Seller Reports eBay to Better Business Bureau over Shipping Fees

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
It pisses me off that eBay can get away with charging a final value fee on shipping. When I complained to the BBB and received an answer from eBay with a resolution, it was suggested that I offer free shipping.

That's fine on small, light weight items. But, when you ship glassware, including shipping would eat up my profits unless I charge a horrendous amount for the item.

I will someone would file a class action law suit regarding this because it infuriates me. At one point, I did not list things on eBay for about 4 years because of that particular reason.

IT'S RIDICULOUS AND NEEDS TO STOP!

Frustrated!
Craig

"[eBay] suggested that I offer free shipping."

@Craig (OP) - I hope you realize that eBay's response was designed to make you shut up. Because "free" shipping is actually shipping included, which means you raised your items' prices to cover shipping. So eBay still gets a fee from your shipping cost; it just appears like they aren't. And unless some government entity forced them to stop the practice, I think eBay will continue to charge that fee ad infinitum.

Good luck with any complaint to the BBB ...

And, don't forget the ugly reality of eBay’s demonstrable, calculated, facilitation of endemic shill bidding fraud on consumers on its auctions marketplace … http://bit.ly/11F2eas

In the past we talked a lot on this site about how there is NO such a thing as Free Shipping.  It is either ''separated'' shipping cost or ''shipping included in price'' for most of us.  Either way, eBay profits - like ihJacksparrow has said.

I think my comeback to eBay's response would have been ''Please give me the name of that shipper that will ship my items for FREE?''

@OP  Don't hold your breathe for a solution from the BBB bureau.

Useless government agency is overestimating the worth of the BBB

The final value on shipping fee is wrong, but the one that really gets me is the forced payment of shipping for a buyer's return. I don't know how they are getting away with that one.

Of course it forced us to end all international sales, so in the end, while we lose some sales, so do eBay.

I have found my sanity and more profit at eCrater.  And not once have I dealt with a low-baller or rude or demanding customer.  And for those of you who can no longer find IT on eBay, I am seeing a lot of IT on eCrater.

I've been very pro eBay over the years and if asked what my biggest gripe is with ebay it's FVF fees on shipping!

It discriminates against my heavy tools!

I've opted out of arbitration for this very reason.

In my eyes eBay owes me thousands of dollars!

Been waiting for years for a class action on this issue.

eBay sellers brought the postage ''fees'' on themselves (and the rest of us, who unlike them were playing fairly).

Back when eBay didn't charge fees on shipping, enough greedy sellers started ''adjusting'' sales and postage prices. EXAMPLE: Instead of listing a $10 item for $10 + $2.50 postage, they listed the item for $1 and the postage charge was going to be $11.50, escaping all fees except on the $1 selling price.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand why eBay changed to charge the same fees on postage in addition to selling price.

Blame greedy sellers trying to sidestep rules for the costs we are ALL now incurring !

Please realize I agree completely with forced postage on returns, and other wrongfully charged penalties.

Scammer buyers are taking advantage of eBay's too generous return system to cheat honest sellers.

I quit selling internationally too, with perhaps an individual item exception or two, possible scammer returns are just too risky for me.

@Tinker Belle - There wouldn't have been a problem regarding fee avoidance if eBay had just taken the time to penalize sellers who were engaged in that practice. Instead of going after those sellers who were violating the rules, they just force every seller, even the honest ones, to be squeezed with additional fees. The cynic in me thinks eBay specifically didn't penalize the fee avoiders so they could rake in more money.

And I'd love to know if eBay had to pay for the mention in Jurassic World. If they did, no matter the cost, they got a great deal for getting their name out to millions.

@iheartjacksparrow,

Brands pay for every exposure, otherwise even an incidental exposure will be blurred out.

I occasionally watch the show "Homicide Hunter" on the CI channel and the featured detective is regularly shown smoking a cigarette although he never appears to do the "draw back". Anyone want to bet that the tobacco companies are not paying to have him "smoke" in these shows?

Regretfully, not even the U.S. criminal code gets in the way of commerce at eBay Inc. …

I actually complained to ebay some years ago, there were a couple of sellers selling a certificate good for one year membership in a fitness center.

They had listed it at $1 and $99 or even $199 shipping, and it was a piece of paper! They had sales too.

Ebay did not end those listings, even though I contacted them multiple times about it.

Hard to understand why the ebay people could not see what was going on.  Too inexperienced,

To me, that is a tax on postage and should be a concern to the feds, plus is really is a restraint on commerce

eBay's not hiding it, they tell you straight up, there is a fee on shipping, the more shipping costs, the more you will pay, there will NEVER be a law suit filed against ebay for this, it may be unethical, and of coarse you don't like, but they are not doing anything illegal,

As mentioned a million times, eBay's ''so called service'' is not mandatory, if you want to use their service, and they say they will charge a fee on the cost of shipping , and you agree, and continue to use their service, you are the fool, not ebay,

ebay has the right, the same as any business to charge a fee on whatever they want, they could charge a fee, every time you login and a fee to logout, they could charge a fee for every single item that is shown on your screen in a search, even a fee to process the fee,  a fee for short duration listings like they already do, a fee for anything, and almost everything, the list of ''creative'' fee's they could charge is absolutely unlimited, it is only LIMITED by eBay's imagination and the fools who Agree to it and pay it, and when you use their service and pay for it, your agreeing to it.

if no one agreed to it, the fee on shipping would disappear very quickly, as would many of their other money grabbing features.

We were once fools, but learned our lessen, we currently don't agree with this, and many of their other so called features, so we don't use their services,

it's going to take many more to disagree, for ANY change to occur, and in the mean time, brace yourself for many more creative ebay fee's to pay to continue to keep using their service,

It would be almost laughable to file a complaint with the BBB, I would almost be certain the people at ebay find it quite a joke to even respond to it, at least they have something else to laugh at, when their not laughing at the fools who agree to it.

I have a big rant against EBAY, which I am transitioning away from as much as possible.  But one thing I notice their competitor AMZ does (as well as some others) is when you LIST your item, it's also listed what the final fee will be.  You don't have to calculate or wait for an invoice and check to see the charges.
There's another site I'm on and they immediately tell you what your revenue will be after shipping and fees.  Not so with Ebay.

Forcing sellers into free shipping and pretty much eliminating combined shipping to save money for smaller items has driven almost everyone out of my category on eBay. Years ago there would be 1,500 to 2,000 auctions in the Casino Slot Card category, tonight there was a grand total of 35 auctions!!! Everyone is moving to Delcampe where there are now over 3,000 auctions running in the same category and the numbers are growing daily.
