eBay Warns It Is Decreasing TRS Postage Discount

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
I received the following message in my eBay account titled: "Here's important news about international shipping rates."

The International Shipping Discount is Changing

The discount for USPS international postage will decrease slightly for eBay Top Rated Sellers who use eBay shipping labels. The change is part of a yearly review of rates.

- The adjustment goes into effect on January 22

- eBay Top Rated Sellers still receive up to 31% off retail standard USPS rates.

- You can see all your rates and discounts here.

As always, thank you for selling on eBay.
Sincerely,
The eBay Seller Team

LOL .. "NEW LOWER RATES!?"  as usual with eBay - things only go UP!  (except sales)

That's interesting that they are lowering the discounts for international mail when it appears that the cost of Global Express Guaranteed is the only international service that will be at a higher cost starting on January 22nd.

Where does it say anything about "lower rates" in this announcement?

Of course you can pin the increase on eBay no matter that the increases are the result of USPS changes.

Perhaps you could also blame eBay for the FedEx and UPS increases and maybe for the fact that toilet paper is getting more expensive!

Doesn't it have to do something with the phasing out of "commercial plus"?

I don't think this has a thing to do with commerical plus as they phased that change last year. To me they decided to try to make another .40 or more in my view on every sale to goose their bottom line.

Simply sign up with Endicia or one of the other providers and guess what :). You can get the cheaper rates and you also can avoid helping or assisting Ebay if you will in not getting any of that cash.

I am tired of seeing on my listings ads that take users off site so ebay can get short term money but long-term more and more customers going off site and never coming back.

They copy almost everything amazon does, why in the hell won't they copy what amazon does which is they don't send customers off site. Oh, I know the answer because revenue short-term would drop and the bonuses would too.

Depends on what method of shipment you use to ship internationally.  Last year Ebay negotiated a 15% discount on FCP International.  That was a better discount than any other site I sell on was able to get, to include Amazon.

There aren't going to be any lower rates coming this time.  It is my understanding the FCP International is staying the same, but there are changes to FCP Domestic that can sting.  And I'm sure there are others as well.

Commercial Plus rates are phased out as of 2017.  We are left with Retail and Commercial Base rates, if I understand all this correctly.

None of the other sites will get a lower rate on FCP Domestic.  This particular class in NOT negotiable.  So you can go to any site you like, the rate will not be lower for FCP Domestic than it is on Ebay.

FCP International, PM, Express and the like are negotiable with USPS.  But if the same holds true as it did last year, Ebay had the better price in FCP International.

I only use ebay for international and sometimes express mail; otherwise, I use stamps.com. I always check the rate first though to see if I can save any.

I suspect the Chinese sellers complained that the USA sellers were finding ways to be competitive with the subsidized postal rates negotiated by ebay and the postal service. TAKE TAKE TAKE ebay just can't TAKE enough. They have never given back to its sellers that I recall in 20 years on the site.

It won't be long before all those carrot jumpers will realize that they aren't any better than the rest of the sellers. In some cases they actually are worst.

Just don't ship internationally anymore - with 2x's the fees in ebay pocket they made it well not so profitable for me so I just quit.

It has absolutely NOTHING to do with "carrot jumping".  While some may not CHOOSE to comply with the rules to become TRS and/or TRS plus, others do make that CHOICE.  That doesn't make one type of seller better than the other.  It only makes their goals different and there is NOTHING wrong with that.

For me, my rules and policies are what they are and have always been what they are.  My policies are the way I prefer to do business and yes because of them I am and have been for years a TRS seller.

I don't do it to get a discount from Ebay.  It is MY PREFERRED way of doing business.  Besides the TRS discount hasn't been big enough for the last couple of years to get excited about.

I don't think I'm any better than any other seller selling responsibly on Ebay.  But because someone decides they don't want to be TRS because they have issues with Ebay's policies doesn't make them any better than a TRS seller either.  It is a two way street.

As long as you are a responsible & honest seller, that is what matters to your customers.  TRS or not.

@whatever

I'm not sure what you mean by "Just don't ship internationally anymore - with 2x's the fees in ebay pocket they made it well not so profitable for me so I just quit."

What fees are Ebay getting twice?  And Twice as much as what?

