The 10 Demandments of Online Sellers

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
I wrote this up after a particularly challenging day as a way to coach myself regarding expectations of selling online. Some of your readers might get a kick out it or have points to add.

The10 Demandments of being an eCommerce seller (or what you can expect, every day, from eCommerce shoppers and buyers):

1st. Low ball offers for your listings that have no context to market prices.

2nd. Questions that are answered in the description or title.

3rd. Post-delivery discounts and demands veiled in language threatening your seller feedback ratings.

4th. Scam returns from buyers with zero sense of moral responsibility of spending other people's money.

5th. Rudeness, disrespect, indifference, ignorance, often combined in a few words in customers emails.

6th. Delivery requests unproportionable to any reality.

7th. Management and or control of carriers delivery schedules, policies, or personnel.

8th. Requests for information without a thank you or acknowledgement of your time and effort.

9th. Shoppers who shop, consume your precious time, and who never buy and have zero sense of the cost to your time bank.

10th. Damaged, lost, deductions, and expenses in all of the above categories in which the financial recovery is at a time spend exponentially greater than the loss.

Amen...especially the ultra lazy creeps who use their iPhone and NEVER open the listing for details.

Promote No 2 to No 1
Number 1 I can just laugh at them and let them time out.
2 infuriates me.
Even worse when they open a return case for something that was described in the listing, and you still have to pay return postage.

On Etsy they no longer bother with #3, they just leave bad feedback then negotiate to have it removed.

With Etsy's ODR set at 99+% 3+ stars ratings, (although at the moment it's suspended because of Covid) it's already nearly impossible to stay in compliance, and the customers realize that.

It is sad that many eBay sellers will sooner or later encounter ALL these issues.  This is what happens when the Seller / Buyer relationship is no longer 50/50.

Another one of my favorites--"Please post more photos".  No. I'm not your photo monkey. And has anyone ever seen those efforts turn into a sale?

Sounds just like the operating agenda of just about any ecommerce site on the internet. All the same, some just worse than others. If its so bad the biggest question is WHY THE HECK ARE YOU STILL DOING BUSINESS ON THEM. Whining doesn't get anything fixed. Taking your items somewhere else has a better chance.

Experienced everyone-of those as a long time online seller. You can eliminate #3 and #4 by selling on your OWN website where you are in control and crybaby feedback threats are meaningless and you can actually say NO to scam returns. Quit feeding these platforms that bite the hands that feed them.

I agree with Careerseller. It was hard work but I am so glad that I took the time to build and launch my own site  FREE AT LAST!

I'm glad I left Ebay as a seller. I felt that my control was slipping away, and my status as a "kitchen table"  seller meant nothing to Ebay. I nicknamed myself "Miss Obsolete."

Regarding what Rexford stated about being asked to post more photos, at least once a month I get a request for a photo of the back, or other angle, of an item in a factory sealed box. Since I sell collectibles, which for the most part decrease in value if they are not NRFB, I have to tell the people there's no way I'm going to remove them from the box (while thinking they probably wouldn't buy it anyway).

Then there's the people who ask, "Is it a counterfeit?" It's all I can do to not tell them they must be dumber than a pet rock since if I was selling counterfeits, I'd hardly admit to that fact. To those people I always respond that they should buy from another seller that they feel is more trustworthy.

Then there are the people who have never purchased a thing from me and ask if they can get a discount IF they buy more then one item. One gal was looking to buy a bunch of rare items and when I agreed to give her a small discount, she responds that she was hoping to get free shipping, too (which she never mentioned originally).

Add to the list those who pay for an item then immediately want to cancel the order.  Like the buyer who just demanded to cancel an order for red ladybug bag clips because he thought the listing was for green frog clips.  Getting real tired of eBay keeping the 30ยข per order fee for these cancelling bozos who don't even bother looking at the photos let alone reading the description.

Yeah I have encountered all those buyers already, and I haven't even been selling that long.

Not sure exactly what sort of collectibles you sell but I've seen the same with action figures.  If you have an appropriate convention in your area, just save your best stuff for that.  Whatever on you leave on eBay should be priced at a premium to compensate for having to deal with those idiots.

You need to stop selling on eBay.

Just how much abuse are you really willing to take? Is it a 50%-50% split between eBay on one side & the buyers on the other?

What a nightmare.

As to #'s 2 & 9.  Although I have come to expect it and try to just shake my head and move on:  I had a shopper (notice I didn't say buyer) just this week send 17 (yes SEVENTEEN) ebay messages about an item and then crickets.  Amazing!

My eBay is nothing like the OP's

I can usually count my yearly eBay problems on 1 hand. . . . . .
