Chinese Accounts Ruining Amazon Apparel Catalog?

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
Any thought as doing a story on the just launched sellers ruining Amazon's apparel catalog? The problem has been going on for months but seems worse than ever and will ruin the holidays for many sellers.

If you aren't familiar with it, sellers presumably in China open multiple accounts and take over Amazon ASINs. With four and five week ship times. These accounts most of the time never a ship a thing but if they do it is a fake.

Amazon tries shutting the accounts down only to have them replaced by thousands more. It has crushed our company's sales since May.

Please keep my name off of the story. There are many threads about this in the Amazon seller board.

It's made shopping for clothes online more difficult, that's for sure.  Amazon's filtering options are just lousy here.  Choosing Prime or free shipping removes many of them...along with many perfectly fine domestic options.  Otherwise, you click through a million bizarre "China size" charts that are a gamble at best.  You almost have to buy 2 sizes because of the wait even though you know at least 1 will be wrong and can't be returned.  Amazon is every bit as screwed up as eBay, just in different ways.

The same thing has been going on for years now on ebay, in apparel categories and MANY others.. Don't know why Homeland Security doesn't do something about all the IP Infringement and the big sucking noise as more money leaves our country, but I imagine they are just following orders from Obama.. Let's hope the TRUMPSTER comes to the rescue!

I ordered over $5,000 worth of stuff from one of these fake sellers. I figured that Amazon would have my back if it turned out to be fraud, but it doesn't look like I'll be able to get my money back until January.

1. The seller never replies to messages
2. I filed an A-Z claim, they never responded, and I still lost because they said it was too early.
3. They "shipped" without a tracking number and the carrier & box size/weight did not reflect what the product should have been.
4. All the products they were selling have been removed.

Um, no brainer.
Sorry, yes, they are. What is really cool too is when someone buys from you and then they return it, only it is some look  alike garbage they bought from another seller.

If you want to win an A-Z on Amazon, you have to follow the rules as both a buyer and a seller.  You can try to do a chargeback though if you never received the item. Make sure the amount of time has passed since it should have been there, not the amount you wish it would be there in.

Also, part of the problem is amazon, they need to limit the new sellers to a few listings until they get feedback and time behind them.
It is crazy for them to allow someone to list thousands of items overnight, collect money, never ship and then just leave and do it all over again under a different name next month.

The solution is to double charge the Chinese sellers.  Almost like a tariff.  So if EB US sellers are charge 10% on FVF sales, the Chinese should be charged 20-30%.  See where that leads.

They are very aggressive and what seems to be the CEO's theory is more is better.  In every corner of eBay they sell for pennies on the dollar.  Our best hope is to convince US buyers, it is best to build our economy where you live. Very Aggressive!! Watch-out and our government just gave them another sweet-heart deal with shipping. Who is working to protect us?

I very much like the suggestion of some kind of tariff on Chinese goods and hope that Trump will do something for the little guys and gals as he promised.

For too many years American small sellers have been getting screwed by our own Government via E-packet and other programs that have destroyed the free market and level playing field.

Also, what ever happened to our anti-trust laws?  Amazon is a monopoly that needs to be broken up- FAST.  Jeff Bezos has way more power than any one person should be allowed to have.

All I ask is that he be made to follow the same laws as any other mega corporation.

And that goes for Facebook as well.  Break up the monopolies and make them pay their fair share of taxes.

They destroyed my ebay business with their fakes and multiple accounts.

They should close their accounts and ban them.

Instead the post office gives them postage deals so they can ship for a lower price than a US seller can ship.

I hope China does get tariffs on them. We need some type of balance.

They can and do send their products to FBA. It is increasingly more common. They have ruined many listings I was on by causing reviews to plummet (and thus my non-FBA sales) while having their own feedback crossed out by Amazon allowing them to have 100% positive in many cases.
Since Amazon has required them to now have a US address for returns they also now have an address they can use as a US location for any other purpose.
Amazon is simply not serious about the issue, if they were, they could shut it down today.

I think you miss the point of Franks post.
You must think that because items are made in China, that that means that you are selling/shipping from China.  Do you really think that your products should be stolen and copied by the Chinese?

Almost everything I sell is made in China, most likely you too.

Perhaps nothing can or will be done about this, but perhaps more companies can manufacture here and maybe we can do something about the inequity of giving the Chinese preferred treatment over US sellers at the post office at the very least.

Look at terapeak.  In the CSA categories, there was not a single China Seller in the top 20 a few years ago.  Now they maintain the top 20.  eBay's click's vs. purchases algorithm allows the Chinese listings to continue to thrive and while they are completely obnoxious to most buyers the data suggests otherwise (another example of big data killing marketplaces).

The infiltration of the Chinese seller in the Musical Instruments category has killed that ebay category as well.  The entire reason sites like Reverb, Etsy and others have thrived is due to eBay's complete mismanagement of this problem.  eBay continues to create it's own competition and ultimately demise by sticking their heads up their numerical-data-driven asses instead of listening to their users.

Hopefully the Chinese will migrate to Amazon and leave eBay altogether.

Amazon is aggressively trying to get Chinese sellers to sell direct on amazon and they are offering training to these companies.  Customer experience is always first and Chinese by selling direct can sell at much cheaper prices that US companies.  Yes, there is the temporary problem of scamming Chinese sellers.  But in the long run legit professional Chinese sellers are the ones you truly need to worry about.  Amazon will get the multiple account Chinese sellers problem under control, sometimes though it takes more time that we'd like.

Chinese clothing is a scam. They use a designer's stock photo, all pretty, well tailored, quality fabric, and, for 90% off... the cheap buyer gets a Halloween costume that does not fit... You get what you pay for... folks.

All of us are affected by US politics.  Because of NAFTA and other very bad trade agreements, US manufacturing is non existent.

Thanks to our own corrupt politicians, the unions and endless regulations that kill small businesses, manufacturing in the USA has become completely impossible
and unprofitable for most companies.

China does not have these problems.  They are allowed to use slave labor.  They don't have environmental regs that kill clean coal and other fossil fuels.  They pretty much do what the hell they want when it comes to manufacturing.

No way can a US company compete with them- it's not a level playing field.

Sure, Trump products are all made in China.  So is everything else;  just look around your home and try to find one or two things that are made in the USA.

We have to look at the bigger picture.  Stop forcing our own manufacturers to shut down.  Make it profitable for them to be here and hire American labor.  At least level the playing field.

Break up the huge monopolies like Amaazon and Facebook.  They have too much power.
