Seller Seeks Alternative to Canada Post

Dear Ina,
Thanks for publishing the Canada Post press release on Monday (May 8th). While it is no secret that CPC is among the most expensive postal services on Earth due to their lack of competition, they may now have cause for concern.

I was recently sent some targeted advertising from a Canadian company called Chit Chats Express who claim to be able to offer package forwarding to the United States at half the CPC rates. I first became aware of them as alternative during the postal labor unrest last summer, but they only operated from a few Canadian locations (i.e Vancouver and Toronto).

According to their ad, they are expanding and I am eagerly awaiting their arrival in Montreal where I operate. Perhaps Canada Post's gravy train is at risk of going off the rails.

Thanks and best regards,
Dave

Canada Post should take a hard look at the outrageous fees they charge for tracking.

Within Canada, the LEAST expensive tracking rate is $9.85 CAD, even for just a letter (where postage is 85 cents).

Canada Post does not offer a registered mail service to the US, because of (they say) losses in transit.  So, the LEAST expensive trackable item
from Canada to the US would be around $18.00.

For an international item, registered mail costs at least CAD $21.60 (US $15.75), and the maximum insurance  available covers only $60.

Any kind of reliable alternative service would be wonderful, as someone selling lower cost items to US/International buyers lose most of their potential customers when they see the shipping costs.

Maybe the USPS should offer the Canadians the gravy deal they give the Chinese sellers.

Americans don't mind supporting everyone....

I see some gigantic disconnect between what you are reporting and the way I consistently see CANADA sellers offering Extremely LOW COST postage INTO the USA on DVD movies and TV Seasons.  I mean like $6 while at the very same time the SAME weight First Class International package FROM USA into CANADA is $11.  Yes, I believe you... I'm just baffled by the seeming discrepancy and YES those $60 limits on insurance and $9 for tracking would essentially KILL any such service. ( Heck, that $11 example for a DVD TO CANADA actually INCLUDES door-to-door tracking and delivery confirmation.)

All I know is I can't buy/sell toys with Canada anymore because a 1-2 pound package between Ontario/Quebec and PA is close to 30 bucks.  It's been like this for over a decade and shows no sign of ever changing.  But, rejoice, knockoff garbage from China is just $1 via ePacket (sigh).

To the OP,

There are other companies doing the exact same thing as Chit Chat Express and I would encourage you to research same as there may be already someone in your area.

The reason for my suggesting this is that having dealt with Chit Chat here in Toronto, I can honestly say that you would have to look long and hard to find a bigger bunch of a$$holes than those folks!

If you're in the West Island, use GMX at 19 Donegani (next door the the post office). They forward to the U.S. daily. They are excellent and much cheaper. If you have volume you can do packages on a spreadsheet.

I would LOVE to know where Can Post is getting the numbers for their claim of "Losses in transit." It isn't on the U.S. side, believe me. I've shipped hundreds of packages to my customers through the USPS and NONE--not one--has become lost.

Further to angryllama's comments, just for fun, I weighed and set up a cased CD in an appropriate sized mailer, with a mailing weight of about 4 ounces, going from BC Canada to New Jersey.

The Canada Post options are:

Light Packet (not trackable, not insurable and no proof of delivery) = CAD $6.84 (USD $5.04)

Small Packet: (not trackable, not insurable, and no proof of delivery) = CAD $8.61 ($ USD 6.33)

Tracked Packet USA : includes delivery confirmation and up to CAD $100 (USD $73.53) insurance coverage = CAD $17.26 (USD $12.69).

Xpresspost USA: includes delivery confirmation and signature on delivery (same insurance coverage as Tracked Packet, but can purchase additional for a higher fee) = CAD $ 34.53 (USD $25.39).

Priority Post: includes same insurance coverage as Tracked Packet, but can purchase additional for a higher fee, delivery confirmation and signature on delivery = CAD $ 76.08 (USD $55.94).

These rates are from the Canada Post website, and as a business owner, I can get a small discount on the higher priced services (max 5% discount).

I have no idea how your Canadian seller can ship a DVD to you via Canada Post, for $6.00 trackable to your door, unless he pays pennies for his stock, and eats most of the shipping cost.

If your seller uses a viable alternate shipper who includes tracking and confirmed delivery for a low rate, he's fortunate, because there are no deals available through Canada Post.
