Is eBay Encouraging Shoppers to Return Items before Received?

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
Just wanted to give you heads up about how eBay treated a seller. I had about five items from different sellers showing being shipped with the blue box showing Leave Feedback except for one showing Return Item.

Finally on the day it showed Delivered it went back to Leave Feedback.

I called the seller and gave him an update on what I found. He thanked me for the info but did not seemed concerned but would check it out if he started getting a lot of returns.

His score is 99.9%. What kind of message was eBay trying to show ????

I've had Return Item as the main option before. I just ignore it and find the Leave Feedback in the drop down. I assumed it was just another method for eBay to try to ruin small sellers since if I wasn't paying attention I would have probably opened a case by mistake.

Sellers are complaining about the high rate of returns lately, so this explains it! Though I suspected they were pushing returns somehow.

eBay LOVES returns since it costs them NOTHING to be the "hero".

eBay sellers are bad people, scum of the earth, rotten stinkin' nasty people who spend their days thinking of ways to rip off customers ... oops sorry thats EBAY. But thats what eBay TRULY thinks of its sellers.

It helps that eBay and Paypal make money on the return (so on the transaction, even when a seller looses money and the item(s) eBay & Paypal both make money 2x each).

eBay just simply stinks - from top to bottom.

I know - I hear "so if its so bad, why are you still here"?

Why? Cause' 11main is dead, Sears is dead, Rakuten is dead, shall I go on?

If eBay wouldnt hide listings, play by the rules and follows the law - it would be a great place.

Now its simply a den of thieves.

Face it, this invitation to "Return" an item even before it is received is just one more example of the utter incompetence of the people running (and employed by) this unscrupulous, clunky, eBay operation ...

Yes, although encouraging isn't a strong enough word--they are doing all but asking the buyers to return the items.

Didn't someone say that they make a profit off of the return shipping labels? Now THAT is desperation.

ebay makes money whether the customer keeps or returns an item.

They do not care about either customer or seller.....just making a buck.

Thats why the site, search, and   the general atmoshere stinks.

Ebay is the slum lord of ecommerce.

After 18 years of selling on eBay (yep, almost from the beginning!), I had my first return last month. The item was sold as vintage (and I truly believe it was/is), however the customer insisted it was new. Needless to say, this bidder has now been blocked.

Sierra, we sold a vintage item from the 1970s a few months ago and the buyer filed an case complaining that the item was old.  :)

We had a very similar problem we had a new old stock vintage tie tack , now new old stock means the item was indeed over 25 years old but still new in the box, unused still with tags item sold for 25.00 was only small gold item back was gold filled, buyer opened complaint saying the item could not possibly be vintage because it is new in the box, needless to say the rep at ebay said there was no such thing as new old stock, I asked her to please place that in Cassini she said "oh" that should not be because it is contradicting statement in the title therefore the as usual buyer was correct only at freebay...

Ebay makes more money on returns because the seller has to pay fees to have the same item sold twice.  They also make money on the shipping labels etc.  Returns are a "win-win" for Ebay, the dirtiest company on the planet.

@pace306

Yeah, eBay would indeed be a "great place" if it stuck to its knitting - operated as "just a venue." And, if PayPig would simply TRANSFER FUNDS, instead of sticking its nose where it don't belong, it would be great payment service, too.

Imagine if MoneyGram or Western Union attempted to take back money that was conveyed to you via wire or a paper MO? Well, that's how sleazy PayPig is.

eBay has screamed about the ostensible value of "feedback" since the beginning. Their FAILURE in this instance to encourage buyer to leave +FB and instead prompting a return is just Biz as Usual.

Hey, Devil Wingnut, if you're listening - and I know you basically REFUSE to do that - why not use this opportunity to right a wrong and show sellers you give a carp? What's that - you don't? I figured as much.

I'm used to wading through a lot of "Buy This" nags from sites where I buy something, but only eBay shoves it in my face every step of the way that I can RETURN my purchase, and also I can RETURN it for a full refund, and by the way, do I want to RETURN my item? Thus is clearly upper-level management sheer stupidity.

All this suggests is that eBay is becoming ever more desperate to retain buyers than they are sellers ...

desperate to retain buyers than they are sellers ... pretty lopsided equation. eBay's got nothing without sellers.

@RCL,

Stop kidding yourself that eBay needs sellers ...

In eBay's calculations there are eBay "preferred" sellers and eBay "non-preferred" sellers; only major brands/distributors/merchants fall into eBay's "preferred" category; otherwise, you fall into that category disdainfully referred to by Johnny Ho as "noise" ...

Undoubtedly, eBay now needs, even more than ever, buyers to feed to their "preferred" sellers ...

Good luck with that quest Devin Little ...