If you are referencing the FVF on shipping, Ebay charges the FVF on shipping internationally based on your stated shipping rate on your listing for Domestic shipping.

Meaning if you have a $5 rate for shipping in the US and internationally you charge $10, the FVF that Ebay charges is based on the $5.

If you offer free US shipping, then if you sell something to someone in another country and the shipping is $10, there is NO FVF on the shipping because you offered FS Domestically.

So if this is the only reason you aren't shipping internationally, you may want to revisit that decision.

I ended international shipping a while back thanks to eBay's forcing sellers to pay for returns. I have more than made up for the lost sales selling elsewhere.

Good move on my part, as eBay and their money grab just gave me yet another reason not to ship internationally.

eBay can't grow their business sales wise, so eBay have to get creative.  Someone needs to make it known to Wall Street that USPS postal increases are not "sales" growth for eBay.  Yes, eBay take more money from the percentage they receive from sellers' postage, but if this is the only way that they are "growing" eBay, then it is a sad state of affairs.

@rexford

It isn't Ebay's fault that USPS is raising some rates.

"Yes, eBay take more money from the percentage they receive from sellers' postage"  NO they do NOT.  I explained this a couple posts back.  You do NOT pay more in FVFs on shipping because shipping internationally is more expensive than Domestic.  That isn't how Ebay charges FVFs on shipping nor have they ever done that.

@feelingfroggy

Seems to me that you feel that non TRS sellers are better than those who are TRS sellers.  I'm saying they are both important and have equal value as long as they are ALL honest, responsible sellers.

You hold way too much importance on a TRS discount.  It just isn't that much money saved.  I think you have ideas about how much we save when the reality it is no where near what you must think it is.

I get it, you don't like TRS sellers.  You've made that really clear over the years.  I'm not sure why you feel that way as we are no different than other sellers.  We are just people doing a job the best we can.  Well at least most of us.  Many of Ebay's mega sellers are NOT TRS because they can't or won't adhere to the standards.

Many TRS sellers are individuals, not a big company or someone that has a few employees.

I have 2 eBay accounts

1 is TRS with a store the other is just a plane eBay account with Paypal micro payments.

Selling an item for $100

On z50com my fees are:

$6.40 FVF

$3.20 Paypal

$9.60 total

My vw account

$10 FVF

$5.05 Paypal

$15.05 total

A difference of $5.45 on a $100 sale

Now that really ads up by the end of the year.

Out of principle I never used fleabay or preypal for shipping. I know I did not get the fleabay discount for shipping, but I didn't care. used indicia for a long time, then switched to the free stamps site.

To just forgo International sales because of higher shipping rates and no TRS final value fee discounts is counter-productive to an eBay business.

I always add a handling fee to offset these losses. In fact, since most of my items ship free domestically, I make more money on overseas sales.

And have yet (knock on wood) to have an International return.

There are many folks clamoring for USA made vintage or other items worldwide, and they have money to spend. Only thing to be careful of are countries with poor postal systems (Italy, France, and all South American and Asian countries except Japan come to mind).

@Marie,

Can you elaborate on the following: ''If you are referencing the FVF on shipping, Ebay charges the FVF on shipping internationally based on your stated shipping rate on your listing for Domestic shipping?''

If I offer calculated domestic shipping, what ZIP code does eBay use for the international FVF? Further, does eBay consider my domestic shipping discounts for international FVF? These questions have never been answered.

@exdwh

Does this help you?

Final value fees on shipping
Final values fees on shipping charges are calculated using the shipping service the buyer chooses.

However, when you offer an international or one-day shipping service and it's selected by your buyer, your final value fee for shipping is calculated using whichever service is less expensive, either:
The first domestic service in your listing that isn't one-day, or
Your international or one-day shipping service
For example, if a buyer chooses international shipping and you specified free shipping as your first domestic option, you don't pay any final value fees on shipping charges for that item.

If international or one-day shipping is the only service you offer, your final value fee for shipping charges will be calculated on that service.

If you're a seller from one of the following countries (China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, or Vietnam) and your item isn't located in the US, final value fees on shipping charges are always calculated using the shipping option your buyer selects.

As
for the question if they consider your discount, I'm not sure what discount you are talking about.  Are you talking about a combined shipping discount?
