Reader Says Etsy Locks Sellers Out of Teams

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
You should look at Etsy right now. They are intentionally blocking forum users from being on teams.

If we were muted, we are now locked out of teams as well. But we can't stop getting alerts. We can't even reassign captains.

We are completely being locked out, but still pay full fees.
T.

This is true and not only that, the mods on the Etsy pitical forums are biased against conservatives that have positive messages about what the President is doing and tend to ban them or give them time outs while really vile comments against conservatives, who many Etsy sellers are, are left up for the whole community to see. It is even rumored that they have paid trolls there. Not a very good business practice and it could result in discrimination claims.

I can't even begin to understand why anyone would think Etsy forums is a good place to discuss politics. Politics and religion ... not good topics for public forums.

Even the team captains are locked out of their teams. Something Etsy said they were not going to do.

Bobsy, the Etsy forums are no place to spread political propaganda.  They are for Etsy sellers and customers to create and benefit from the Etsy community.  If you want to discuss politics, I suggest thehill.com, foxnews, com or any of the hundreds of other sites, including Twitter, FB, Pinterest and so on.  There you will find thousands, if not millions, of people to commune with in harmony and the opportunity to be affirmed in your beliefs.

Funny, because when Obama was in office, the forums weren’t absent of his obedient worshippers’ praise.

I am a team leader that is blocked from posting to my own teams.  Its outrageous.

Why on earth would anyone think that the Etsy forums are for political debate in the first place?  IF they have a problem with anything politically related then they should just remove the post and let the person know its against its rules etc. but to block them from the forums for which they pay is beyond reprehensible.

The teams are not ours anymore and we will be penalized when commenting or dissenting against Etsy from here on in.

There is no privacy anymore, and we will be policed and  blocked from forums on (even more so than before) and that should concern everyone.  AT least before, we were still team members that could participate and engage with our team mates. Not any more it seems.

Have to agree. Unless it is policy that directly or sometimes indirectly effects online selling or shipping, the forums and specific topic teams aren’t the place for politics. If you have a chatty team with like minded folks who are friendly to political debate, that’s one thing. However no matter whate side you are cheering for, a selling sites public forum isn’t the place for political slant. Your sort of “asking for it” if your posting blatant political content not related to policy affecting online retail.

There is more to be concerned about with this new forum than a few silly people that people seem to be focused on here.

I am a leader of a team and cannot get to it or post at all on forums. As a not Good Citizen I have been punished.
Not using the forums was a disadvantage with the old forums due to not being able to use the promos. Part of reason of me trying to build a team to take up the slack.
With the new forums that is cutting off this ability to do my business.
Yes, politics should have never been mixed with selling online. Hindsight is always 20/20.
That stated I feel like Conservatives were greatly at a disadvantage.
A nobrainer considering the stances of this particular venue publicly. It is public domain and not like a secret.
My huge mistake. Repeatedly the Political forums were called by many to shut them down.
IMHO the saddest tale though is I know a dealer who actually had a heart attack and died from being banned and not able to do their business.
That should never of been to that extent.
Some depend on these venues and social places for income and to live. Truly. That is a true and honest fact. The damage is done forever.
I have sold online since 2002 on many, many venues that deal with Vintage.
Major lessons learned on and about the internet and social media the last few years for sure. I would of never dreamed TBH. Ignorance truly was bliss in this instance.
I have no idea how it will all go forward. To favor certain localities and persons on political persuasion is just never a good thing IMHO.
Time will tell. I do not understand why they did not just leave the old forums and remove the political threads TBH.

It’s the paradox of Etsy. They say promote and drive traffic to your shop, strength in Etsy community. Yet take away and change the tools  that let us do that. Looking at the forums and teams today, it’s a train wreck. They’ve either gone live too soon or just have crappy developers working on it. What I saw was a lot of code with errors, functions that don’t work and layout that was overlapping itself. It’s almost unusable. They’d done better to eat crow and tell us they weren’t done yet or a better thought, not fix what wasn’t broken. The money they paid the developers could have gone to advertising to , I dunno, bring in traffic to increase sales.

To all you virtue signalers who are nothing but close minded prigs that want to ban free speech- why not just be honest about your bias.

Like someone else said- when it was Hussein Obama or one of your liberal heroes, you didn't care if they had a 1000 pages of leftist propaganda.

But a let a patriotic American conservative dare to say anything that goes against their politically correct narrative, and watch the jackboots come out.

Perhaps the greatest freedom we have in the USA is freedom of speech and assembly.  As long as the forums are out there, they should be just that- forums for people to express their ideas, regardless of how unpleasant they may be to some people.  Free speech is an absolute.  You don't get to censor someone because you don't agree with them.

Many good people have been perma muted not because they did anything wrong- just that they had the misfortune to write something that was politically incorrect in the eyes of the snowflake moderator.

Etsy's liberal bias is well known.  Just read the crap that they spout in their propaganda.  I wouldn't mind what they did if they were just honest.

Stop telling everyone all of their machinations and manipulations of the site are for the greater good.

