Some eBay Top Rated Sellers Lose Plus Postage Discount

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
eBay sent an email on January 11th titled "here's important news about international shipping rates" that stated INTERNATIONAL shipping discounts would decrease slightly.

BUT they buried the lead. If you clicked on their link, you would see that Top Rated Seller accounts (which ship less than 300 packages a month) will no longer receive the Commercial PLUS rates for US shipments as of 1/22/17.

We ship a lot of USPS First Class Packages. A 15.99 ounce package was $3.65 and is now $4.30 - a 65-cent or 17.8% increase!

Of course -  if I pass the increase on to my buyer, eBay benefits since they get their FVF (Final Value Fee) on shipping charges.

Do you know if the USPS required this change? Or this just another way for eBay to hurt the small but loyal seller?

Thanks for all your information over the years,
Diane

First, I think you might be reading the email/chart wrong. Commercial Plus rates are extended to sellers with 300+ shipments, and to Top Rated Sellers. Meaning if you aren't TR but do ship 300+, you'll get the discount. I'm TR, but do not ship anywhere close to 300+, and I received the discount on labels I printed this evening for shipment tomorrow. Second, the price increase was due to USPS raising rates today.

Diane, USPS postage increases went into affect today. All sellers are effected. If you look, you are getting the discounts still. $4.30 is the discounted rate, down from much higher retail rate. Same goes to all priority mail packages. But the Commercial and Commercial Plus discounts as still there. Those are the best possible rates, and the rate you are seeing is that rate with the largest discount.

Also, you misread eBay's policy. It has always been TOP RATED SELLERS or Qualified sellers with 300+ shipments/month. That is not changing. Youa re not required to have both.
Here is the exact wording on eBay's site from that email:

*Commercial Plus pricing is available to all eBay Top-rated sellers and sellers with an average of 300 or more transactions per month, when you pay for postage and print shipping labels using eBay Labels.

This is supposed to motivate us to sell 300 a month. Maybe they should figure out how to attract buyers. When I view something on eBay, I get emails saying "We've picked this out just for you"  continually for an item I viewed but I didn't buy it for a reason I didn't watch it. I just was looking through items. It makes one NOT WANT to look eBay items with these corny (now there's a "corny" word) email titles thinking that I will buy the item. It annoys me so much that I haven't bought anything since they started doing it Amazon does something similar but it's more matter of fact and it is usually for something I already bought but won't buy again,, a one time purchase. Notice now that ads for whatever I have looked at appear everywhere on the internet on any website. We have google to thank for that!

Ebay needs the money so badly that they have to jack up our postal rates as well as fees. They are losing sellers right and left or many have gone to super cheap items that eBay likes so dearly.  Their logic baffles me. If you are selling 3000 items a month, that's pretty good and it's probably the chinese sellers. Punishment is not a good way to motivate sellers. There are many venues with lower fees that pay better and they do all the work but you keep the item until it sells. I never trust companies that keep your items. You never know particularly high end items.

Forget the 300+ shipment requirement. I recently signed up with Shipstation and get the CommercialPlus pricing anytime, even on the slower months. More than pays for the subscription.

As brentandbecca points out, no big news here.  Postal rates went up, eBay passed it through. I'm glad they left the discount in place so I don't need to pay a subscription fee to Shipstation. Another ''The Sky Is Falling'' letter written without a bit of research.  It's not hard to use Google.

While the rates did go up, yet another opportunity to remind sellers As I hear people over the years complaining about ebay and PP and buying postage from them, I don't understand why they don't jump onto the independent postage services that give an equally good deal. Why put yourself through this misery.

I forgot to fix my shipping amounts for this latest hike so that is one of the first things I have to do in the AM.

Diane

You misunderstood the notice.  You stated "...Top Rated Seller accounts (which ship less than 300 packages a month) will no longer receive the Commercial PLUS rates..."

That isn't how that statement reads in the announcement.  This is what it says "...Top Rated sellers AS WELL AS sellers who have an average of 300 packages per month—receive Commercial Plus pricing,..."

In other words TRS sellers AND sellers that are not TRS but ship 300+ packages a month can get the discounted rate.  You do NOT have to be both a TRS seller AND ship 300+ items a month.

The amount of $4.30 for a 15.99 Oz package FCP IS the discounted rate.  Full retail is more.

Ebay sent out notices of USPS's changes months in advance.  There have been articles here and many postings on the Ebay threads on the subject.

It is NOT a new thing for USPS to raise rates in January of most years and sometimes they have other rate changes in about June of some years.

There is no need to be upset with Ebay, they haven't done anything wrong here.

Ina, Why would you even print such garbage? It is OBVIOUS that ''Diane'' has no clue!!! Ebay has NOTHING to do with the Postage increase. BUT YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS! WHY THE NEGATIVITY? WHY THE MISINFORMATION? Why print something like this? Oh....I forgot.......You printed it just BECAUSE it puts Ebay in a bad light. Obviously you are so jealous of Ebay that you will print anything at all as long as it has a hint that it is Ebays' fault.

Calling You Out, you are wayyyyy off base. You sound like Kellyanne Conway.

Don't shoot the messenger. Ina should and does print opposing views. It is what a good journalist does.

We seem to be living in a world where people only want things published if it is what they want to hear.

Rexford, Is there any truth to this story? Are the facts incorrect? Are TRS losing their postage discounts? Did Ebay have anything to do with the postage increase?

With all the issues and outages eBay saddles us with, I don't understand why sellers continue to use them for shipping. I've always used a 3rd party shipping partner going on 8 years now and have never had to worry about printing labels or shipping. Use eBay for selling and use someone else for sending your packages out!!

Well, an editor certainly can (and should) print opposing views, but if a letter is factually incorrect, it doesn't help to give the incorrect statements a wider distribution.

Will, Rexford......
So.....will Ina print just ANY letter that is submitted? Facts are of no consequence? Maybe the letter wasn't written by her.....but the "negative spin against Ebay" headline sure was! She then printed it knowing full well it was NOT factual!

CYO is obviously a troll.

Excessive use of caps,  bizarre over-the-top negativity, and baseless accusations.

CYO just wants to stir up trouble and spoil everybody's day.

Why are you asking me that Calling You Out?  Why not ask Ina.

Sorry she isn't printing exactly what you wish to read, but journalists have been printing opposing views for centuries.  Ina herself may not agree with it.

Why don't we have Ina send each letter for your approval before she publishes.  Hmmm......because most of us want to see our journalist print opposing views. It helps us use our brains and do some critical thinking.

As others have said, the PURPOSE of ''letters to the editor'' are unfettered thoughts and opinions of people.  That is what it is all about.  This isn't the first time and hopefully it will never be the last time that a Letter to the Editor contained misinformation or misunderstandings.

What CYO is asking for is censorship.  Over the years of being on this site I've gotten to know Ina a little bit.  This is something I would never expect from her or the others responsible for putting this site together.

The writer of this letter is clearly misunderstanding this subject and hopefully the responses here have helped to shed some light on what she is upset about.  And hopefully she now has a better understanding and is no longer upset as it is nothing to be upset about.  it is just a normal course of business.  A vendor [USPS in this case] raising pricing.
