What Do You Do about Lying Buyers on eBay?

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

Dear Editor,
I've been a seller on eBay since 2012 with over 1700 sales. I too believe that eBay will side with the buyer on all complaints and furthermore, ANYONE can leave negative feedback regardless of the situation.

My company will give refunds for any reason. We had 4 negative feedbacks this past year.

1- WW2 Navy recruiting poster - claimed it's a reproduction. The item is genuine and we offered a refund anyway. The buyer chose to keep poster and gave negative feedback. eBay won't remove.

2 - Mourning Locket - Customer disappointed it had "someone else's" hair in it and glass was cracked. These were fully disclosed in the listing. We offered a refund. Buyer choose to keep locket and gave negative feedback.

3 - Gold bangle - buyer claims it was damaged. They returned item DAMAGED. We gave refund anyway. Buyer left negative feedback.

4 - 14K Yellow Gold & Amethyst Tennis Bracelet. Buyer inquired, AFTER winning the bid, if asked if the stones were genuine. We stated that we didn't know, buyer wanted us to ship bracelet so he can have his jeweler examine and wanted to return afterwards. As we never claimed them to be genuine, we returned his money instead of selling. He gave negative feedback that we reneged on an offer.

When we called eBay regarding these negative feed backs they said to us: "they always side with buyers OPINIONS". So they don't care about the facts, only opinions.

Today they are holding $1200 until 3 days after the winning buyer receives the items. I asked eBay for interest on MY money they are holding. Daniel, a manager, said: "he's the final word - they won't give interest".

He also claimed the reason for holding our money is because "other" sellers have ripped off buyers. eBay wants to punish me for what OTHER sellers have done?

I've been in business since 1978. We are honest and forthright. We have an excellent reputation and treat our customers as I personally would like to be treated. If eBay is going to print frivolous negative feedback, I believe they have a responsibility to check the facts and only print what is factual. eBay has also "lowered" our rating in the past due to the USPS losing a package or having it delayed in delivery by weeks, something that is totally out of our control.

We had an oversea buyer return a guitar claiming it arrived damaged. eBay returned the money BEFORE the guitar was returned and when we received it, it was stripped of all the pick-ups, strings, machine head and bridge (COMPLETELY STRIPPED).

Even though we showed pictures, we had to fight with eBay and spend money for an "expert" opinion of the value of the guitar now in this condition. How ridiculous.

If a seller offers money back regardless of the reason, what more could ANY buyer ever ask from the seller? If eBay wants to hold my money, I should get interest. If eBay is going print something negative about my company, it should be factual.

eBay shirks their responsibility's and treats their sellers unfairly.
Robert

It sucks but it happens.  We have 6 negs in the past 12 months, more than we've ever had.

The one that pissed me off the most was a pair of gloves w/a faux fur lining.  The title said faux fur lining.  The description stated it was faux fur lining.  Customer left a neg stating, "Misleading, fake fur not real. More than twice cost of exact product."  So, what, you threw in a price complaint b/c YOU made the mistake of paying twice as much for a supposed identical item?

We've had one as well like the 4th example, didn't ship a sale that was paid for (similar reason) but refunded the money.  While WE may understand why we refunded, in that instance, I can empathize with the buyer.  They are disappointed they aren't receiving something they paid for.  It happens.

Idiot customers are just a cost of doing business.  You just can't control it when it's not your website.

It all sounds like defamation of character. Like being slandered in public with no proof of the facts. How is eBay sheltered from the law?

The truth be known, demonstrably, eBay only makes any effort to look after unscrupulous sellers, particularly those that are providing lots of FVFs, real or faux, and are equally as unscrupulous as eBay ... http://bit.ly/11F2eas

The eBay executive suite—where the incompetent mingle with the disingenuous, the malevolent and the outright criminal, and the just plain stupid ...

Not a whole lot you can do about it since Fleecebay burps, coddles and changes the sellers diapers daily.

We just...

Pay....Block the Lair...And move on.

It isn't worth losing sleep over something that you can't do anything about on Fleecebay.

Fleecebay doesn't have that nickname for no reason.

@Robert (letter writer) - I have to ask: Why you are still selling on eBay when you have had experiences like the ones you describe? For what you pay in fees you could be building your own web site and advertising that site. You wouldn't be punished for eBay's insane anti-seller policies, and you wouldn't be unfairly punished with negatives and defects, nor would you be threatened by buyers.

What do you do about it?

Nothing, there isnt anything you can do.

Not only does eBay NOT care what happens to sellers - it actively encourages it.

eBay knows you wont be taking them to court any time soon, so they are not afraid. They are brazen in their theft, and will tell you as that eBay employee did "too bad, theres nothing you can do about it."

eBay (and this has been said 1000x times) views buyers as their customers, NOT sellers. Sellers are not just canon fodder or even play toys for ebay employees, they simply a resource to steal from. They are a conduit to channel money from and through, to eBays bank. PERIOD.

