Are Incomplete Buyer Addresses on the Rise at eBay?

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
During the past week I've had two purchases with invalid addresses on eBay. One only had name, Chicago, IL - no street name or number. The other had what I assume is a street number and no street.

I have tried to contact both buyers, even calling, with no results.

For the life of me, I don't understand why eBay lets people sign up without a valid or complete address.  Whenever you fill out a form anywhere, it won't let you advance until you've filled out all the fields.  Also it seems to be the only company that doesn't have "address check" like Stamps and Endicia do.

It's so frustrating, and there's little a seller can do.  I've called and it's the same CS line, "we're sorry......xxxx"

BTW, the PayPal information is the same.
Thanks,
S.

It is frustrating, and what is more frustrating is that as a result, it hurts our shipping metrics, because we can't ship without an address.

all sites that allow people to register without information are frauds this also allows people to register under several names without getting caught, freebay is the king of all sites that is because people can register under 25 different names in case they decide not to pay, in addition this makes freebay look larger to its stock holders saying we have 100 million users, however the reality is they really have say 25 million users registered under 4 names each

only on freebay can you get goods free and free shipping too!

This is indicative of the half baked nature of the way things are put together at Ebay. Requiring shipping fields to be complete is common sense. Yet they threw the process out there with flaws. Meanwhile Ebay likes to focus time and resources to processes that add little value. (A perfect example is the redundant question about whether or not a delivery arrives by a certain date.) When this sort of thing comes up, I give the buyer until 5pm the day I am going to ship to provide a correct address. No response, I cancel the transaction and refund the money. ''Problem with the buyer's address'' is a valid reason to cancel an order. I don't spend any more time than that with these problems.

I've had 2 of these in the past month.

one was:

John Doe
123 Main st.
3apt0
anywhere USA

The guy lived in apt. 204

The other one was a APO

John Doe
CMR 416 unit 1111
APO APO/FPO 90000

The last line S/B

APO AE 90000

eBay shipping would not print either one until corrected.

I was lucky with the APO buyer but not the other, had to reship twice, package lost and got our first charge back in 15 years :-(.

At least the buyer hasn't left a negative yet.

BTW customer service told me to go ahead and ship, I would be covered by seller protection. Really?
They're concentrating on metrics and algorythms and can't even handle basic address input.

Seller Protection. Isn't that one of the stories in Grimms' Fairy Tales, right next to Rapunzel and Cinderella?

this feature is unavailable since 1/14 I think it was retired there is no such animal and anytime they tell you to ship something be sure to well document who you are speaking with date/time and reference number as if you do not there will be no record that they told you to ship an item as most CSR that work for freebay do not do their job

Happens all the time on ebay but since you are the seller it is your fault.
Ebay is not making buyers register properly nor are they confirming anything

I had this problem with another selling site.......they thought nothing of it, and of course, gave nothing for my losses due to mis-shipped packages.
Finally I took matters into my own hands.  I had customers resend the funds with a correct address showing in PayPal, cutting the selling site out of their fees!  They didnt catch on to this for several weeks.  I continued complaining and they continued ignoring my emails and not doing anything about the months long site error!  So I found where the site permissions were and cancelled the selling sites permissions to take money out of my PayPal account, paying the fees myself.  When they continued charging me without fixing the error I did a charge-back for 3 times they took money from my account-in spite of the no-permissions option being in effect.  By now they were hundreds of dollars in the hole and finally the chief contacted me!  They continued to go on as if nothing was wrong-while demanding their money back.  I eventually left the selling site owing them money.  Nothing compared to how much money they lost for me!  eBay seems to be doing the same crap to you...and they will not change either!

Just had the same thing happen to me last week! I thought it was really weird that there was no street address on the transaction. In years of selling, I have never had this happen. Luckily buyer left a note with proper address.

It is almost impossible to believe they would not require a street address. What I'd be willing to bet is that there was a bug in the signup process and it dropped the street address. With all of the dozens if not hundreds of known and ongoing bugs with eBay, that seems more likely.

You would be surprised how many people actually don't know how to type and fill in all the fields for an address.  Or they think they filled in all the fields.
You would be surprised how many people don't know their addresses because they never mail or write letters.
I wouldn't be too hard on the buyer w/o an address.  I never ship APO anyway.

mail $100 item to Hong Kong with address provided on eBay generated shipping label. 2 days after I mail the buyer sends message that the address is missing an important line and could I correct it. I told him package in long out of my hands. 2 weeks later he says package is being returned due to the incomplete address and would I re-mail it when it comes back. Oh and by the way - it is over 10 pounds so postage is going to be around $80 - who pays for that a second time?

In case of a problem later, I'd do "report buyer" for invalid mailing address.

@IMustBeCrazy has the best solution.

You can even put something like that in your listing verbiage. ''If address is different  from PayPal receipt or is invalid for shipping purposes - transaction will be cancelled.

You can choose to add that you will hold the item and give them a set time to change what is needed to go forward, then they can re-purchase.   Or just let the transaction cancellation stand.

Ebay encourages thievery on their site because they make money from it. EBay always stands by the buyer at the seller's expense so all of the scams that occur on EBay every day put boatloads of money in EBay's pockets. In fact I think that it has gotten to the point where half of the EBay buyers are  crooks and thieves because EBay has enabled it for so long and sellers are leaving in droves because of EBay's horrific customer service. Logically there is only one reason why someone would order something online and yet not provide their shipping address where their paid-for item can be delivered. EBay is full of crooks and every day they find another way to steal from innocent sellers while EBay sits back and laughs.

@Carol
''report a buyer'' requests end up in the same Ebay inbox as seller complaints about their unfair ''defect system''... that inbox would be the trash...It is a total joke, and I wouldn't waste my time

@ Chicago48, if there are that many people who don't know how to fill in their address (2 lines), or who don't even know their own address, I fear for the future of this entire planet.  Those who cannot do such simple tasks surely need to have a full time caretaker and live in a hospital.  That is ludicrous.  My 92 year old grandma knows her own address and can fill out a form that clearly says "address."  My 5 year old nephew knows his own address and knows how to read "address."  Anyone who cannot do that is clearly disabled and should have a Power of Attorney to do those things for them.

Made a first sale after the eBay/PayPal split....received a notice from eBay..without ANY address or how to have buyer send $$.
Fortunately, I had the buyer's email address(from previous sales)...so sent him note to pay (as usual ) to my PayPal account.
How will future sales be handled? eBay wants me to make shipping labels eta. NEVER had , never will.
What are others doing now?
