Are Your Sales Down this Month?

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
We wonder what's going on with eBay! Sales have basically stopped - it's all over the eBay Community Boards.

For us, this "stoppage" has been going on since early September. Also, we have been sellers on eBay since 2004 and we have never seen it this bad.

Why don't they fix it? There are still rumors out there that new management is still in negotiations to sell the thing.

What have you heard?
Thanks,
Robert

eBay is not in the works to be sold. It's being investigated. The more reports that are submitted to the "Tell Us What You Think" links (all over eBay), the better and faster eBay can resolve the problem.

The problem is that eBay buyers are being driven away because the pages are coming up on most browsers as being insecure. They are showing up as HTTP instead of HTTPS like it should be and most people who use the web will shy away becasue they believe that the whole web site is insecure and just not that page.

This was talked about in a previous thread:

http://www.ecommercebytes.com/C/letters/blog.pl?/pl/201
6/9/1474386067.html

When
you sign in it is secure with HTTPS but as soon as you go to the site content it goes back to HTTP and no one will buy or even look any farther becasue of all of the hacking that has been going on and is still going on in the news they just pack up and leave. All of Google is secure, so is Amazon and PayPal.
Your average every day user expects when they sign into something that it will all be secure. They do not know of the days before HTTPS and they can not even fathom having to deal with something that is not secure. They expect it and if it is not there they will not having anything to do with it. They hear on the news that Yahoo was hacked a couple of years ago and did not let anyone know and are still being quiet about it.

I do not know if eBay has been hacked or it is being done intentionally but it is driving buyers away by the hoards.

@wwb2016

Being "investigated" by whom? For what reason or reasons?

The "tell us..." links don't always work.  For example the Send Us Your Feedback link on the new and improved Listing Form has been disconnected for at least a couple of months now.  Or at least it has been for me.  I guess they had enough FB on the subject and didn't want anymore.

It's very possible there is an investigation, since all the materials were purchased on eBay to create last Saturday's NY & NJ attacks.

Sales have been going down and this could be the latest reason for buyers staying clear of eBay. Next week are the debates....

Our sales have dropped like a rock in the past two weeks. 3 weeks ago sales were great so I just figured that we were being throttled......again!

I always had high hopes for Wenig, but it has come to fruition that eBay under his leadership is much worse than eBay under Donahoe's leadership.  Who would have thought that could be possible.

Sales decline  Random items removed, listing gets more difficult, EBAY wants free shipping offered and shipping costs exceed profit ability..I don't get it.  16 years, and it has gotten harder and harder..

The problem is very simple, too many sellers, not enough buyers, and search is a disaster.

Overlaid on top of this is back to school has taken time, money and attention away from the site for the moment.

Yes, sales are even more down this month; I go days without anything, then a couple of sales arrive at once. There has been a distinct problem since the 1st Sept (distinctly worse, that is, than the general catastrophic slide in sales since May 2014).

Hmmn... Our sales have been down year over year for several years now, and low and behold this Sept has been our best month in a LONG time.. That tells me that ebay has tinkered with the search a bit and my stuff for some reason is now getting more favorable placement.. Now I say that, and I had a good first couple of weeks (500% better than last Sept and on par with when we were averaging $500 a day in sales) but the last 5 days have been lagging back to where I was for the last 2+ years ($50-75 in sales).. Something is up, and as usual it proves that this is a manipulative, classless and unethical organization...

Just to add one more seller's experience.

My eBay sales were at their 2015 level from January through March 2016. They crashed in April, and have stayed low ever since. (I notice that each of the last three April's my sales crashed. I think this is the month eBay reduces exposure for small and medium sellers each year to shift more traffic to their preferred sellers.)

I am winding down my eBay selling, I downgraded from Pro to Basic store level in March 2016. My inventory is about half what it was last year. So all that factors in here.

September 2016 is trending to be my  worst sales month on eBay since before I opened my store in 2011. That said, my September sales are not THAT much lower than my April-August sales, down about a third.

I gave up on eBay ever reviving as a good selling venue for small sellers in November of last year and stopped buying new inventory. I handle eBay's crap much better since I made that decision. The best advice I could give to any eBay seller would be to follow my lead and put your time into finding other venues on which to sell or to find other ways to supplement your income. There is no reason for anyone to count on eBay improving as a selling venue in the foreseeable future, certainly not under current management.

