Consequences of Using eBay GTC Out of Stock Feature

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
Please remind your readers who are eBay Sellers to check their PREFERENCES on the "Out Of Stock Option" (OOS).

IF that box is CHECKED, then ALL their Fixed Price / Guaranteed To Close listings - even those that are for a single item, for which you have NO Quantity: All your GTC listings will automatically be O.O.S. / GTC.

That means; if you have ONE item, and it sells, then the listing will RENEW for 3 months, even though you had one, now have none. That listing stays open w/ a '0' quantity.

Prior to this Update, a single item GTC ended once item sold.

You cannot CHOSE which items, at listing, are GTC or GTC / O.O.S. It is 'all or nothing'.
Sign me,
Epuise

Note from the editor: Longtime developer Shipscript explains this in great detail in this March 5th article. It is vitally important that sellers understand when and how to use the Out of Stock feature for GTC listings.

Even when the OOP "feature" was only applied to MULTIPLE quantity listings it was still a $-Pricey-$ disaster just waiting in the shadows to catch the Unwary seller.  I saw the BEAR TRAP quickly once my very first "next month's invoice" showed that I was being billed for over a dozen OOS recurring listing fees on items where I DID have multiple quantities BUT had no reasonable expectation to EVER EVER have even ONE  more... let alone multiples.
One of those NICE SOUNDING eBay Features that LAUNCHED without any Adult Supervision.  Clearly, nobody at eBay even knows how to SPELL Chess.... let alone have any experience with trying to Look, Plan, and ACT two or three steps ahead.

Yeah, I saw it too.   I repeatedly typed OOP when I meant OOS.

As long as the "edit" button works I'm in complete control. . .

A widget today might be a bowling ball tomorrow ~ LOL

You have to watch your EB account & listings like a hawk.  It's an never ending cycle and process.  Not like other sites....but then again EB is an entity onto itself.

Watch out folks they also relist items you have only one of after it sells hoping sellers will forget while it keeps getting relisted with a zero inventory and buried in the search results. The best thing sellers can do right now is take down all slow selling items keeping it that way so e-bay sees a crash in inventory and cancels GTC!!! Denny

GTC does NOT mean guaranteed to close.  GTC = Good Till Cancelled.

The OOS function has remained the same since it started.  it the seller chooses to use this function, it will apply to ALL GTC listings.  Even single quantity listings that sell out.

Sellers can end these listings anytime they want and they won't be lying in wait for a quantity update.  But unless they are ended by the seller, they remain a hidden active listing.  Buyers can't purchase off them, but they remain active on the Seller's account and therefore the seller will pay renewal fees when it is time for the GTC to renew.

@denny
A listing that has zero quantity available should not be returning in any search by a potential buyer.
