Confusion Arises over eBay Payments Policy

Dear Ina,
A week and a half or so ago, you had an article that eBay was basically not allowing check payments any longer.

I moved and was changing my address on eBay and came across the following:

Payment and Pick Up Address
Please provide an address where payments can be mailed or where purchases can be picked up by buyers. This information is only displayed to buyers who pay with check or money order, or pay on pickup as a payment option.

So eBay itself lets me give an address but doesn't let me accept payments that way...huh?
David

Note from the Editor:  We blogged in late June about a clarification of eBay's payments policy prohibiting checks and money orders, but as this eBay help page states: "In-person payment methods can include checks, money orders, cash, PayPal, or credit card. In your listing, be clear about which of these payment methods you'll accept." In other words, you can accept "paper" payment methods for local pickup.

Just make sure the buyer purchases through eBay FIRST. Then you tell them that they can come over and pay with methods other than PayPal.

If the sale is not completed before the pick-up, the seller will be suspended for fee avoidance / selling off site.

This has been a recent subject on ECB. NEVER give contact information before the buyer makes the actual purchase, or you will be in trouble.

There are few different policies on Ebay regarding payment.  There are different policies for Autos, Real Estate, regular Ebay listings, local pick up, etc.

Local pick up listings the seller can accept pretty much any kind of payment you want.  Checks, money orders, cash, chickens, etc.  Ebay has no control of what you accept.

You are mixing the local pick up listing rules with listing that ship the item to the buyer.  Regular listings that ship their items have adhere to electronic payments.  Or so Ebay says.

Sellers are so easily confused by Ebay. Its no wonder they have so many problems.
