eBay and Amazon Should Ban Resellers

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
I agree with Target banning reselling...obviously buyers were buying all they can buy and reselling on eBay, Shop Goodwill, etc.

One solution I have suggested is that first, Target cardholders should be invited to the promotion...I did not even know that they had this.

I also suggested that each customer was allowed to purchase a limit of only 3 items per day.

The promotion was for Target to get customers, existing and new, to their store, not have these buyer sharks resale Lilly Pulitzer for more than 3 times the price they paid.

It is not fair, and I think eBay and other sites should ban buyers to sell promotional items too.

Got up this morning on the wrong side of the bed did ya, or are you just one of those disgruntled resellers that got ban by target???

Either way your suggestion is a pipe dream.  Probably 90 percent of all sellers over all platforms are resellers of one type or another.

Me I buy from a wholesaler to resell. Doesn't make me a bad person just probably a little smarter than the idiot who goes into a store and trys to buy everything in sight and then doesn't have the common sense to KEEP THEIR MOUTHS SHUT and broadcasts to the whole world about how great they are.

Go back to bed.

I don't really consider somebody who buys from a wholesaler to be in the same class as the derp who clears the shelves at Toys R Us on truck day.

Reselling is an ancient-old method of commerce that provides market/pricing equilibrium (supply and demand become much more efficient). In the long run, store-enforced rules never work. Buyers and sellers find ways to work around the rules.

@RKTOYS

And why not??? I'm well known by my wholesale rep. I call and see how many they have available of a certain item and then buy all of it.

I've cleared more than one shelf to their dismay. But then they just refill it again another day.

The only difference between the big mouths clearing the store shelves and me is I have taken the time to reseach my items, get a tax license, get a business license and file a tax return claiming all transactions.

Most of the target shelf clearers are one time wonders who are just trying to pay off the house in one shot. They really have no skin in the game other than the couple of hundred dollars they spent.

anyone that buys anything to resell, is a "reseller" even used items are resellers or is the OP just saying anyone who buys from the people who just banned resellers who just buy sale items. either way pipe dream for sure even if you manufacture items say jewelry you buy with the intent of reselling raw gold bullion to finished gold ring is still considered reselling.

If eBay bans resellers, the site will be a ghost town in 24 hours. Unless you are the manufacturer, you are a reseller. It's all about supply and demand. Id I have something that hundreds to thousands of people want, I'm not going to resell for cost plus shipping. Don't forget that sometimes people spend hours in line to get a limited edition item. If I don't have to drive for miles and miles and stand in line for hours, it's worth it to me to pay more.

Their money is just as green as anyone else's. So what would be the reason for banning? If the store wishes to stop people from clearing the shelves, then they should put a limit on items purchased and/or adjust the prices high enough that resellers would not see any profit. Of course, that may cut into the store's profit.

OP says "It's not fair."

Oh good Lord.  No one has done anything illegal.  People have been reselling for centuries and OP wants it stopped.   LOL

People who sell collectible, estate and garage items are also resellers.

If it weren't for resellers there never would have been an eBay to begin with.

Without eBay to drive us here - would we ever have found this site in which to vent?

Dave & Ina would have had less issues to report on over the years without eBay, the gift that keeps on giving.

Yet, here we all are.

Thanks, re-sellers!

I don't understand?  If you're dealing with a wholesale representative, you did it the right way.  So did I; wholesale account, tax license, the whole nine yards.  To be lumped in with some small time scalper is an insult.

No, you most certainly did, by continuing to insist that everybody is a reseller when the OP is _clearly_ only talking about scalpers.

Target isn't ''banning resellers''. They can try but I doubt it will work. Any business who works to keep people from buying their goods will fail. It's asinine and energy poorly spent. The Target debacle is a very good marketing scheme, I will give them that.

I wonder if the stores are going to create some kind of shared database of "persons known to be or suspected of (gasp) reselling! Like they do for shoplifters. Perhaps legislatures can assist them in creating a registry of resellers. They could share pictures from surveillance cameras and use that facial recognition technology like the casinos do to id card counters and chip palmers. Maybe they'll be required to identify themselves upon entering a retail establishment. Or just require them to wear a big scarlett "R" on their shoulders. Or as we move to a cashless society, their ability to buy and sell can be tightly controlled. Good times for all.

Seriously?

If you want to buy something on a promotion day be there first thing in the morning and buy it!

Don't expect stuff to be lying around on the shelves the next day when you deign to wander in and look around in befuddled confusion wondering why all the good stuff is gone.

Sheesh! Lazy, stupid, whiny, entitled people.

Im not sure what all the complaining is about.

While I dont buy my goods at Target or Kmart, I do from time to time buy some electronics that I resell on eBay from places like FRYs or Bestbuy when they closeout an item or make a price mistake.

They dont care, they dont honor my tax resale but I add it into the price.

As for those who do buy from Target etc ... so what? A sale is a sale is a sale.

If the merchant doesnt like that people buy up items 1) dont run them at that money loosing price, 2) limit quantities 3) dont honor tax resale numbers or any other combination of limiting factors.

These items are usually either sold at a loss or close to their break even point - like Shoprite does when they run 2 liter Cokes for .79. They limit you to 4 and thats it.

I see PLENTY of people who own small grocery stores buying those items. If they can get away with more then 4 - god bless them.

Its like selling goods on eBay with its Theft-tastic returns policy - dont sell it on eBay if you cant afford to loose it.

As for the OPs ridiculous "eBay should ban resellers" ... SERIOUSLY ... who do you think is the "ten poles" for both eBay and Amazon? Is it you with your 3 pairs of used jeans, or a professional seller whos FVFs and listings keep the places going?

Wow,  The term is arbitrage.  Taking from one place and selling in another for a different price.  This is the basis of Market making.  This has happened long before the internet was born.  I think it goes back to Kane and Abel,  Where Kane wanted what Abel had.  Ebay and Amazon are great indicators of what the market will bear. These fads come and go.  They are fads and will end like Beanie Babies.  When I first started selling 501 jeans stores had limits on the amounts we could buy to protect there local customer base, but The ''ARBS'' were major business to these stores.  Lilly Pulitzer, will go by the way of Coldwater creek, Abercrombie and Fitch, and: do you remember when Lucky Jeans were 100.00 each.
So should I not be able to buy a semi load off of Alibaba and piece it out.  The true sense you hit on in your message is that retail bricks and mortar are dinosaurs with this just an indication of the future.
Thank you  Bruce Wendt
