Seller Extends Invitation to New eBay Executive

Dear eBay Management,
It's been just under a month since my last letter that Ina was so kind as to share on EcommerceBytes, and sadly, not much has changed. While I realize I missed the mark in that you squeaked out earnings of 2 cents beyond projected, I hope that didn't give you a false sense of relevance. For, you see, your small sellers are dying out here, and you've not so much as offered a bandage.

We are now at the end of Cyber Monday. Many of your mom-and-pop operations counted on this weekend for survival. We had hoped you would prove we mattered to you by offering coupons or benefits to ACTUAL small sellers with your grandiose #MakingItHappen campaign.

Instead we sat and watched as massive corporations, mostly overseas, got EVERY bit of public relations and press with the exception of some token videos on a few hand-picked sellers.

Those same mom-and-pop operations only generated, in many cases, mediocre sales, and mostly because THEY chose to put discounts on their inventory. Rather than helping the little guys, you left us bleeding in the aisles and wondering why we still bother. We are getting it, you don't want small sellers. And you certainly don't want those who sell used items.

How do we know this? Your CSR's have made it pretty clear in what they say between the lines. That you don't care that it is impossible for sellers of used items to be profitable when they are held to the same standards as those who sell new in the box items.

It was alluded to your TIGHTENING these requirements in the future, which can only mean even more forced returns, longer return windows, and reduced placements for those who won't comply. It is obvious in the responses "Lori" gives to sellers with problems on the "eBay for Business" page in which mom-and-pop sellers report the frauds perpetrated against them and are dismissed or outright ignored. It is VERY obvious in that you hung us all completely out to dry on the biggest selling weekend of the year. eBay doesn't want small sellers. Change my mind.

Absolutely nothing has improved since my last open letter, and, in fact, the situation is looking more bleak for those who built eBay. Those of us who have bought and sold since the first days of eBay. Those who have worked through every "next great new thing" as eBay has developed itself away from being eBay and into, as one poster called it "eBazon." I guess we can hope that the hiring of Harry Temkin might help us, but it is unlikely. Small sellers no longer trust eBay.

I will close with this, and it is directed straight to Harry Temkin.

Harry, you have thousands of small sellers out here who are one fraudulent return from closing shop, or bankruptcy. Your sellers are losing the entrepreneurial drive that made eBay so great. We love eBay. Or at least, we love the classic eBay, where we mattered.

If you want to get down in the trenches and find out how to help small sellers survive, if you're really serious, let's sit down and talk. Ina has my permission to connect you to me, directly.

You could learn a lot spending a day reading the comments on this site, or spending an afternoon talking to me, or any of 100 other sellers. So how about it? Let's do lunch. You'll have to fly AND buy, unfortunately, as I just had to put groceries on a credit card, again.

Kudos to you my dear friend for your truly beautiful and heartfelt post.  My husband and I have been on eBay for 15 years and are experiencing the exact same situation that you have expressed.  Our sentiment is that Harry Temkin will talk the talk, but never walk the walk.....Success comes from the top....it rises and falls on leadership....To Devin Wenig; A true leader doesn't make excuses.  A true leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way....

ebay should be like a horse race. You put down your $2 (25 cents) and hope.
It's not. It's a rigged race.
Nothing short of a $20 stock price will change that.
Accept that and move on. Wailing is a waste of time.

Your eBay seller experience will be directly related to what kind of merchandise you sell.

I know sellers of clothes and collectibles that hate eBay!

I know sellers of gun parts and Industrial surplus that love eBay!

If you sell new chinese made products you have no chance unless you're buying at liquidation bulk auction prices!

And let's not even talk about drop shipping, it's a nowhere business model. . .

OP, my sales are great----off eBay.   Build elsewhere.  My eBay sales are pitiful. I feel pretty sure they have throttled me even more during the holidays as not selling more during this time of year makes no sense.

The good news? I don't depend on them anymore.  No one should.

I sell used items on ebay. My policy is you can return anything you want for any or no reason what so ever and I will pay return shipping (within USA).

I almost never get a return.

Instead of worrying about the negative, embrace the positive and you might do better. In other words, bend with the wind. Oak trees tend to break.