In days long ago, sellers may have been partners with eBay, and eBay encouraged their growth. Now its only fee increases and mean spirited, quasi illegal moves meant to enhance their bank accounts.

I had a fight with them about a return when the customer emailed me (in eBays system) saying he took the item apart to see "the frayed wires" (what does that even mean?), or how about the lady that opened and tried to use her cell phone on a network it wasnt designed for, and then demanded a return since it was OBVIOUSLY defective.

All of us have stories about eBay, its not uncommon its "de regur" on eBay. eBay keeos the VFVs unless you look carefully at your statement, makes money both ways on shipping and those are the 2 easy things that anyone can see.

eBay is vampiric. Sellers are the fat cows in the valley belowe just waiting ....... When the vampire at eBay get hungry, they swoop down for a bite.

Unless you are a Platinum that they love, or a major brand - you WILL get bitten.

Theres no secret that JD and Obama are friends. It simply means that his Dept of Justice will NEVER look into eBays lies or their illegal activities, and they know it.

Selling on eBay is a crap shoot. Do it if you can afford to is the best advise that most here will tell you.

eBay will NEVER get in between a customer hungry for a return and a seller.

Me? I'm here (after being here since 1998) dodging the slow sales and the high returns until I cant handle it anymore.

11main, Sears, Rakouten are simply not enough to offset leaving eBay.

Sorry that eBay is treating you badly, but in that instance, you arent "special", they do it to us all.

I've already stopped buying on eBay, I've spread out to other platforms and I tell everyone who will listen to RUN from eBay as fast as possible.

3 people whom I do business with ($20 million + companies) have already told me of their downsizing on eBay due to abusive treatment and how they would like to totally leave eBay right after holiday 2015 - its just all too much.

You are much more generous with the liar buyers than we are.  If we are going to receive negative feedback for a train wreck transaction, we will require that the buyer ship the item back.

As a seller of computer parts we have frequent issues with buyers who purchase items that are not compatible with their operating system.

Surprisingly, eBay does not have OS compatibility as a item specific.

We clearly state operating system compatibility in our listing description.  When a buyer contacts us saying their item does not work, the first question we ask them in an eBay message is what operating system they are running.

In most cases, it becomes apparent that the buyer did not read the listing description, and we apologize to them that they did not read that information clearly stated in our listing.

From that point on we contact the buyer directly instead of through eBay messages and respond that we will accept the item back as a return subject to the return policy in our listings which states that buyers pay return shipping.

This process has been working rather well for us thus far as we have yet to come across a buyer who leaves negative feedback although a couple have left low scores which lead to a defect for something they have admitted is their fault.

We are fortunate that so far we continue to have 100% feedback, our defect rating is around 0.50%, and we have maintained our Top Rated Seller status and discount with out interruption since we first qualified.

They basically side with the buyer as it costs them nothing, and you don't have anywhere else to go.

Buyers are worse than they have ever been. A negative a month at the very least, a dispute every few days over stuff you clearly put in the listing...

It is a hotbed of thieves and liars, and that's just eBay! They are facilitating the fraud, it's quite amazing.

One of the reasons we stopped selling on Ebay were the increasing number of partial refund buyers.

I have  resorted to putting a "blurb" on my listings that USED means--USED=-=and as such  might show signs of wear etc.  Because it was----USED.  By---some one.  To do---something.

I suspect however that NO ONE is actually READING any part of my listings--they see the brand and (maybe!) the size and say OH I WANT A KATE SPADE ITEM!   Or --OH!  A pair of SOREL BOOTS in my SIZE!  and hit the BUY button--not paying ANY attention to the OTHER words in the TITLE===like==USED.

Then they feel perfectly justified in slamming ME because--an item was---USED.

One woman got absolutely HYSTERICAL because a very vintage (20's) Sterling necklace was "Only" marked on the CLASP--and not on every link! On this item the clasp was designed as part of the items design--not some generic piece to connect the two parts of the chain.  So--this was--bogus.  Did ebay give a rat's patootie?  Nopers!

And very recently I had  a package  circle the drain of some Chicago-land area USPS Sort Center--for a MONTH. The buyer filed a report;  I filed a report;  I spent HOURS on the phone --almost as bad as eBay!!!---with the PO and the Consumer Affairs division of the USPS---finally the package was shaken loose and delivered.  The BUYER is NOT happy--which I can't blame her for---and now is MAD that the item turned out to be--USED.  As advertised---but--nope. Mad because of a USPS delay? Find some thing to nit-pick the SELLER over!

