Etsy Sellers Pay Extra Fees to Try to Get Visibility

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
On October 10 I went into my Etsy account to see what listings had expired, only to discover that the rest of my listings had been deactivated by Etsy. I had put my shop on a temporary vacation in order to update the active listings; most of them had expiration dates of October 13 to January 13. I had been vocal about Etsy's program of constant testing and experimenting with shops and buyers' experience. I had been in forum discussions about that as well.

I took the action as a subtle hint that I was not welcome there. So I closed my account.

It did not help that Etsy's visible catalog runs 250 pages. Once listings are pushed off the 250th page, they are not visible through to their expiration dates.

This means that one must renew listings more frequently than expected, netting Etsy more income per listing. Mind that the duration of a listing is 4 months. Other sellers have been forced to relist once a week to stay visible.

In this way Etsy has cheated on the deal, making the cost of listing there more onerous on the sellers.
T.

It's Horrible.
Sales are way, WAY DOWN.
After job #2, we just sit and watch "Gold Rush".
At least somebody's striking it rich.....
Why doesn't Etsy advertise on TV ?
Or Radio?
They want us to buy recognition.
THEY should be doing it.
It's Their JOB.
The dumbasses put themselves in charge, of RUINING everything.

At this point "Dead Malls" (YouTube) is a metafore for the last President's Slash and Burn we're living through.
If it Does turn around , it will be a miracle.....

I've noticed that I need to relist more often- to get in front of eyeballs. No relisting = slower sales. (Pininterest drives sales I've noticed).

Does anyone know of a service, that does this for a seller (relists your products automatically, on a shedule). It's a pain to manually relist, and sometimes I forget. Thanks in advance! Btw, Amazon Handmade has picked up for me during the past year. It does as well as etsy for me :-)

Good luck everyone. And I wish you strong Christmas sales :-D

If you are not on the first page of whatever search results, why bother being on Etsy?
You don't just post your item with a brief description, the price and a few crummy photos and expect miracles. There are ten thousand other schmos selling the same exact thing. Even if your item is a OOAK, there is someone else that will have it in their shop in a New York minute, looking spectacular, with SEO that guarantees first page of Etsy and most likely, and more importantly, first page of Google search.
Either work at it or goodbye and good luck at your local craft fairs.

I do not have any answers, but letting yourself get into the bottomless and unforgiving pity party doesn't solve a thing.
The best Etsy sellers pay a small fortune to stay on the front page AND their SEO gets them seen by Etsy search AND all other search engines.

To sell handmade anything, you need to spend 80% of all of your time marketing what you make. That includes most of your time working on your Etsy shop SEO, search being your most important marketing tool. All that time you spend on Facebook and Pinterest is a stupid waste of time if you don't show up in search on Etsy and Google.

Try having your own website, selling your items there and see how far you get without knowing how to be found on Google.
Etsy does have the eyeballs - you have to be jumping the highest and shouting the loudest from the crowd.

I TOTALLY agree that ETSY has SQUANDERED all the monies we sellers have forked over all these years. TV ads, radio, magazine ads and even billboards would have helped everyone immensely. Instead, the office workers got catered lunches and lattes in biodegradable cups.

I stay because Etsy buyers are mostly terrific, happy to find that special thing and we get paid with little problem. I have neither the time nor inclination to run a website of my own. Two Etsy shops are enough.

I don't know that Etsy goes around inactivating listings from vocal sellers.  Heaven knows that I've been vocal and critiquing the site for years, but there must have been a reason for the deactivation, if that is what truly happened.

Usually, it is an infringement issue of some kind, a reporting, or a violation of the TOUs.  There's more to this story.

^^
I've never seen an Etsy commercial on TV, radio or the internet.  I have an account with Tradesy and see my items float across the internet all the time.  "What does Etsy mean" anyway?  How about something more catchey like "Handmades"?

Etsy Seller- that is a great post and you bring up some very good points.  If anyone wants to know and understand how really pitiful Etsy search is and how impossible it is to get found, check out your stats and see how many visits you get from EXTERNAL SEARCH which is GOOGLE, YAHOO, BING, and other search engines.

In both my shops the number of visits from EXTERNAL SEARCH ranges from 1 to 2.5%.

Almost all the visits come from DIRECT traffic which is my own promotion.

Check out your stats and see what I mean.  I would be curious to know if anyone else has similar results.

I pay someone to promote my shops on social media and it is worth every penny.  It is the only way I get sales these days.

Etsy deactivates all your listings when you put your shop on vacation. Once you turn on vacation mode, you cannot edit your listings at all. At least, I can't.

I don't have an Etsy shop because I haven't gotten around to marketing my art.  However, I will say that I just don't believe in advertising.  Because here's the deal - I rarely, if ever, see anything relevant.

The radio advertises only a few niche products - identity protection (Lifelock), computer "cloud" backups, tax avoidance, legal services.  Newspapers are full of "your ad here" spots in between local lawyers and plumbers.

Television is similar, shilling auto insurance, TV subscriptions, cell phone plans, and plane ticket booking websites.  TV used to have a car commercial every break but they've practically disappeared since the 2008 crash.  I know show times are down to 19 minutes per half hour but I must be so desensitized that I don't even see "shovin' buddies" down in the corner advertising the next show.  I watch more than my share of kids shows on a kids network and I don't think I've seen Hasbro or Mattel or Nintendo run a commercial for anything in years.

Internet, well, if Google didn't track me across dozens of shell companies and fill my screen with Toys R Us ads for stuff I already bought or isn't in stock, it'd be nothing but a sea of "X weird tricks Y doesn't want you to know" and "these celebrities died or got fat but nobody said anything."

God, it's like going to the mall.  50 Aeropostale clones.  A boarded up toy store that still isn't paved over.  An enormous sparsely decorated card/gift shop where a book store, shoe store, bank, and Radio Shack once stood.  Maybe a CD/DVD shop that looks like a bombed out warehouse littered with hipster trinkets and is quite visibly hanging on the edge.  Why even start the car if that's what awaits?

So if Etsy or eBay are running commercials, I don't know who sees them or where.

I sold very briefly on Etsy - I never cared for their search results way back when - I'll never list there now - it's a corporation kids - and a bad one. It's a money hungry machine just like all the rest - I'll stick to the devil I know - at least I get results on ebay but then I go with the flow these days.

Just one more thing - I have NEVER found anything on google that takes me to an active listing on Etsy.  NEVER - they might was to start there if their going to pay for advertising. Clean up your dead ads. Nothing pizzes off a buyer than finding it - hitting the link and seeing anything but what they went there for. Idiots.

Some of you have commented that you have not heard of deliberate deactivation. Deactivation of my listings did not occur when I went on vacation a couple of months back - The site tells you that if your listing expires while on vacation it can be relisted while on vacation. It's the shop which does not appear while on vacation, so no listings are seen. But this time it did occur. Clearly Etsy is on a campaign to force critics out and paint a rosy picture of corporate health, while sellers are disenfranchised. But its having to renew more often than the period paid for indicates that points out the lie. That is where Etsy is apparently making more money, since I suspect that buyers have been chased away by the testing. Etsy is dysfunctional and failing, and it is the sellers which are bearing the burden.

Why would anyone relist if their listing is for 4 months?  Thats makes no sense,  They are just like ebay they are supposed to hold up their end of contract we made with the when we listed our products in the beginning.  We should be getting the same visability as all other Etsy sellers.

Why would anyone relist an item if they still have a listing for 4 months.  That makes no sense.  If anyone is having to do that they are in violation of the contract made between Etsy and the seller in the beginning.  Everyone who is listing on Etsy should get the same visability of their products as everyone else.
