eBay Seller Says Returns Have Become Out of Control

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
It is about 4 1/2 months into the new selling year. There have been ups and downs. But one thing in particular has struck me as pretty crazy. I am already at half or more of my total returns from the last 2 years!

Is anyone else getting returns like crazy?

I sell in all categories. Have been doing so for years. Only difference is the auto-accept on eBay's end whenever a return is started. There is not even a chance to communicate with buyers prior to them opening a return. It is just accepted and a label is generated on the buyer's end to send back.

Most of my returns have been buyer changed their mind or ordered by mistake. I know returns are a part of this business, but it is getting a bit excessive now.

Sincerely,
Not surprised at this point

make a sale - eBay makes money!
return an item - eBay makes money!
seller rating bad - eBay makes money!
CEO lies to WS - eBay makes money!
Fake Promoted Listings - eBay makes money!
VERO takedowns - eBay makes money!

On eBay, despite the delusional lieing CEO and his verbal discharges, sellers are NOT something eBay cares (1) iota about - as long as people are desperate to sell things online.

For most sellers, Amazon isnt a good fit - try selling a used part, a used t-shirt, a Sony DSLR, or a Pioneer car radio - %99 impossible due to gating/blocking.

In strolls eBay and boom! there's a market and you get to sell your item and even (not with the greedy eBay CEO these days lol) make some money.

So DW has you by the throat - he knows it, the BOD knows it, Uncle Grifter knows it (as a former seller), Mary Oh Hubris knows it - everyones in on it - except the seller.

eBay in 2019 "allows" you to use their platform to make money - but they get to decide IF, WHEN, and HOW MUCH.

Returns .... eBay NEEDS to keep buyers happy - in their mind - sellers are scum, buyers are princes.

Therefore, no matter what you say, even if GOD him/her/itself vouches for you - you did wrong. So you've been here for 10+ yrs - so what? So you have a perfect record, so what? So you have glowing feedback, so what?

What counts is that eBay knows you need them, and therefore they can decide what happens next.

eBay should have NOTHING to do with returns - its not their business. But if they can insert themselves into the process (see Ms Hubris)(its her job as eBay counsel) they can amend the TOS and give themselves UNLIMITED power.

eBay never saw the item you sent, they dont know what you got back - they know ...... (wait for it) NOTHING. So the people that know nothing - tell you (via that TOS) that they can force you to take any kind of return (magic SNAD)(patent pending) any time they want.

So the buyer stole from you - so what? eBay doesnt think stealing is bad - they LOVE doing it. If they can do it to you - so can the buyer.

eBay encourages returns because it only hurts YOU. If it GOD FORBID 1000x hurt THEM - there would be NO returns, at all.

If you get to many returns, eBay can "dock you" an extra %4 VIG (Hubris & Co the loansharks open for business) since you are a "BAD SELLER".

When you learn how to do business from watching Soprano reruns - this is the best you can do. You have $5 billion (stolen from small sellers) sitting offshore, and you have the MIGHTY HEROES OF SAN JOSE (eBay legal team) to steam roll anyone who dares get in the way!

Returns happen because eBay likes them, profits from them, hates sellers, and is the most crooked ecommerce platform ever.

If you have too many "buyer changed their mind" returns. then most likely the buyers found it cheaper with an ad from ebay. Expect that to be the new normal.

Holy yikes! On one of my accounts, I just had my first return in maybe 5 years (false item defective — got it back and it works just fine) and my dashboard says my return rate is 2.22%??? Granted, this is a low-volume (but relatively high item cost) account, but does this mean that one more return and I will be in the  over 4% category? For 2 returns over 5 years????

This account has 0 defect rate, 0 late shipment rate, 0 cases closed without resolution, and is rated above standard. Account has existed for over 20 years, and yet I may get ''fined'' for s second bogus return?

The purpose of every organization, including eBay, is to perpetuate the existence of the organization.  Taking returns with no questions asked is one way to keep buyers, even bad buyers, coming back.  eBay doesn't care if a sale goes wrong for a seller because their are literally millions of sellers and they are constantly recruiting more.  If one person stops selling, there are millions more to take his/her place.  But if a buyer has a bad experience, he/she will post it on social media where tens of thousands of potential customers may see it and possibly decide that eBay is too risky and go elsewhere for their purchases.  eBay isn't developing new buyers at anywhere near the rate as new sellers come in, so those buyers are the key to keeping eBay going. So, in order to perpetuate the existence of eBay, buyers get preferential treatment over sellers.  It's nothing personal, it's business.

''But if a buyer has a bad experience, he/she will post it on social media....''

Newsflash - sellers who have had enough of the only thing still 'binding' about an eBay sale remaining - that would be the binders eBay places on sellers to obfuscate, obstruct and complicate a sale in the first place - are potential buyers too.  Who also have friends, family, and social media presence.

And transactions that used to be personal, instead of anonymous and sterile like everywhere else now, are what made eBay different and attractive and foundational.

