Customers at the Mercy of Shipping Carriers?

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Here's a letter referencing an article from last October, it's a reminder that higher shipping rates are on the way for next year.

Dear Ina,

Ref: UPS Announces 2016 Rates and Higher Fuel Surcharge (Oct 2015) - link

Thank you for the article on UPS Rate due to Fuel Surcharge.

The shippers whom use UPS and FedEx did not do much to block the higher rate hikes because they just pass the charges on to the customers.

So can nothing be done by the customers and are we to assume that we are at the mercy of UPS and FedEx?
Regards,
Matt

You might want to toss USPS into that mix.

The rate hikes for 2017 are going to be worst so hang on to your wallet as your going to need a bigger bank balance to pay the costs.

@froggy

What has USPS announced as their changes for next year?  They already have them approved?  More info please as I certainly overlooked, slept through or otherwise missed this.  LOL

Fuel costs are down significantly and yet they keep the cost to the consumer rising. A rip Off? Yes! But with all the politicians in their pockets don't expect it to change ever. Bill and Hil started this ''pay to play'' right out in the open and guess what, no one has challenged them or any other corrupt bunch.

@Marie - I hadn't heard anything about a postage increase in 2017, so I started looking around the internet. Everything I've read so far is that the USPS price hike will be "minimal." Here is a link to a bunch of downloads that I didn't have time to read:

@jack

Thank you for the information.  That is all I've heard about too.  I'm hoping froggy will come back and update us on exactly what they have read or heard about so we can all be better informed and possibly prepared.

Everyone needs to get the word out to their Congressman. No postal rate hikes for Americans. Instead, a delivery tax on International packages paid for by buyer at the time the original shipping label is printed. This balance the Fair Trade for all sellers.

If you want USPS rates to stop rising, contact your representative in Congress.  They changed the law.  The Post Office is no longer subsidized (i.e. they MUST charge enough to cover costs), plus they are stuck with an outrageous requirement that their pension fund must be 100% funded.  No other business, private or public, has been saddled with that expense.  I believe Congress wants them to go under so their best buddies can take over the industry.

@tiastreasures

We should note that not only does the pension need to be fully funded, which all should be IMHO, but the kicker with USPS is it has to be funded for the next 75 years.  Does anyone know any agency or company that has to do something like that???  75 years.

Imagine all the money being made by the funds holding all that money!!!!  Humm, could that have anything to do with it???

I would like to know where all that funded pension money is being held. How much is there and who has access to it? May sound like stupid questions but trusting the government nowadays hasn't been particularly strong.

The big Wall street banks are holding on to it and making money off of it. Nothing has changed they are all corrupt in Washington.

@bill

Do you know for a fact that is where it is or are you just guessing?  I'm actually quite curious to know what entity is really holding the funds.  As it is HUGE!!

Marie;

It was a joke. The USPS is part of the government before and still is now. The original pension system was the CSR; Civil Service Retirement. After 1986 it was all changed to the FER: Federal Employee Retirement. Do not worry thought that you and many other people do not know how it works because many of the postal employees don't know either.
The federal retirement program that was set up was to give all government employees a huge retirement benefit that is part FERS, part social security and a savings plan. When a person leaves before retirement from the government they no longer get money from FERS (it is topped out at that amount and stays at that figure for ever) but they still can contribute to the SS and SP.

I have a friend who retired from the Post Office and is making more money from his retirement benefits from there then when he worked there.

When the PO went to as supposed private company a bunch of legislators, knowing that it was a dying business at the time because of email, got the bright idea that they should have the PO FERS funded to cover any losses that would be incurred to the system because of a lower employee count contributing to the system. They diod not want to have it go bankrupt becasue if it ever did us taxpayers would be paying the bill as it is with any government, both federal and state, retirement account.

All of the money that is contributed to the FERS is supposedly held by the treasury just like any SS payments.

I am surprised the Tool Guy did not know this but then again he is probably just like 80% of the other PO employees that have no clue at all as to how it all works.

That's what I thought, but I wasn't sure.  I am just curious how and where they hold all this money.  It is such a ridiculous requirement.

Thank you so much for all that fantastic information.  I find it VERY helpful in better understanding this.  I really appreciate it.
