eBay Pats Itself on the Back...for Crappy Year

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
I just got an email from eBay with the following subject line:

"[member first name here], can you believe you sold for $x,xxx.xx in 2016 on eBay? See all your 2016 highlights"

Ina, only problem is, four or five years ago, I was selling triple that! And, of course eBay darn well knows it; they have the data. So, why would they embarrass themselves screaming about my "2016 highlights" when the truth is that they can no longer move merchandise to save their worthless butts?

Did anyone at eBay's Ivory Tower think this through, and grasp how bad it would make them look? I doubt it; they shoot themselves in the foot and ask Q's later!

You might want to put this up on your site and see if anyone else has a similar reaction. Freakin' incredible. But then, it's coming from eBay, so nothing surprises me anymore. That doesn't make it any less dumb.

Regards,
Volvo351

Hi Volvo351,

First, this note sounds like an annual activity report, not a sales comparison over time.

Second, why would you think ebay would assume they are responsible for the decrease in your sales on their platform? Perhaps you are responsible. Perhaps you have changed inventory to something not as 'hot selling.' Perhaps you use additional channels now that cannibalizes ebay sales.

My point is there are hundreds of reasons why a company's sales may decline beyond which platform you use.

I'd suggest starting there to analyze why.

And if you are so unhappy with the ebay platform, have you engaged them about it? If so, and nothing has improved, why are you still torturing yourself?  Move on!

2016 was a good year on eBay, not the best but far from the worst.

The harder I work the more I make, it's just that simple. . .

Yes I received this with the annual sales figure in bold stretched across the email. Doesn't matter how big and bold eBay makes this figure, it is still a pittance of what I use to make. Volvo, just ignore the blame the victim remarks by others. We all know doing everything right and jumping hoops means nothing to eBay. Ebay controls the site, the sellers' listings and what gets shown.

If I tried to sell the actual authentic OOAK Hope Diamond, eBay would probably suggest I put it at auction with a start of .99 in the jewelry fashion category..and it would either not sell or it would sell at .99 cents. Of course the Chinese, with Wenig's full approval for mass production, will flood the site and make boocoo bucks.

I've been selling on eBay since 2003 and 2016 went down as my BEST year EVER!  BUT... 2017 will kick this figures BUTT!  I will make this current year EVEN BETTER on eBay!  eBay is on FIRE!  I don't CARE what my competition does... and I don't care what CHINA does... I control my year... ME!  And it begins with my attitude because in my experience crappy attitude equals crappy year.

What does attitude have to do with eBay not showing my listings? Ebay's favored braggarts can always afford to have a great attitude.

Honeville obviously lives in Colorado and gets the best weed available.

2016 has been the worst year ever.  Regardless of how hard I worked and I would say I worked harder in 2016 than any previous year. 600K a year down to 110,000 with 300% more listings - and I am talking 1000's  of listings, not a few.  I actually am turning the eBay business over to my daughter so she can make extra income for her family and I am starting a new adventure.  Good luck with eBay people, it's gone for folks like us whether you care to see it or not.  Hey listen if you want to make 20k or 30K a year on eBay, yes you can still do it and good for you.  I am not one of those people.  I had a thriving business with exceptional profit margins.   July 2013's rollout of Cassini and the infiltration of the chinese seller in my categories killed us.   Seriously, the Chinese manipulate Cassini so beautifully there is little to be done in the categories they are in.  Good luck.

Ahhhh the chearleading from eBays 2 biggest kiss @$$e$. One who sells oddball tools and the other $2 t-shirts.

eBay did NOT have a stellar year - not according to the numbers and the financial people.

eBay stock is stuck at $30 a share with ZERO prospects of it getting to any higher significant number any time soon.

As noted by the financial people - eBay has ZERO plans for the future - and that email shows the desperation.

Hal said "theres no us with out you" - the biggest bunch of BS ever.

eBay AGAIN was mia at CES - and again, Amazon was everywhere. TV makers like LG are putting Alexa in their products, while eBay was not heard from or even seen. THAT, shows you exactly what the "state of the union REALLY is".

YES there are people who do well on eBay. Those people get seen all the time, get to handle their own customer service, have listing plans where they never pay and get to do Deal of the Day.

The rest of us shmoes, live off the crumbs eBay feeds us and tell us to be thankfull for it.

The email just twists the knife in the backs of the hard working sellers that eBay abuses ... 'nuff said.

I know more eBay cheerleaders then I do unhappy sellers!

That's a FACT

I am a member of more power seller groups and eBay groups than I care to admit.   4-5 years ago I knew more cheerleaders.  Today, I would suggest 99% loathe the company and the site.  Many of the largest sellers I know have left the site.   You can not refute that ya tool.

Purveyors of illusion typically rely on misdirection to mask reality, and upon the 'acceptance' of both the willing and the unwitting in their audience to suspend disbelief.

For those who have experienced 'success' in eBay's growing swampland of the eCommerce environment, congratulations on your positively spun glass 20% 'full'.  May you continue to be 'spellbound' by the 'magic'.

It would be interesting to learn what the lower limit of this congratulatory pablum might be, don't you think?  At what point does the 'noise' hold even less relevance than it's worth to take 'notice' in this particular context?

They keep trying to attract sellers and aren't putting nearly the effort in when it comes to attracting buyers.  Ebay does not care how the cash comes in.  They've been diluting the income over an increasing number of sellers for years.  They don't give a crap about you. That's been clear for quite some time now.

2015 was my best year on fleabay.
2016 started out great. Then fleabay but me in the beta that hid descriptions. No way to opt out. Sales died. Never recovered from that. 2016 sales were down 46%. Same product mix, same pricing formula. As soon as I sell off the rest of my inventory I am through with fleabay.

We also started multiple new accounts on eBay at the beginning of 2016.  All of the new accounts out performed old accounts for 6 months.  Then they go quiet and are "throttled."  One of the accounts was screaming towards 20K in sales a month.  Then at 6 months got leveled at 10K and it has been there since.   If I have a great day that puts the account at 11k I can count on BS sales until the account goes back under 10K for the 30 day period.    I am big numbers and data person.  You just can't refute this type of consistent data.   eBay has a governor on accounts.

Yeah.  Most of us (who need to) also put the seat down when we're through.

Oh look, another new ID has come to town, singing eBay's praises.

Welcome Honeville!

Rexford ... Hon Eville is not a new ID.

He/she/it is all over the eBay boards - singing eBays praises, trashing sellers and telling eBay that their returns policies are not strict enough.

He/she/it sells (lists) 100s of $3 t-shirts but doesnt understand/will never understand the difference between that cr@p and a $200 headphone or antique.

When they have an issue, they just trash the shirt and ship a new one - and that doesnt work with the items the rest of us have in the real world.

They havent posted on the boards in some time (I do my best to thrash them good each time they post something stupid)(right of passage you see) - but I see they have time now to post more stupid things here ...... :(   (brings down the board IQ)
