eBay Makes It Harder to Retrieve Customer Email Addresses

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
Another unannounced eBay change - the Sold page (My eBay: Sold) no longer displays the email address of the buyer, only their name.

You have to go to the Selling Manager Sold page to see the email address.

This is going to play havoc with some of us who capture the email addresses of our customers.

Also, if you click on the edit drop-down menu of the title bar of the Sold page, only header colors and print appear. There used to be a "custom" option which let you set how you see the page.

Thanks for taking a look.
Regards,
Al

We capture the emails from paypal or authorize.net (for credit cards). They never disappear here.

eBay sellers can get a complete report of all their eBay customers in their Pay Pal account tools. It's fast and mineable :)

Like the others posted:  PayPal.

Also, I have found it more likely that the PayPal email address is the one buyers use, while the one on eBay's records may be old and bounce back.

I could have used this info about a week ago when I could not for love nor m,oney FIND a buyers email to alert them I had another item they wanted----

ONe of the FEW buyers I have actually HAD and I was not able to REACH them-at least;  not using THEIR email.

What was that about ebay removing ALL buyer and seller names and emails and if they had THEIR way--we would only get a bar code on the labels?

I "get" that it's irritating to not have it conveniently where you're used to seeing it.........but in response to  "comet".....to say that you missed out on a sale because you had NO WAY to email a client is a bit of a stretch unless you're BRAND NEW to selling or something.
Anyone who's been selling for any amount of time could've figured out easily where to find a contact email from an EXISTING ebay customer.

I can still see the email addresses on my Sold page through the Selling Manager.

So either the change has not caught up to me yet or possibly the OP [or Ebay] change your set up on the page.  Towards the top of your screen on the left is a place you can click on CUSTOMIZE and make sure your selections are as you want them to be.

Also in the email Ebay sends that notifies you of the sold item, that still has the email address in it too.

And of course the other methods that others shared before me.  There are many ways to get the information easily.

Ebay will do anything it can to prevent any sales directly to a customer. While understandable, this is very irritating. I personally have found a few ways to get around this in the eBay email system. I found that by using brackets [] around your phone number or email address will prevent the system from removing this information.

I've been reading this newsletter from the day it was started.  Reading all  the continual complaints about Ebay and the constantly growing problems involved with selling there.  C"MON PEOPLE.  JUST BAIL OUT.  QUIT EBAY.  Quit the bitching and go to one or two other online sites.  There's many to choose from and an influx of new members will support these sites and help them grow.

I guess I'm not too up on technology.  How do I mine the email addresses by using "Paypal account tools" ?

There is nothing wrong with "bitching" about the venue.

The problem is harping on the same thing over and over and over and over.

Apparently this is a new situation. By design or by accident this happened? Who knows - maybe the Shadow knows.

@Marie - you are correct about the Selling Manageer displays. The problem with SM is that for multiple items sold to a buyer, it combines the items under a header and then lists the price as the SUM of all the items. There are no individual selling prices making it difficult to obtain that data - but you can (still) get the e-mail address.

Another little eBay PITA nugget strewn in your path.

@GotToGetOut

My guess on the  "Paypal account tools" is having a payment received statement downloaded in .csv format so you can grab the e-mail address. No doubt it will work, but you have to integrate it programmatically (or manually) into your database.

The caveat is if your buyer pays with (gasp) a cheque/money order/a box of live chicks via the USPS/or other form of non-PayPal transaction.

Yes, and they've eliminated showing the buyer's zip code
on the sold page as well.  If these changes haven't happened to the sold pages of some others yet, they probably will.  I have multiple accounts, and it's been happening to them one by one over the past week.

I reported this two weeks ago and nothing has changed. They said it was a problem and they were turning over to the programmers. Also you can not see date listed or customize your pages AT ALL. Two of my accounts have this problem an two do not. There help literature says you can customize and tells you how. But how can you when the custom button is gone. This is for sold unsold and current listings.

I would put more faith in the accuracy (or up-to-dateness) of the PayPal email address anyway. That comes to me in the payment notification in email, and also comes up as the Reply-To address if you hit Reply on your payment notification.

As regarding contacting the buyer through eBay, you can always send them a message through their eBay account, even though their offsite email address may not be visible.

I like that suggestion about evading message filters by putting your address or phone within square brackets; I'll have to try that sometime. :-) One other possible strategy (which I have not tested thoroughly, so it's just a theory right now): the filters seem highly attuned to catching you using your own eBay email contact address in messages, but do not seem to detect, or care about, you passing through a different email address that's not associated with your eBay account. I've been able to give buyers a Gmail address of mine without problems, but I've gotten slapped once or twice for trying to send the Hotmail address of my eBay account the same way.

I agree with the sentiment expressed by several in here - at some point one has to ask why anyone does business where there are so many issues, lack of trust, and zero transparency.

At some level, you have to view the continued loyalty to eBay more akin to enabling the problem rather than finding a solution on another platform.

eBay initially was built on openness, and access to all customer information. eBay would never have grown to the level it is today if "bypassing the system" to direct sales was a real issue given open access to the customer information over the years.

Throttling "access" seems to have been an eBay mission these past few years - one has to ask if the impact on public relations warrants the agenda?

eBay tested a new Item Sold page during the month of March. It included a larger photo of the item sold and a list for ''what to do next'' ''How to get paid''.

It was not a total bad change. It was much cleaner and had larger graphics and type. EXCEPT, with eBay there is ALWAYS an except, they listed ONLY the buyers email and NO OTHER INFO to use to identify or crosscheck the purchase. So you had to match up your payments by checking the eBay email address with the Pay Pal email address (as we know, MANY are not the same across both platforms). It definitely increased to degree of difficulty in double-checking your payments.

They have now gone back to the previous display and are probably evaluating whether to go to that new system or stay as is. Let's hope if they do change, they will at least, put the buyers name on the new style page.

The buyer's email address is on the payment information that one receives from Paypal.  Every payment I receive I print it out so I have a hard copy record of every transaction.  The buyer's email is in the very 1st line of that transaction slip - can't miss it - it's in bold and in color.

I just checked mine, and it shows the e-mails for sales back to March but does not show e-mails on any sales from February and earlier. So I would say this is a time issue.

I so so much agree with everyone here E**y is no longer a viable venue and yet so many sellers are die hard rather than try or support new venues there are others out there, of curse the sales are slower. but so is the stress and return rate!! and you are allowed to contact your buyers freely and there are no defect rates sellers who offer great service are not defective the venue is over engineered
