The Dawn of the New Era of eBay GTC

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
Of note is that today, 4/17, is the dawn of the "new era". The last of the non-GTC listings should have cleared the decks by now. The last opportunity a seller had to post a non-GTC was 3/17, as the new mandate took effect 3/18. So a 30-day listing posted on 3/17 expired yesterday, 4/16. Now we see how things compare in the 2 parallel universes.

As a seller, I am not happy about losing the choices of duration, or ending time, etc. We don't get to be in control of much on eBay, and there goes that little slice of freedom we enjoyed.

I used to like to analyze my expired listings, figure out which ones I had room to discount, or what I could do to update them. Gone now. Might not matter, since we are talking about fictional, invisible listings, mostly. But one always holds out hope.

I buy on eBay roughly the same quantity as I sell. One thing I am looking forward to is waving good-bye to the many repetitive listings that used to parade along when I did a search filtered by Most Recent (new listings). Yup, same listing group I saw 7 days ago. Yup, same prices. Or 30 days ago, and ago, and ago, ad infinitum. I have seen some groups of listings at the same price, same 30-day renewal for over 3 years straight.

It will be interesting to see how much the "new" listing count drops now that recycled listings don't exist. Except those that are manually ended and then restarted. Hopefully that practice will get old quickly, and go away.

I have been tracking the numbers of new listings posted each week in the categories I buy in. I should be able to see how things compare under the new rules. I'll let you know if there is any significant change.

Have to go list some stuff now. eBay has offered me 25% off FVF's on my next 50 NEW invisible listings. Easy for them to make that offer, as they will never have to ante up. People can't see it, I can't sell it, no commission to discount. Looks good on paper, though. Very benevolent.
All the best,
Lightning

My last 30 day listing ends in 13 days. . .

The only items of mine that eBay has hidden have been gun parts they think are for so called "assault" weapons.

And it's hard to convince them otherwise once they flag a listing. . . .

OP says "One thing I am looking forward to is waving good-bye to the many repetitive listings that used to parade along when I did a search filtered by Most Recent (new listings)."

And a big reason why OP saw so many repetitive listings is due to the fact that listings are mostly invisible.  If they weren't, they'd sell.

Check completed listings of most any item. The sell-thru is abysmal.   It's a rigged card came folks.

OK, I found something not kosher in search

202649326363

Shows up with the search colt handle but not with colt carry handle

The 1st 3 words of the title are "colt carry handle"

It's not hidden but if you don't search the right way it won't be found!

@Toolguy
One last time (please), let's get the "hidden listing" topic straight in your mind.  You are looking at it from your very myopic view.  Since you can see your listings at any time, you think none ever get hidden.  That is a poor test of the supposition.

You have no idea if your items are being hidden or not.  None of us do, but we suspect.  Sales swings and odd long-duration famines of sales indicate that the listings aren't being displayed in Search, specifically in Best Match, which is the default format that results are displayed in.  Maybe removed from Mobil, who knows for sure?

Just because YOU can see all your items, doesn't mean others can see them when searching.  I can see all of mine at any time, and you can see all of yours.  If I told you I have 543 listings up for sale, if you checked my store, you would likely see all 543 items.  Ebay really can't hide that without being too obvious.  You are looking at a specific page on eBay.  But in search by Best Match, they can do whatever they like.  THAT is where they decide to show your listings or not, bury them or not.

A short while back, according to your post, you searched for a Hot Wheels Boss Hog Mustang and got 167 results.  How do you know there weren't really 203 for sale??  You don't.  Unless you do a search and KNOW that someone else's item should be there, you have no idea if you are being shown all the possible choices.  Ebay even has a new move where they TELL you at the top of your results page that they have removed some results due to relevance.  So THEY decide what's relevant.  People report that when they go to another state on vacation, since the IP address may be different, suddenly their listings diminish or disappear.  Ebay even has it in their TOS that your listings may not be visible at all times.

The theory (not MY theory, someone else's), is that sellers are throttled according to sales activities.  If you get a sudden rush of sales, your listings might be "shut off" in Search for a period of time to let other sellers get a taste.  I have no idea if this is true, and at first I thought like you, that it must be paranoia on the part of the sellers.  But then I started noticing some of the same activity, or actually LACK of activity.  I think it affects others selling mass market products the most, and I am not in that area.  Neither are you, so you are immune to it, for the most part.  But again, you don't really know for sure, because you can't see how your items are displayed from a different computer, phone, area of the country, etc.

You certainly have the right to not believe that listings are hidden, but using yourself incorrectly as an example of disproving it, just aggravates those who are feeling it the most.  You are rubbing salt in the wound.  I recommend you stop using salt.

I forgot to mention those who feel their listings are hidden due to a performance problem, like a return or an eBay case gone sour.  After these events, they notice sales falling off the table.  Directly related? No one can say for sure.  Just another possibility, another thing to make note of to see if it forms a pattern.  Not everything is black and white.

I have friends and relatives all over the US

Whenever I talk to any of them I ask them if they can see my listings, the answer is always YES

Wanna try for yourself?

Dynaswivel air fitting

How many do you see?

My guess is the 3 on the top of search are mine. . . .

You're still not getting it, and I doubt you will ever figure it out.

