eBay Recommends Sellers Lower Their Prices

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
I just went to my Unsold Items list and under the first item that just expired was the message "We recommend [sic] you lower the price. Similar [sic] items were listed lower and sold for between $xx.xx and $xx.xx."

Now, of course eBay doesn't much care whether you lose money on a sale because they're getting a nice juicy rake-off on both the item AND the shipping cost. But, this is just more of their "help" that sellers don't need.

I can lose money all by myself; I don't need them to tell me I can sell at below my cost just to benefit the over-paid management team in San Jose.

It might be interesting to see if others have seen this "recommendation" and what they think of it.
Regards,
Volvo351

I agree with the OP.  It's hard enough to make a profit and they want us to lower the price.  BTW folks, I'm closing out my AMZ FBM....it's not worth it since AMZ is preferential towards FBA and the 1c sellers.

Oh yes, I've seen this "recommendation" before but my situation is rather ironic. I sell unique jewelry that I handcraft myself. Telling me to lower my price because others have sold similar items for less makes me laugh out loud. No one else sells anything I sell.

Interesting how on today's email from ecommercebytes, the third link is "ebay recommends sellers lower their prices" while the FIRST link is "ebay raises fees."  Does ebay REALLY think its sellers are that stupid?

@rsimandi - that was my first thought as well. Ebay is getting to raise their revenue while telling sellers to lower theirs. Makes no sense.

Well, hmmmm, maybe the way to reduce our ever increasing eBay fees IS to lower our prices - then liquidate stock and walk away.

For those sellers who offer a specialty niche item, there is likely another venue to use that caters to that product.

I don't mean to sound like the sky is falling, but between eBay and Amazon - for countless sellers, it is.

I agree, most of my items are one item things and I have to make a decent profit on it in order to stay in business.  I don't need ebay telling me to cut my prices for their benefit just to move merchandise.  Ebay has such a wide variety of pricing that it ridiculous.  You can sell a quality item for around $30 and there will be some idiot that sells it for $5 which just throws a klinker into the whole senario of pricing.  Some of these people who sell on ebay are not business people, they are just people cleaing out their closets or giving to charity.  Most businesses cannot afford to be a charity.

Furthermore, we are already giving FREE shipping on most items and now they are wanting us to pay for returns?  Where will it end?

For the last two years I have been expanding BACK into Brick-and-mortar stores. I now have 4 locations in antique/collectable malls and I have plans to expand this year into 2 more. I also sell at the largest flea market in NJ every Sunday (Columbus NJ)
I have also greatly expanded my presence on Amazon which, though just as strict (if not stricter)regarding how sellers handle their business, has a greater presence and better reputation among buyers.

I have been decreasing my presence on Ebay to just selling items in lots or items that require a national audience (and cannot be sold on Amazon).

Ebay is restricting sellers and pricing itself out of business through the loss of those sellers (and, at the same time, doing nothing to advertise the platform).

Hm-m-m-n?  We are supposed to LOWER our prices....while eBay is increasing fees and decreasing TRS seller's FVF discount from 20% to 10%...in addition to shipping rates increasing.  REALLY?!?!  The whippings will continue until morale improves?!?!?!  It does not work that way.  It is time for eBay to reinvest in it's quality, committed sellers and make eBay a good selling venue.

Ebay has made these types of suggestions for YEARS.  They aren't forcing you to lower pricing, they are suggesting it.  That does not mean you need to comply.  I'm not sure why it is a big deal.

Ebay suggests things all the time.  In regards to the various suggestions they make, you don't have to comply.  If you don't like it, ignore it and move on.  It is as simple as that.

eBay makes some really stupid suggestions.  When you list an item, under the title are a series of dropdowns for brand, age range, new/used, etc.  I've always filled those in because that made sense.  What's eBay's suggestion?  Waste my 80-character title space with brand, age range, new/used, etc.  So "dur hur, gibs stuf for fwee" is hardly surprising.

I can't understand why anyone would sell on ebay anymore. I would rather lay my jewelry out on my driveway and run over it with a truck than put it on ebay.

Hmnn...Maybe I will raise my prices, and give my customers a coupon good for them to purchase more stuff from us (ie the ebay carrot of $30 of promoted listings)... Laughable! They people really are imbeciles and its why their stock never adds any value..

As usual, eBay's disconnect is staggering but not surprising.

Within days of announcing fee increases, discount reductions, and other seller defeating changes, this company is telling sellers to lower their prices?

Hey eBay wake up and listen to how tone deaf to sellers your company is!!!

This has been around for a long time. It is computer generated. Sometimes they are right and a lot of times the comuter is wrong because your items have differences. It would be best to suggest instead:  to review items sold before re-listening.

Volvo351 main complaint is that they are blaming eBay because they will lose money if they lower their selling price.
Losing money is your fault not ebays.
I am not defending ebay in any way, shape or form. I just learned a long time ago, in retail, when I made a purchase for resale the purchase price of the item had noting to do with my buying decision. It was always based on what I could sell it for. I know that makes sense, but as a shopper how many times have you perused ebay for something you were interested in and said to yourself "that price is crazy!" Our family would joke about a price by saying that the seller loves the item to much to get rid of it.
My seller tip. If you really want to sell an item and not just test the waters, is to go to "previously sold" auctions before you buy or list anything.  Generally speaking there is your market. High and low. You want to price it higher be my guest but don't blame eBay's algorithm when it tells you to lower your price.