They deliberately pick winners and losers and if they can do so to someone whose politics they don't like, so much the better as far as they're concerned.

The truth is that the new forums are a total mess anyway.   Unusable.

I know several people who have been permanently muted on Etsy and it wasn't for anything to do with politics or religion. It was for comments regarding the ridiculous and unnecessary changes Etsy often makes to the website. Also for comments regarding several occasions when Etsy released personal information about it's sellers. Even for a bit of general silliness that Etsy admin just can't take. NONE of these muted people used obscene language or attacked an Etsy employee personally. Some forum admins are very thin-skinned. Some of them have swollen heads, thinking they're above sellers just because of their admin positions - these are the heavy handed ones who shut down threads for the tiniest perceived infraction.

The new forums are a huge mess and many private teams are moving to off-Etsy discussion platforms where they don't have to worry about private posts becoming public at the whim of Etsy or Lithium. Right now anyone can click on a seller's profile and see all of the comments they've ever posted in an Etsy forum, including teams. Yet another instance of Etsy not taking privacy concerns seriously.

Hello, to all those saying politics has no place on the fora. You sidestepped the point!  People being locked out, people being banned, and the bias of Etsy mods, not to mention the lack of privacy and the little care they take to protect privacy. Whatever your opinion is of politics in public debate, tell it to Etsy because they allow it in chit chat, it gets lots of clicks from lots of lurkers.

SellerGirl, the forums include Chit Chat and has done so for a lot of years and politics has always been a part of it, like it or not.
If you disagree then tell it to Etsy. Don't hold your breath for an answer t

- people being blocked and banned which impedes the ability of paying customers to promote their business and discuss pertinent information with team mates
- silencing people who dare criticize Etsy
- total lack of privacy, which should concern everyone - big brother watching and waiting to pounce and all
- citing research relating to such decisions that we never get to see

Politics aside, those are the real issues facing everyone who doesn't tow the line

With all due respect to the comments re. political chit chat and muting - I am the person who wrote the letter to Ina about Etsy locking out muted members from the forums AND their teams. THAT is the point. Not whether political views are allowed to be aired.

I am a team captain and cannot post to my team.
There are things only a team captain can do.
I cannot get into the team to resign and let someone else take over.
I cannot log in to lithium to stop getting constant emails every time people post in any thread I was able to post in on the first day.
If I have a service issue - I have no way to access any help.

THOSE ARE THE ISSUES. It is not about if you were muted for saying something that supported Trump or didn't support Trump in a political thread. Everything else is just noise.

What Etsy has said is they are 'reviewing the issue.' Not that they are trying to fix it. Further - this was a deliberate decision to prevent access. If anyone who is muted wants access, they have to write and appeal their case. If you've already done that before and were reinstated, you will likely not be granted access.

And for what it is worth - those 'liberal snowflake moderators' muted me for posting in that political thread and I am not a conservative.

I was perma muted in 2013.  Many banned users joined the Etsy community before 2010, had been selling online for about 20 years now, and are 50+ years old.  IMO, it's not political viewpoint that gets people banned.  I hold pretty much opposite views (I am way to the Left of Obama) from GracefulAntiques (I know who you are -- waves), but we are close in age and online selling experience.  And both of us are muted.  I don't think Etsy corporate wants public input from sellers who have been around for decades and seen the mistakes that other venues have made -- mistakes that should have taught Etsy's management something.

When I saw the announcement on Etsy about the Forums migration I wondered if they would do the right thing and unban all their registered community members.  But then I realized that what they would likely do is impose a total ban on muted members, blocking them from Teams as well as Forums.  As always, Etsy lived down to my expectations.

Seriously, who is surprised that Etsy would block muted members from Teams when they got the chance?  The presence of muted sellers in Teams, acting friendly and professional there, could make users question why Etsy needed to ban these people.  And that can't be allowed.

Just the facts ma'am in response.

1. I as a seller selling online since 2002 have never ever discriminated against anyone.

2. You have the privilege of knowing me but I do not know who you are.

3. Seems a bit plausible they would not want seasoned sellers.

4. I would like to think all political spectrum would love and collect Vintage. As long as anyone treasures the treasures I have gathered it is all good with me.

5. 2013 and 2019 are years apart. I do not know why anyone is permanently banned back then but do know why I was and many others as well. The political climate has gone off the rails everywhere.

6. I was banned the first time for saying something was "Silly." This is after trying to play nice and starting a thread on Daily Prayer and one on the Fashion of First Lady Melania Trump. Both got derailed fast.

7. My perma mute was because I had the audacity to innocently suggest to the infamous Rosie O that with children seeing the forum boards she may want to tone it down is how I remember it TBH.

8. IMHO I find it beyond the pale that anyone can ever know the full political spectrum of anyone. We are not clones and we all do not fit into little boxes. That is what Free Speech is for. Many, many family members of mine fought for this great privilege and Honor and it should NOT be hindered in any way, shape or form.
At the end of the day God and God alone is my provider. Sandy