Why do sellers (not me anymore) put up with Ebay's crap?  I tried to close my account and the CSR told me I couldn't because I am "below standard" for sales.  WHAT??? I'm taking it to mediation.

I would probably see many returns if anything on Ebay was selling.... Just for fun, I put 20 DVDs and CDs (popular titles) and 5 board games on 1-cent auctions (all items were new). Only half received bids. 13 of them did not sell even though they were listed at 1-cent with free shipping. I was testing my visibility and the strength of Ebay... I will be off of ebay within the next few months, putting all my online efforts into Amazon (where I sell hundreds of items a month) and my own website as well as social media advertising (I started selling on ebay in 1998). Ebay continues to fail sellers on every front.

They really should be letting us make some sales to increase the perception that we'll lose something if we don't go along with Mangled Payments.  As it is now, my response would be "so what?  a single day stocking shelves at Target pays better than an entire month on eBay."

I sell pre-owned clothing, and because I won't take returns, I am buried in search. I am making my move over to Poshmark because there are very few returns, and feedback is not the be all and end all that it is on ebay, and PayPal is not involved at all. They take their fees at the time of sale, no monthly bill, no store, no problems since I started in January.

We have also noticed a significant increase in returns. We have already surpassed our annual average of 20 years. Reasons are all changed my mind or ordered by mistake. We are trying to identify reasons.

"The purpose of every organization, including eBay, is to perpetuate the existence of the organization" - ok - lets suppose this is true - does it condone fraud, theft, piracy, malfeasance and gross negligence by eBay against its sellers?

"Taking returns with no questions asked is one way to keep buyers, even bad buyers, coming back" - ok and if by your logic returns are so GREAT/IMPORTANT - why not let eBay eat them? Its only fair, right? Their idea, their money on the line? Would you accept this behavior from your partner in real life? in business? in marriage? even as a friend? those relationships (in the real world) are considered TOXIC and even abusive.

"eBay doesn't care if a sale goes wrong for a seller because their are literally millions of sellers and they are constantly recruiting more."- %1000 right. If you arent an overseas asian seller OR a major US based player - you are a $2 cockroach in San Jose's playground. But how about just telling sellers they dont count and not lie about it by hiding it in the TOS? Tell sellers that selling on eBay is a %100 risk akin to gambling. You MAY get seen, you MAY get a sale, we MAY get you your money in a reasonable time frame, we MAY let the buyer steal from you, we MAY arbitrarily assess extra fees just cause we can .... you know the truth.

Except all this is hidden from sellers - especially new ones - who THINK that eBay (as they say over and over and over) "we are your selling partners" .... ummmm no you arent.

If all the above is so great then they shouldnt have to hide ANY of it - it should be in big bold letters when you agree to sell on the platform - just like when you invest in stocks. "Capital and items subject to risk and the mood of the CEO at any given time. Sellers items subject to confiscation, destruction, or worse." Then see how many sellers eBay gets!

" If one person stops selling, there are millions more to take his/her place"- and we tell EVERYONE we know - in the "industry", all our friends, all the people we know online, in every possible forum - not to buy or sell on eBay. Just because "you dont see it", doesnt mean we dont spread the word. Every time someone says "WOW you make a living selling on eBay", we reel off a horror story (usually it involves DW and one of his minions) and people recoil in horror ...... so yeh theres THAT.

"eBay isn't developing new buyers at anywhere near the rate as new sellers come in, so those buyers are the key to keeping eBay going"- so yeh - then go spend some time/money developing the platform. Surface advertising etc isnt growing the platform.

" It's nothing personal, it's business. "- LMFAO - try not paying your eBay bill - call them and tell that line - see how far you get. Try calling your CC company or your electric company, and see where it goes. "Look Con Edison, you need me - theres 4 other people who can supply me electricity and you arent getting enough new customers, so this month - I wont pay my bill - cause you know - thats business!" .

LMAO - business 101 advise from people who havent been in business.

arbitration is the single biggest scam on the planet. write congress, get rid of these lame anti rights policies. We have a RIGHT to have our cases heard by peers, not some dolt who may not even know the law or care.

Not sure what is so hard about closing a store. We closed 3 anchor stores last year and greedbay said we couldn't so what we did was.

Deleted as much information as we could including our credit card number

Changed our phone number to a number out of the phone book

Changed our addres to one in a different state.

Also don't forget to delete everything from paypal.

Its been over 8 months and even though the stores still show up with nothing in them you can't find any information about them'

TO US THAT IS AS GOOD AS CLOSED and don't give a damn what ebay says. They get no money from us as we have't paid a dime in eight months. Or and don't forget to cancel the store subscription.

"ebay is the only one below standard for sales , but well above standard for steeling fees."
The word is "stealing" not steeling.

It is not PayPal's fault. eBay spinned it off when they thought it was better business to do so, and is now gearing up to accept it again. PayPal is still the most trusted payment processor around. If you will take the trouble to look at most sites on the internet, they all accept PayPal. Rejecting it is just cutting off your nose to spite your face.