You gave me an example of a search where EIGHT listings appear on ALL of eBay.  Of course they will be visible, with only 8 to choose from.  You may recall me mentioning that YOU are not going to see the effect, as you have goods that are not mass market items.  Yet still you persist in your examples as to how it is not happening to you, so it must be false.  I don't think you read with comprehension.

If you have one of 5000 iPhones for sale, even if yours is the ''best match'' in every way - price, condition, features - eBay might decide to bury yours because you had a rash of sales lately.  Some other guy paying for a store needs to sell something, or he might not keep his store.  So he gets a turn on the eBay Wheel of Fortune.  His is pushed to the top.  It's likely the buyer is not being shown all the possibilities, but they are not cognizant of that fact.  How would they know?  They can't see behind the curtain.

Here is an example of what you are doing with your posts that challenge the prevailing conversations:

A bunch of people are in a room, commiserating about how bad the economy is, that jobs are scarce, they're living from day to day, barely getting by.  A millionaire walks in and picks up on the conversation, and declares, ''I don't know what you people are griping about.  I'm having no problem paying MY bills.''

That's you, not understanding the problem because it is not YOUR problem.  And it can't even exist because it's not affecting you.  You should just be happy it is NOT your problem, and leave it alone.  Instead, you jump in and declare how all these ''presumed problems'' are balderdash.  If you don't have something to contribute, what is the point of posting?

@Lightning

My question is why would you sell something that 10,000 other sellers are selling?

Items aren't hidden, they're BURIED.

If you try to sell anything common or made in china you'll have a hard time making a living on eBay.

I'm not stupid, I know what's going on.

I've been on this forum no less then 10 years!

Yes, items can be hidden, but if they are most of the time there's a reason.

Have a few bad returns, you might be throttled, eBay see's you as a risk, you might be throttled, selling questionable items, you might be throttled. . .

But like I said, my items are there, they always are unless it's a firearm item that eBay doesn't like.

The only other item eBay has ever hidden of mine was mercury filled thermometers. They pulled them down and I relisted them and instead of taking them down again they just hid them. . .That was 15 years ago

I've mastered GTC - ended 400+ items never to reappear on ebay because I was already at 1,000 items  - started in listing new items never seen before - will run them for 60 days then shift them to my website. I got more stuff - I'll just keep working. Today I had more sales on my website than ebay.  Yuppie - I'll keep plugging away. With sales as dismal on ebay as they are I can't really afford to upgrade my subscription to anchor. It is what it is - pretty sure I'm not the only seller in this jam.

Just one more thing - some of my friends have closed their stores entirely - some down graded and went to eTsy - others deleted like I did.  So how does that help Wenig's google problem?  I see many many dead links in their future.

My last store subscription day is May 28.  Can hardly wait that long to close the store.  Fired off letters to EB & its board of directors about the threatening email I received about my below standard level.

How's GTC working out?  Well, they ran another free listing promotion last week and I didn't bother to list anything because I wasn't sure if I'd remember to cancel everything before the relist fees were charged.  Heckuva job Norsey!

It's not always easy to see why listings don't show, but in this case I can tell you why.
The first search, ''Colt Handle'' is defaulting to ''All Categories.'' The second search, ''Colt Carry Handle'' is defaulting to the category ''Scope Mounts and Accessories''. The listing in question is in the category ''Other range and shooting accessories'' so it is in the wrong category and therefore not showing for that search result.
Our company helps eBay sellers make sense of the platform, and we have seen the importance of using the correct category become much higher in recent years.

I am closing shop on one of my shops. I too got Free listings and did not use them as there is no way  with GTC to grow any business on Ebay. And there is no money to be made if you have to pay listing fees. Catch 22 as it were.

I was offered 100 more 'free' listings since GTC went into effect. I switched 100 of my expired 30-day listings that had free shipping over to 10-day auctions with BIN, lowered the starting price a little, but eliminated free shipping. By doing that, I wasn't losing any money if bought at starting auction price and actually made a little more if buyer used BIN. I did this just as a test with no real expectations. I was surprised that I have already sold more than I thought I would. Sales on eBay might not come close to sales on other sites, but this is my eBay strategy for now.

@Inspiration, that's a good move changing to auction.  I may try that.  Anywho, I tried to relist some items starting May 1 and was blocked because I cannot list any additional items because I am below standard.  Is this anti-business? yes.  Is this anti-consumer (I'm a buyer too); yes!  Will this create ill will; yes. This is dumb dumb, a good way to turn off seller & buyer.  I have one more month on my subscription; why would you stop me from listing?

"My question is why would you sell something that 10,000 other sellers are selling?"

Because there are no bones in ice cream - thats why.

1) most people dont have consistant access to either rare or hard to get/find items. Thats exactly WHY most people sell more common items

2) if 1000000 people all buy underwear and only 100 buy gun parts - and you had to start a business selling something - would you want to get into the BIG market and have lots of customers, or get into the small market and have only a few?

3) alot of sellers (like myself - cant speak for others) have long tail careers in the areas we sell in. I dont sell womens undergarments because besides my wife - I have no experience in that area. BUT, I have 35 yrs experience in electronics - hence that is what I sell.

Id take serious heed to Lightning's words - his explanation of whats "happening" with listings - is detailed and correct.