Sales are pretty much where they've been since the great Google/EBay dust-up of a few years ago.  Some weeks a little better, some a little worse but profits down 30% overall since that time (but pretty steady over the past year or so).  That being said, I did laugh that eBay wants to differentiate itself from Amazon but is still pursuing a catalog sales approach.  It seems like they don't know WHAT they want to be.  All of that being said, I have hope which I have not had in a few years that things will turn around.  Been doing this a long time as a nice supplement to my income from my day job, and I will continue to do so.  But now there's hope that maybe eBay will find its identity and stick with it.  Though I am hedging my bets by buying much less inventory than I have in the past- and am selling off from the excess I've purchased in the past- so when you're selling product that was bought and paid for years ago...it's easier to make money.

This is more than ''too many sellers, not enough buyers''.  I have purposely listed items that have high sell through rates at high prices.  Not only have I not sold 1 buy-it-now item for 8 days, I have not had 1 bid yet on any of the 75 auction items (auction ends Sun).  Also, I have ''1'' watcher on 2 items with 4 or less views on all items (1 or 2 are mine when checking).  There is a major collapse across the board, particularly in search that is causing these issues.  I really have no words at this point as it is beyond rediculous.  How does this company make their revenue.  From my perch, it is not from me or those like me.  I do think this is a silent purge of small sellers or sellers of particular goods.  Somebody is achieving sales....and it is not me.  I am about 45% under the ''secret limit'' I somehow match every month with about 1 week to go in the month.  Let's see if I have a burst of sales.  If not, there is a big issue behind the scenes they are not disclosing.  If I do match, blatent manipulation of search.  I have never encountered in my entire life a for-profit company that does not want to generate revenue and is so anti-customer on virtually every level.

Steady as she goes.

Sold just a little over $5000 last month and just under $16,000 for the last 90 days.

eBay's been pretty consistent for us over the years.

I'm just a small seller with an average of 150-200 listings going at any time

If your stuff isn't selling on ebay it's either OVER priced or unwanted merchandise.

I could sell 100% of my listings if I lower the price.

Some of my items sell with in an hour of being listed which means I priced it too low. If an item takes more then 30 days to sell I've priced it too high.

When you're selling on eBay you have to compete with other sellers of the same item so if you aren't priced low enough someone else will get the sale.

I prefer to move merchandise for a lower profit then wait a long time to hook that BIG fish. Many smaller fish can feed the family. . .

The eBay ocean is full of buyers (fish)

BitbyBit, now you want to suggest that Ebay is at fault or is partnering in a terrorist attack?!?!?  Really!  Not the sellers that sold the stuff to the terrorist, but Ebay is at fault?

The stuff sold to them was legal items that could have been purchased elsewhere, but for whatever reason they had they purchased the items from SELLERS on Ebay.

The
bombings happened last week.  So how could this have such an impact on Sept. sales when this horrible event did not even happen till the later half of the month.  Talk about a reach just to blame Ebay for something this horrific.

@toolguy. Once again you have no idea your items may be different than millions of others. Sales are way down over 50% from last year for the majority of sellers and that is fact not a rumor. There are problems but I believe it is google mainly not showing items or burying them. That is the case with other search engines also.
Then you add in the other ongoing problems on ebay, glitches, bad customer service, the 100 percent guarantee, the inept report a buyer and it goes on and on.
We do not base our sales by comparing them to yours we base them on our actual numbers like most sellers. Sales are down and it is ebay's fault for not working with google and other search engines and for not running their site in a honest, respectable way.Instead ebay has chosen deception and do nothing to make money. Wenig is not going to fix anything, he is John Donahoe's puppet whois still running the show

@ EFC

Who said anything was broken on eBay? You & a few others here?

You say sales are down 50%, maybe for you but not for me or any of the sellers I follow.

I don't think Wenig needs to fix anything. eBay's been working since I 1st started selling on the platform in 1998. Things have changed but so have I as a seller.

What's the problem?

Toolguy, we've heard it all before. And before and before and before. Put a lid on it.

We have your repetitive and boastful condescending speech memorized. I laugh out loud every time you try to advise someone. You have the business knowledge of a snow pea.

It is clear  to me why you were banned from the eBay discussion boards.
