eBay Seller Mystified by Disappearing Views

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
Here is a letter to eBay about getting no views. Now I realize that views don't mean "sales", but last year items were getting lots and lots of views. Over 20, sometimes 50-100.

This year, starting around March, views have fallen off the cliff. I don't even look for "watches" because they don't turn into sales.

Another thing. I have moved much of my clothing to dedicated sites (where there are no Chinese sellers and promo ads) and seem to be getting more attention and sales than eBay. There is definitely something going on at eBay. I would like to hear from your other readers.

I have noticed the same thing, I believe it's ebay showing less search results to buyers to ''not confuse the buyer'' and also to prop up seller's price points so we are all not fighting one another to price of zero.  This gives ebay higher commissions, and sellers a higher price point.  I am against this strategy as buyers get less of a deal, and are less inclined to shop at ebay 1st.

I have come to this conclusion while trying to look for competition's products to list my own at a price to make it fly.  I used to see 2-300 results for  product xyz... now I see 20-30... what ever ebay decides to show. This makes it harder to price the market.

Anyone else's thoughts?

''This makes it harder to price the market.''

Precisely.  One of the most important aspects of selling is defining reasonable expectation of both sale and price, so to be profitable after all costs, tangible and otherwise.  Particularly true for consignments, which I did.  In ALL categories.

When my views nosedived in '13 due to eBay's machinations, and it became less and less viable to use as a research platform due to inflated sales results (unpaid and returns do not get noted, and do not thus reflect true market performance), and content reduction per category due to decimation by disruption and/or eBay closeting, we had to close.

As for the apparel categories - fuggetaboutit.  Hats off to those who still want to try (as independents or small shop outlets).

What's going on?  eBay wants full 'control' over inventory they don't own or have rights to, in markets they really don't understand, or think they need to, monitizing every element of the process along the way BECAUSE they have no product.

Ergo, their way or the hi-way.  Buckle up.

For this reason we closed our clothing store.  During the month of March our 260 items received a combined total of 195 views.  Our personal site is with another auction style platform that charges no listing fees, no final value fees, no fees period and has our IP redirected to it has received 783 views in the past 3 days.  Plus I am my own boss who handles my own possible claims without 3rd party big brother sticking their nose in.

What cmabresch said.

Don't allow them to continue to take your money and give you nothing in return.

eBay have the illusion that they are the only game in town. Those days have long been over.

If you have great items with 0 views that should tell you everything you need to know about their rigged search.

Moving my apparel & fashion to dedicated sites. No Chinese sellers, no promo ads. Trying to get my standalone website going.
Everybody should go to Ebay and lookup - Swap.com and Thredup.com (consignments) on Ebay.  Yes - the competition now has a store on EB.  They sell their items really cheap on their standalone site; and then up the price on Ebay.
Online retail has gotten crazee.

I have noticed the same thing.  But who can compete with China.  You can buy the same thing from China for .50 that you can buy from the US at $10 with free shipping.  I do not sell anything for less than $12 at a fixed price and it is almost impossible for me to offer FREE shipping but I do.  So what does that tell you about what US sellers make?  I cannot fathom selling anything for .50 and free shipping.

It's also happening with second hand or pre-owned stuff. Not only new.
Started in February March.

I find with the new item specifics I d not have to actually click on and look at anywhere near as many items as I did in the past.  Previously if I was looking for a pair or blue denim shorts in size 14, I would have to click on the listings to see what size they are. Now I can look at the same 20 listing and never click on a single one because item specifics allows me to search by size and I am able to see the pics without actually looking at the listing in a way that registers a view. It doesn't mean I did not look, it just means the seller does not know I looked.

I was trying to buy stock of an item I purchased last year. I searched the item, the seller's name and even dispersed a google search. Nothing. Luckily, I found an email she gave me from waaay back. Try to send good customers a personal email b/c eBay sux. I rarely visit them now b/c of this incident. The're horrible from a buyers perspective.

This may or may not be related, but about the same time that your saying the views started disappearing, is about the same time my emails from Ebay stopped showing me new listings from my saved searches.  If I don't get those emails, I rarely go into ebay to check each of my saved searches for new listings.  I recall several people complaining about this, so I know it wasn't just me.  Perhaps that explains part of why your viewings are down?  I've just started receiving the emails again, albeit sporadically, so maybe others are getting them now as well.  Hopefully, you'll see a bump up in your views!

If you opt-in to promoted listings, your views will skyrocket.

The problem is, your lowest profit margin items will sell, and you'll pay the base FVF of +/- 10% plus the add'l of 1-20% promoted fee, and you'll be working for nothing.

Because of the many folks involved with dropshipping from Amazon Prime, there are a ton of duplicate listings on eBay.

And, of course, eBay does not want to purchase more servers to handle the load (since they refuse to spend money to improve their infrastructure). Their only option, it seems, is to limit the amount of listings in search.

This is one main reason page views and sales are down- buyers simply cannot find what they are looking to purchase because of the limits in search capability.

Arbitragers who do not actually have their item in hand, combined with a company who does not possess any merchandise has created this problem.

As Amazon states that you cannot dropship using Prime as a vehicle to fill orders from eBay, I honestly think they welcome it, since this clogs the Bay's search engine with too many alike items, and buyers are heading back to Amazon to easily find the widget they are looking for.

Also, the limits in page views are perhaps created so desperate sellers will opt into the Promoted Listings program, since they perceive it will increase sales. This scheme, as mentioned above in this blog, not only costs a seller more to list, but also in higher fees on the back end.

This may be now impossible to achieve, but until eBay makes a sound investment in hardware and software, page views and the accompanying increases in sales will remain stagnant.

I know I sound like the proverbial broken record, but you should sell on eCrater. All of my items get multiple views, some in the hundreds, each month. Maybe it's because I sell collectibles, and eBay has somewhat abandoned that category.

iheartjacksparrow - I've taken your advice to heart and this week I have established a presence on eCrater (after selling exclusively on eBay for 14 years). I'm still building inventory and figuring out the ins and outs, but I'm hopeful!

Watchers, I just...

I've been having a decent couple of weeks and wanted to keep the momentum up so I put a couple dozen items with watchers on sale.  I thought eBay sent out e-mails when that happened but there has been no turnover.  When you can't do anything to goose sales, eBay feels like a job...in the sense that if you run short on this paycheck, all you can do is wait another two weeks for the next.
