Uneven Media Coverage of eBay and Amazon Price Glitches

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
I saw your response in the article titled "Another Cockup Leaves eBay Buyers Fuming" about Amazon having a glitch and you posted a link to Business Insider.

Maybe you could do an article about why every little problem on Amazon gets media coverage, while at the same time, eBay has problems like this daily with site errors and checkout issues and not a peep anywhere. Even major issues like Hasbro and Reebok recently there wasn't much of a peep anywhere.

All you ever see about eBay in the media is how great they are, their "innovations", their "AI", and how their stock is always a Buy. Are they protected from any media scrutiny? It almost seems so.

That's an interesting question. It does seem from the news media that eBay doesn't get the same press for its technical disasters as Amazon.

Maybe it's a simple as Amazon is the big guy in eCommerce and the news media would rather feature them, both good and bad I might add. Maybe the news media doesn't see eBay as being that interesting or important to the rest of the public? Good heavens, even Wall Street has blinders on all the time.

ebay still carries that garage sale connotation, albeit a $25B garage sale.
"It's just ebay…"

The media usually covers stories that people care about.

Sadly, ebay is no longer newsworthy.

@TB

I guess you don't read this forum much.

Amazon articles get crickets while a article about eBay gets pounded on by the masses. . . .

I can see what a few of you are saying. Maybe it is partially because eBay is in fact an afterthought and doesn't bring in the clicks and views. But for such a large company you never really see anything negative about them anywhere. Big companies that screw up at the extent eBay constantly does should get coverage.

The INDUSTRY doesnt consider eBay to be a "real" anything.

eBay is a dust speck compared to Amazon.

When Amazon makes a move it changes the industry, when eBay does something it just enriches their own back accounts, and lowers the amount of scotch over at Walkers.

Amazon has warehouses, planes, trucks, hundreds of thousands of employees - eBay has the BOD and GRIFF - and some shmoes in the Phillipeans.

Tool - when Ina posts a topic condemning Amazon it does get traction here - its just that Amazons errors are just that - errors, eBay self inflicts the errors - thats the difference.

The press tends to report unusual occurrences. Because eBay errors occur regularly, they are less likely to be reported.

Amazon is building their own cargo company. They say is to get products to customers on time but they will surely compete with FedEx and UPS.
Meanwhile EBay is making sellers big and small worry about what comes next.
I do vintage and collectibles and was shocked to see a lot.of sellers from other countries are gone. Looks like they went Instagram and Etsy.

I  usually have the opposite complaint why are news people always telling you about how great Amazon is and how to return stuff for free and how to only shop there.  The how to steal from sellers via returns was the 2 drinkers on the today show a couple years ago. Locally they constantly go on about it. I could see if there were some local tax or employment from them here but they have no presence in this state and we have no marketplace tax here yet. I think they get a lot of free press.
But agree Amazon has one sale, ebay has a daily "sale". Amazon has rare buyer glitches. Ebay has daily buyer glitches.
They both have serious unresolved seller glitches which neither care about equally.

Outside of Toolguy, how many people care about eBay nowadays? It used to be, in the early to mid-2000s, eBay was probably the most reported on company in the news. Then JD's policies started the downward death spiral. Amazon is in the news because they actually make sales, plus all their other endeavors which are newsworthy. What does eBay do? Oh, I forgot, they have their patent to tell you when you stink.

Wenig is a darling of CNBC... the stock channel... he gives deer in the headlights interviews & in exchange the media doesn't cover eBay's glitches to protect the stock price.

@iheartjacksparrow

I'm not alone!

There are MILLIONS of people who still use eBay, you're just not one of them. . .

Hope this Helps (an old saying from Madbezos)

Madbezos, was James Roberge. A Professor from Temple U who taught Statistics, for some reason he had a hard on for eBay! He passed away in 2012

Amazon = Coke, eBay = RC Cola

When Coke does something - like buy a company that sells bottled water - that gives legitimacy to the "water business".

When RC does something - if ever - then MAYBE it gets a blurb on the local news

THAT is how small eBay is compared to Amazon. You can see it from how eBay behaves and how eBay RESPONDS to what Amazon does.

Whether its 30 day returns or anything else - all eBay does is copy (poorly) they NEVER innovate.

eBay is simply the Enron of "ecommerce" (even though ecommerce really isnt their focus anymore).

@pace306

"Amazon = Coke, eBay = RC Cola"

Not true, you're giving eBay too much value!

Coca Cola is only 8.5 times larger then RC Cola (Snapple Group)

Amazon is 30+ times larger then eBay.

You're synopsis would be accurate if you included Paypal with eBay. . .