That is my 2 bits and I shipped 985 items on ebay this year.

Do you mind me asking what your eBay ID is?

I like used stuff, especially if it's gun related. . .

If they didn't fly over to China and party with you and make "a deal", you are not part of Fee Bay's future.

You can keep on paying your fees though. They like money coming in.

"I know sellers of clothes and collectibles that hate eBay!"

thats because eBay isnt honest about returns. If it says SIZE 10 on the tag then its a size 10. How many White Castles the buyer ate isnt germane to the point. These issues dont happen on Poshmark.

"vIf you sell new chinese made products you have no chance unless you're buying at liquidation bulk auction prices!" MOST things to day are made in China - even higher end electronics (aka Apple) so this statement holds no water.

"And let's not even talk about drop shipping, it's a nowhere business model. . " Except that 1000's of dealers and distributors to it each and every day. No experience in these matters show when people speak without understanding things. If the few 100+ million dollar sellers on eBay who do it cant sway your mind, then you can ask D&H, Ingram or Navarre.

"If they didn't fly over to China and party with you and make "a deal", you are not part of Fee Bay's future. "

%10000 TRUE.

"If it says SIZE 10 on the tag then its a size 10"

A size 10 changes from brand to brand!

Just like Men's clothes a large isn't always a large!

If you don't try it on you have NO idea if it fits!

You can't compete with a chinese seller on any product made in china!

Even if you bought it at the same price they can ship it cheaper and they don't need to make as much profit because the cost of living is cheaper!

Drop shipping is a tough way to sell things, I've never tried it but a tool selling friend of mine did. He sold (20) tools in 5 years!

PS: To my knowledge I have never received a drop shipped item from any eBay seller. I can say that because I buy very few new chinese things on eBay!

If I want something made in china I buy it at Walmart. . .

This is very true. If the seller lists the length, width, etc., then there shouldn't be a problem. Except that a plethora of people never bother to read any portion of a listing, don't bother to take the measurements stated and see if the item will fit on their own body, and just assume that "I bought a Size 10 from Brand X on Monday and it fit fine, so buying a Size 10 from Brand Y today should also fit fine."

That may be %100 true - except that its not the fault of the seller. Abit of due diligence (the internet is your friend)(Google may be evil but you can get info on almost anything using it)) on the buyers part solves that issue. "runs small", "runs big" etc - those comments are on Amazon in every listing plus in other places.

Yes but almost everything is made in China - so Im not sure where you are going with that. We arent talking about "tupperware" (at least in my case).

"Drop shipping is a tough way to sell things, I've never tried it but a tool selling friend of mine did. He sold (20) tools in 5 years!"

Cant tell you about the tool market - Im not in it. There are a few distributors that I know that DS consumer tool products (ie Dewalt & Milwaukee)(I know - not stuff you do) ... so it IS possible to do. These people (distributors) dont know/care what goes into the box - its just another product they sell. Whether its a jig saw or a headphone - to them it makes NO difference.

@toolguy
Just wanted to know I appreciate your change in tone.  Your last post did a good job explaining why it's hard to compete on Chinese products.  Before it came off just a little insulting, like it was our fault for purposely selling junk instead of just a bad set of circumstances.  Thanks.

@Toolguy and Rexford, my sales are doing better off Ebay.  I've been hit with that stupid 4% penalty because my store is below standard.   Everything I sell is tacked on an extra 4%.  So I've decided to pull my inventory, just let it deadline and have nothing in the store.  I'll pay the 4.95a month fee until May when it's up for renewal.

I sold 6 items in the last 3 days.  In the days before March, 2014, I would have sold between 55 and 70.  And I have 350% more listings.   I searched for some of my listings.  Buried.  There were 260 of one particular item, mine was 223rd out of 260.  I jump through all the hoops, but don't have free shipping on anything that is over 16 oz.   I am shown for a few hours every 8 to 10 days.  And I pay $60.00 monthly to be shown 24/7.  Should be illegal.

The end game of eBay is to offer cradle to the grave FREE products at ALL  cost shifted to the Seller. Why would a honest Seller even want to be on eBay with e bays hateful policies towards Sellers.
