Seller Finds Search Flaw in eBay Catalog Feature

Dear Ina,
I am writing to you in hope that you might have some suggestion or pull upon a major issue I stumbled upon in eBay and was dismissed by their customer service rep.

I sell CDs (Music) on eBay. eBay has introduced what they call "Group Listings". I found that many of my listings were not showing up when I pulled a group. (About 60%).

The reason for this is that a UPC Code is required in the Item Specifics for the item to be placed in a group.

Sounds good - but many CDs from 1982-2009 were under the Columbia House Record Club (BMG Label). They do not have a UPC Code. They have a BMG catalog number such as D220154.

There is no provision for this number to be entered into eBay's Item Specifics so these CDs will not appear in any group listings. This effects millions of CD listings on eBay.

I wrote to you in hopes that you might steer me to someone in eBay that might listen. I used to have Hal Lawton's direct email but he is no longer with eBay.

Already, I can see the impact on my sales from this issue and have absolutely no one to turn to. Thank you for any help you might offer.
Peter

''...someone in eBay that might listen.''

Bigfoot.  Unicorns.  Roswell aliens.  What do those have in common with an attentive eBay?

They are all mythical.  Although except for the 'listening'  even the others are still open to possibility.

Hello Peter,

My name is Asaf and I'm the PM in charge of the eBay Catalog. I am directly in charge of how products get created and how these feed the new compressed search (grouped listing) functionality.
I would like to better understand your problem and potentially offer some ways to make sure your listings are exposed properly.
Please provide your email so we can continue this discussion offline.

Thank you,
Asaf

Peter

If the information in the above post doe not work out for you, go to the Ebay discussion boards.  Start a thread.  You may find more people there experiencing the same problem as you.  You also may be able to gather more useful information from them.

There is also the Weekly Chat on the Ebay discussion boards.  While they aren't always helpful, often they are or they will get you in touch with who can help.

It often is way too hard to get to the proper people so that you can get a problem resolved.  I hope you get the attention you deserve and then come back here and update the thread so that others in your position may benefit from your work in getting some answers.

Listing BMG or Columbia House discs is OK with the original UPC code for catalog purposes, and then noting (in the description and with photos) that it is a Record Club Edition, and it is the same as the original release, just with no factory barcode.

And, of course, you will need to sell it for a bit less than a store-bought package.

This will ensure your listing shows up in a search, since this key item specific will be included. Now it is up to the buyer to read the listing details and look at the photos before purchasing.

Have you tried checking upcdatabase.com for the original upc numbers?

I took Asaf up on his offer to email him as we were experiencing similar issues to what Peter was with listings not showing up when pressing the grouped listings filter.

Asaf was quite insightful on the catalog and process as a whole. It's important to realize this is quite a big undertaking on Ebay's part and it's not anywhere near completed right now.

I know most of the people here are still anti-Ebay for some reason....but Ebay is trying to make strides and be attentive. Yeah, they don't always hit on every change.....but I'd like to think they are trying to get the catalog thing right the first time.

Also, disregard 95% of what CS reps say on issues that isn't their area of expertise (Peter had said the CS rep had basically dismissed his issue). This happens on Amazon, too....seller support reps give bad advice or plain false advice on areas that they have no control or knowledge of.

Marie - go to the boards? sorry I rarely go there anymore - only in desperation - the trolls on the boards are such negative bashers and have run off most of the good sellers who simply seek advise. I don't even know why ebay has those boards anymore.  As for UPC's well let's see - antiques and rare hard to find collectibles - the unusual and bizarre MADE ebay - just where the heck do they think we are going to get those barcodes for the 1901 antique pocket watch or the 1950's retro lamp? Ebay had left us way behind the eight ball with no way to catch up. We can only pray these days that a buyer can find out items. Are you listening ebay trolls?

''but I'd like to think they are trying to get the catalog thing right the first time''

First time?  Ebay has been playing with catalog in books for years to the detriment of sellers there.
