eBay Reduces Value of Shipping Supply Perk for Stores

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
When eBay last raised the prices for owning a store, they threw in a quarterly coupon for eBay branded shipping supplies. I bought a wide variety of boxes and some envelopes, and was pretty happy with this perk.

They now no longer offer any of the smaller sized boxes, and the number of items carried seems to be less than half of what they had before.

When I raised this issue with the supplier, they said they were only carrying the best selling items, but I have to wonder if the 18 inch boxes they now have sell that much better than 12 x 12 x 12 boxes they used to carry.

This is disappointing and creates the impression that eBay is an unreliable partner. The coupon is not worth much if the selection of supplies is a poor fit for your business.

I really miss the smaller boxes.

Don't overlook the plastic bags. With enough bubble wrap, there's a lot you ship...excluding light bulbs.
You get 100 for your $25 coupon.

They probably discontinued the size boxes that the post office gives away for priority mail. 12 x 12 x 12 is one of them. 6 x 6 x 6 is another size.

They are full of it. I got the 'best seller' line as well. They got rid of  10 and 12  inch cubed boxes. Those are HUGE sellers.  It's a joke now and almost worthless if you wanted to use the coupon for boxes.  Their tape sucks so there is no point in buying that.

bigger boxes = increased postage = more money for eBay

I dont understand why people just dont understand that this company is THE MAFIA.

EVERY part of it is crooked, every part of it is designed to separate you and your wallet, every part is designed to make you fail.

You cant just "List, get paid, and ship" ... thats "so 2007" - right when the current idiots came to power (yeh Devin the Devil, Bumbling Burke, The Sleeping Grifter, and Cut you to pieces Cutler - you morons).

This seems like another act of desperation by eBay. They look at what people are choosing the most, and then dump that product. That causes their sellers to not use the coupon, thus saving them money.

A lot of people, including me, just buy whatever Ebay Branded Supplies they can resell for the most money.  You take that money and buy what you need at a fraction of the price of Bascom, who is the official Ebay Shipping supplier.  That way you get the supplies you need AND put some money back in your pocket.  It's a bit of a hassle, but makes the best of a bad situation.

NOT EVERYTHING EBAY DOES IS VENAL. Seriously. Honest businesses make Business Decisions Every Day. Poor(er) selling products just do not make the cut. Personally, I RACED to get the 18 x 12 x 12 box on my second round of using the Premium Store coupon. NO REGRETS. The Air Jacket PADDED mailers are WONDERFUL with NO drawbacks at all. I PASSED 3rd grade and RETAINED the sense and method of recognizing that Micro-Selecting SMALL quantities of boxes, tape, Mailers, TISSUE PAPER? ! so as to Just Barely cover the Coupon Credit is Short-Sighted.  NO WAY!
The proper approach is to recognize and USE the fact that the VOLUME PURCHASE discount by the Seller, Bascom, SWAMPS the coupon value.  Hence buying 400 (rather than 100) of the size Zero Air-Jacketed, DELIVERED to my own front porch held the NET price per mailer to a DIME each. Literally a DIME per mailer.  I have been shipping since 1972 and every time one of these "huge" 8 cubic foot bundles of light-weight items pops up on my porch I get a HUGE case of SMH (Shaking My Head) as were I to  have been shipping that EXACT same bundle of items 1,000 miles from Houston BACK to the shipper's warehouse would have been rated as 56 POUNDS dimensional weight (UPS).  Zone 6 @ the 56 pound rate would have cost well over $50.  DIME a mailer and FREE (to me) shipping is a win Win.  100 mailers free vs. 400 mailers with the NET price each dropped to a DIME is a decision SOOOOOO Easy that it defines the MEANING of a "No Brainer".

Agreed. But what does that have to do with ebay?

Has anyone used or receive the Ebay tape recently.  The ones that come in a roll of blue, purple or yellow tape?  Is is any good?

Back in the very beginning of these supplies being offered I got some of the white tape with the multi colored Ebay logo on it.  It was horrible tape.  So I was just wondering, with the change of design, did they upgrade the tape at all?

@angryllama
Good thing you got your 18x12x12 boxes, not offered anymore.  Largest is 16x12x8.
Check your math on your size #0 envelopes.  Yes, ''free'' 100 for your $25 coupon (which is still YOUR money), so that's 25 cents each.  Going to 400 is $89, so $64 out of pocket divided by 400 envelopes is 16 cents each PLUS surrendering your coupon.  If you have a $50 coupon you can get 200 ''free'' (still a quarter each), or now the 400 is $39 out of pocket, about a dime each AND surrendering a $50 coupon.  No matter how you slice it, for the 400 envelopes, Bascom is charging you 22.2 cents each, cash plus coupon.  They are not competitively priced.  You can buy the same thing from other ebay vendors, and better yet, they are blank.  Below is a link to a seller asking $63 for 500 envelopes with free shipping, so 12.6 cents each.  Of course, you can't use your coupon.  But if another seller can charge 12.6 cents, why can't Bascom?  Because they don't have to!  You're forced to buy from them to use up your coupon.  Reminds you of the ''I owe my soul to the Company Store'' song lyric.  And unlike free market sellers, Bascom has guaranteed sales from all the store owners, and STILL can't offer competitive prices? They should be WOOPING the other sellers.  Ridiculous, and a definite monopoly.

Did anyone actually see value in purchasing the eBay shipping supplies??

I remember when they first rolled these out years ago, and although I thought it was kind of "trendy" or "cool" to use them, all their supplies were way overpriced for me to justify paying eBay so I could advertise for them.

