Will Sellers Be Back in Control after eBay and PayPal Split?

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
The new eBay user agreement I received a few days ago says:

Key updates to the eBay User Agreement:
Fees, holds, returns & cancellations, and eBay Money Back Guarantee: Users now authorize eBay to instruct PayPal to make deductions from their PayPal account(s) for fees, returned items, items not as described, return shipping, cancellations (under our new cancellation policy), and eBay Money Back Guarantee reimbursements. eBay will recommend, rather than request, when PayPal can restrict funds in a seller's PayPal account. We clarified language for holding seller funds, placing charges on a seller invoice and/or charging a payment method on file, and removing funds in a buyer's currency.

It seems to me that if eBay sellers just completely stop using PayPal for anything, there will be nothing eBay or anyone else can do about it, and then the sellers would be put back in control.

Sellers already have that choice. You can set up your own payment plan with visa and mastercharge.

You don't have to take paypal as you just have to use a payment service approved by Ebay.

I would guess that less than 1/2 of 1 percent of the sellers use a payment service other than paypal on Ebay.

"Users now authorize eBay to instruct PayPal to make deductions from their PayPal account(s)" - thats via the illegal use of eBays TOS aka shrinkwrap license.

"eBay will recommend, rather than request" SAME BS, different verbage. Its there to placate the lawyers.

"We clarified language for holding seller funds" means in ennglish "We (paypal) got in trouble a few years back when we did it, now that we are SEPERATE (LORD WHO ARE THEY KIDDING?) companies you are now giving US permission to do it to you AGAIN.

Its all lies and a house of cards. The "separation" is %101 BS.

Is there anyone here going to say otherwise?

The separation of eBay and PayPal represents a break between the two companies in name only.

Recent changes to the UA's of both companies as well as the "agreements" between PayPal and eBay with regard to how closely they will work together confirm this.

Essentially, the eBay/PayPal s"split" is little more than technical manipulations which will benefit the billionaires and multi millionaires who hold stock.

Other than making the 1% wealthier than they were before, there is little benefit to be realized that will improve anything for buyers or sellers.

These two companies will continue to conduct business and implement policies for the benefit of their Wall Street Masters with virtually zero regard for the needs of non investor users.

Up-date states: "... fees, returned items, items not as described, return shipping, cancellations (under our new cancellation policy), and eBay Money Back Guarantee reimbursements."

I'd like to know at what point do sellers actually see money from the items they sell? The wording seems to imply that sellers will be doing nothing but giving back the money they are paid.

"Mr Sparrow" (in my best accent impersonation)

NEVER

Amazon just opened ANOTHER fulfillment center, all while eBay is still trying to figure out feedback in 2015 ...

Just hang on, the Summer Seller Stealathon Update is just around the corner .. who knows what evil STILL lurks in eBay heart?

Hello,  I am wondering if the postage I pay eBay through paypal after the split will warrant the 1.5% kick back. at 40k a year in postage I should get an extra 600 from paypal.  Or am I going to get the screws on this?  Thanks  Bruce Wendt

Ebay will revert to whatever method you have set you account up to pay your Ebay fees and/or they will require a credit card that can be charged for returns and the such.  Ebay will not let something this big hang out there.  They will have a solution that best benefits them.

Same Sugar Honey Ice Tea different day.

Opened a spot on eCrater and will be listing there and also Bonanza---can't possibly be any WORSE than ebay.

If my house must be filled with things bought to SELL on ebay ---where they have lied cheated and stolen from me--I will be just as happy to hold them until they get sold elsewhere.

And I will be just as happy to BUY elsewhere---something I wish there was some way of conveying TO ebay.  But as we all know---they don't hear when we do so it is pointless.

I am the OP.

Just watch what happens.

Anyone with half a brain who wants to sell on ebay will just close their paypal account and get a merchant account.  Square, maybe. One of those new players will come in and supplant paypal and put the seller back in control.

It's suicide accepting a payment through paypal that can be reversed for 6 months, when all you have to do is go though any other payment service in the world and cut that down to 60 days.

Paypal is dead.  I said it here today.

@Steevo

You are dislusional if you think a merchant account is going to be any safer than paypal.

I've had chargebacks on credit cards for up to one year old. You will get the same thing on a merchant account.

Besides any merchant account has to be ok'd by Ebay. SQUARETRADE ISN'T ONE OF THEM

Just remember folks, buy where you sell.  If you sell on eCrater or Bonanza please buy there too.

As you have noticed, I'm plugging eCrater every chance I get.  They don't steal from you and they stay out of your business. It's easy to list and be seen in Google shopping.  REMEMBER, register your eCrater store address with all of the search engines.

It is simply unacceptable that eBay take, take and take, make your listings invisible while taking your money, and then ENCOURAGE buyers to return and force sellers to pay their return shipping under any circumstances.

NOTHING is going to change in the relationship between eBay and Paypal, nothing.

eBay already knows that since "all this time" aka legal issues, they were NEVER forced to allow other payment options (Squar etc) its not going to change here either.

Yes you can use your own merchant account, or the few other minor payment methods eBay "allows", but they know full well %98 of the people using eBay WONT, and they can keep things as they are/were.

SERIOUSLY, is there ANYONE here that thought there would be any REAL substantive changes? There wont be on Returns, there isnt on Feedback (they just confirmed they wont be reverting to the old 2 way system) ... why would this be ANY different?

eBay is about CONTROL (thats why JD was hired) and money, NOT ecommerce.

eBay isnt going to just let the Paypal cashcow walk away.

They will hold money, take money, STEAL money as they please. All they will be doing is recommend, rather than request.

Its all BS and its all for the lawyers.

There will be no REAL changes at eBAy anytime soon, unless theres enough bad press to force it OR they get sued in court (unlikely).

You may also consider Stripe payment.
I would recommend eCrater to sell on. I am only starting and learning some of the attributes and such, but now I am also getting a better understanding of what some of the good ''pro-sellers'' use. I have 2 shops. I like being the boss.
Bonanza has a lot of hype, especially about their memberships. Be careful of direct checkout and you don't get your money in 10 days or you get a $30 chargeback but nothing on the merchandise and they can't explain. Closed my shops there.

Why would I open a merchant account when over 90% of my customers want to use Paypal?

I accept what the masses want and right now they want Paypal.

While that sounds easy enough, IF you are selling on Ebay, that isn't so easy UNLESS they will be expanding the payment types we can accept.

You just watch.

When paypal is divested Ebay will have to let other payments be accepted.  They will be unable by antitrust laws to dictate that.

They will not be able to operate in coordination with paypal.  The purpose of the divestiture is to allow more competition not less.

It'll happen.

This message is in the bottom of paypal emails, at least in Calfornia.  I sense a settlement with the government on this. We talked about it here, I talked to the DFI in California on the phone and pointed out that ebay/paypal were violating the law by holding funds more than 10 days. It looks like they took action, finally.