AND I got a LETTER!!!!!   From the USPS Consumer Affairs Dept on this---Claiming that the SNOW has bogged down the mail and it is all scattered about the place and what did I EXPECT I sent an item not by EXPRESS ---Yeah sure--customers are going to pay for EXPRESS shipping on==used---boots?  Jackets?.  And the mail was delayed for a MONTH???

Lemme tell you I live in one of the snowier places in the USA and OUR mail was working just FINE--all of MY bills showed up! All of MY packages showed up-!  But--nope==this is their EXCUSE--and we have to suck it up and take the hate from our buyers.

You notice that ebay --who is hand-in-glove WITH the USPS --has NOT posted anything about how there are warehouses FULL of USPS mail --just--waiting--to be delivered.  Someday.

Maybe.

We used to sell ages ago on ebay, now we buy there.
Let me tell you as a buyer its very frustrating too.
A dishonest seller used an etsy seller's image for the same product (a vintage sewing pattern). Unknown to us we had bid on it, didn't win it. About a week later we received a 2nd chance and we purchased it.
It took 3 weeks to receive it, the seller stated it 'took for ever to receive our payment' Really? It was paypal instant payment, paid the same day. Hmm okay not that much of a concern.
However when we  received item, it was vinyl coated and taped (with yucky hair stuck in several areas on the envelope! ) chewed up tissue pattern pieces missing chunks. This was NOT the pattern condition that was in the image!! After a bit of detective work found that pattern on etsy & the image-was much better condition. Bait & Switch?

After contacting the ebay seller, it took a 2nd e-mail five days later to get her attention-will do a chargeback to paypal- that prompted her to finally write back. With 3 consecutive e-mails each nastier than the previous one. She refused to accept it back & totally denied using the etsy image! (the pattern was taken with unique floral fabric background & same creases etc no question that she used someone else's image which displayed the pattern in wonderful clean condition) .
Frustrated I spent over 20 mins on the phone to ebay. I am to send it back before I receive a refund.
So as a buyer, I am forced to go through hoops too (thankfully  its my very first nasty experience out 1000's of purchases, but still very ugly experience. Over the years we had a few problems with some sellers but it was resolved through paypal or by the seller ). Also ebay's button to ask for ebay to step in, wasn't working'internal error' for 2 days thus the last resort of phoning ebay.
So my question to you is why is it I keep reading here that customers get their refunds without the bother of packaging & mailing the item back, as I am forced, in a clear bait and switch situation?
Totally frustrated!

When eB stopped letting sellers leave negatives for buyers, they opened the door to the scam artists out there and now this is the result.  Simple fix to bring back this feature.  A big auction house told me there is a list of bad buyers they all subscribe to and their bids are blocked. I have been fortunate to avoid all but a few of these scam artists but I always immediately call eBay and report them as well.  I expect there are huge numbers of people asking for refunds that eB could ferret out very easily but sellers now can't.

The reason most people stay on ebay is they are to lazy to create their own place online. Or learn a new website. Plain and simple. They rather bich and moan about how bad ebay is. WHY? Because its EASY.

Example im using another website for 7 years now. The only draw back is if you want to use pp. You have to create the pp code at pp and copy and paste it to the site. It takes an addtl. 20 seconds of your listing. Yet lazy people wont do it because epig taught everyone how to be lazy.

At one point i had 2500 pp buttons. I only now have 1125 itens because finding stuff is hard these days. Buy when pp went to 180 day gaurentee. I removed EVERY SINGLE pp button. I only take cash, checks or money orders now. Life is ever changing adapt to the changes or fall behind

@ Terri.
Stop selling on ebay!
Unfortunately, ebay is my bread and butter.  I sell on 7 different venues - ebay, addoway, bonanza - shopify - my own website and etsy  and ecrater.  None of these ALL PUT TOGETHER equal the sales that I have on ebay.  So, do I give up ebay and leave my items sit on a shelf to collect dust or do I continue to do sales on ebay.  Unfortunately all these people that tell you to leave ebay do not pay your bills nor will they send you money to pay them.  We all have obligations to meet.  I even have someone writing the content on website and still don't have the sales I have on ebay.  So, with that being said, I HAVE to stay with ebay whether I like it or not.  This site helps pay my bills.

''The reason most people stay on ebay is they are to lazy to create their own place online. Or learn a new website.''

This is not why I stay on ebay. I am not lazy, I simply don't have the time (work at an auction house in addition to ebay, etsy, and Bonanza and attend several auctions weekly - very time-consuming) to develop a website and generate traffic for said site and also be able to pay my bills while doing so. It takes forever to generate the traffic I would need to sustain myself.

I need the money NOW. Ebay has the traffic I need. Time-Warner et al could give a rat's *ss where my money is coming from and if I am happy with my ''employer''.