I used to buy from Uline when I lived in Chicago because I was able to pickup from them in the northern Chicago burbs, but then they started to charge somewhere around $25 for a so-called "pickup" charge.  it basically equaled the shipping cost.

Now, I periodically search Craigslist local ads and our local flea markets for new, bulk shipping supplies.  You'd be surprised at what you can find.

Over 95% of what I sell is First Class bubble mailer type items, with the rest being anything I can fit in a Priority Mail Flat Rate Box, since boxes are free.  I was fortunate I found someone on CL selling 100 count cases of #1 bubble mailers for $12 each, so I bought 5 of them to stock up on.  That's 12 cents a mailer.

I found rolls of packaging tape at a flea market for $1 a 100ft. roll and 12" wide Duck brand bubble wrap is only $17.00 a 150 foot roll at Walmart.

Another thought on the eBay shipping supplies coupons reminds me of a grocery store in Florida called Publix.

It's a nice, clean, friendly store, but I believe their daily prices are way overpriced.

They are well known for their weekly Buy 1 Get 1 Free sales.  It reminds me of these eBay supply coupons, because since Publix prices are already overpriced, when they do their BOGO sale, they're basically putting them to a normal, competitive price.

The coupon for supplies isn't the only thing that the charge for the store covers.  So while yes your math is correct if you don't consider any of the other benefits that a store offers you for the money you pay.

@lighting @Marie

Ummmm.  Even though lighting MENTIONED it more or less in passing, yes, the Premium store VOUCHER is $50 4x a Year.   POINTLESS to compare Bascom product to Brand X as I've now purchased TWO sizes of their Poly Bubble Bags and THREE sizes of their Cardboard Boxes. ALL have been flawless.  I would be PAYING Attention to their products if for NO OTHER REASON than their PROVEN quality.  That being said you essentially Glossed Over the way that of the items AVAILABLE thru this Designated eBay products seller they are the ONLY GAME IN TOWN to use that for all intents and purposes FREE MONEY via the $50 per quarter VOUCHER.  Yes, VOUCHER, as that word better describes the $50 FREE MONEY vs. mealy-mouthed "coupon".  One way or another I'm offered $1000s a month in COUPONS, but they are for things and stores here in Houston that don't interest me AT ALL.  To the contrary, a VOUCHER good only for a designated period of time and ONLY from one source (a source that has already PROVEN its quality and reliability to me) makes "shopping" from Bascom EASY AS FALLING OFF A LOG.  My point was always that using the $50 VOUCHER to pick and choose among OTHER Bascome items that are of NO INTEREST TO ME just to be sure that the ENTIRE order FIT within that $50 VOUCHER is Nutzy.  Yes, NUTZY, as getting as many of something as I am likely to NEED in the forthcoming 6 months or so (in this case 400 size 0 poly air-jacket mailers) not only gets me that 6 month or so supply AND leaves me free to go BACK to ordering up their significantly more flexible Size 4 Poly Air-Jacket mailers NEXT QUARTER.  In truth that NEXT Quarter's $50 VOUCHER is just around the corner and JUST IN TIME as the 400 I used my Spring VOUCHER for are just about exhausted.  OK, second truth is that the size Zero just might be a FULL YEAR's Supply as they are too SHORT for DVDs, too THIN for more than TWO Blu-Rays.  I have a 12-inch IMPULSE HEAT SEALER and always use THAT to TRAP AIR inside and SEAL all of my Poly mailers so that RAIN just cannot get in.

I also use it to ELIMINATE that CUTESY-POO idea of TWO sealing strips with tear-tabs is yet another one of eBay's DAMMFOOL steps to encourage RETURNS.  No Sealing Strips means MY WAY is not encouraging buyers to morph into troublesome RETURN MAVENS.
To Marie, no, I have never used even a penny of my VOUCHERS for sealing tape.  That particular product has SO MANY BAD MANUFACTURERS that once I do find ones that I can tolerate..... I don't experiment any further.  In my mind it is like going to SuperMarket and seeing NEW brand of Catsup for $0.90 less than Heinz.  Do I CARE?  Nope.  Getting awful catsup at multiple different fast food operations keeps me well aware that catsup isn't always catsup.

I have no issue with the charge for a store in general.  I have a HUGE issue with the crazy price increase a while back.  Ebay yanked up the price, not a little bit, but like 50% and then gave SOME of it back in the form or a coupon (or voucher, if one prefers) for overpriced shipping supplies.  Just a bold money grab, and again we have no defense to it except to endure it or get out.  And yet it seems to have worked for them, as some people actually think it's ''nice'' to get the voucher/coupon.  It was all contrived to be a way for the store owners to fund ebay's desire to have branded packaging out in the marketplace (like Amazon).  A genius move for them, which usually means a bad move for us.  People don't even know when they're getting it tucked to them.

The latest batch of plastic bags I got for my voucher has printed on it,

"Shop like nobody else. Because you aren't like anyone else."

Really? I wonder what slogan came in second place when they decided to drop the eBay logo from the mailer?

I have not received a coupon in close to a year.  2 friends who also sell here have not received them either.  What would the reason for that be?  We just supposed they stopped issuing them.  Last 2 times I ordered, I was only shown 4 or 6 sizes, all being lots smaller than I need.

I use 8'' x 8'' x 8'' boxes more than any other size.  When they dropped that size, I complained to the vendor and they said it was an unpopular size.
The sizes that are left are either too small or way too large.  Go figure.
