when such vulnerability is not itself protected against with due attention and assurance of understanding it’s importance.

So...this is the customer’s issue to solve then? And the solution is to leave? Guess that’s one way to make everything all rainbows and lollipops. Eliminate dissent by showing it the door, vice address and correct it’s basis.

Same approach recently taken by eBay to silence it’s critics here, wasn’t it?

Well said.

Blogs, forums et al are a place to to voice your opinions and feelings. I suppose by the same token, if you don't like a site because the majority of members don't share your feelings, well maybe you should leave?

Oh, I don't hate eBay, I hate people that defend the indefensible. Most corporations are giant monoliths, they do not even notice the customers, only the numbers. Ebay is different, it is evil. We know this from their past actions against the little guys, doing the exact opposite of what is best for their customers, the sellers. That they have to pay people to defend them online is the best sign of their problems.

As advised, set up a separate bank account and keep it empty.
Baddies can't steal what isn't there.
Use PayPal as a payment method for any ebay invoices ( for postage labels etc ).

Sorry e-bay. They need sellers we don't need them and there diversity that attacked customers is already being lost. Lots of other places to sell. I'm either off e-bay by the 15th or business as usual. I could care less I'll likely save a lot of money not paying e-bay fees on shipping and now they try to access even more personnel information to control sellers. I don't think so. Sellers will have to close bank accounts before it's over and more will move on. I use to have a few hundred listings but because of there greed over the years down to 40 now so e-bay screws themselves with control & greed. Guess who will really lose when Sellers listings are gone. E-bay!!
