Is eBay Wrong to Take Credit for Postage Discounts?

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
Just noticed something and haven't heard anything from you or your readers. When I sell something on eBay and I go to print a label, the box that tells me the price claims to give me an "Ebay" shipping discount. When in fact it's not eBay's discount at all.

If you go to the regular USPS site and fill in the same info the USPS gives you the exact same price, because you are buying on line.

What big fat lairs they are. Making sellers think "they" are giving you the seller something??

I wish we could call eBay on this and see what they say/do!
S.

extending this discussion to UPS - ebay does give a discounted rate for UPS. It is cheaper than what you would pay at a UPS store or even if you opened a newbie UPS online account. But the discounts for the shipping volume belong to eBay, not you. If you want to build up your website sales and eventually become independent of ebay, the earlier you move off ebay shipping, the better. This build up the shipping history on your UPS account, not ebay's UPS account. As your volume grows, your UPS discounts get better.

Check out international shipping prices on Amazon...higher than eBay.  You cannot tell me that Amazon hasn't negotiated the same price break as eBay...yet at least eBay has the decency to pass along the savings to the end user- if they want to take credit, let them- as long as the money is in my pocket, what do I care?

I have lots of issues with eBay, but claiming they are giving postage discounts is not one of them. I get a discount using PayPal to print labels, and I don't have to pay a monthly fee. So it's all good. Letter writer "S." needs to channel her anger toward matters that are hurting sellers, such as hiding listings and the stupid defects.

@papergoy

Using the words decency and Ebay in the same sentence is funny.

What Ebay does is for their own greed not decency.

Depends if you look at the base price or the available deeper discounts. I pay $14.85 for domestic Priority Mail Express Flat Rate Envelopes with the TRS discount, that's $5.14 less than USPS retail rates and I use that a lot. Do the math...

I purposely go to the USPS site to print our postage.  It always works. eBay don't half the time.  Discount is the same

discount depends on the volume...I ship 800-1,500 packages a week, and ebay is by far my cheapest source (at least on priority mail, as stamps, usps, ebay, paypal all have same first class rates for me). eBay gives TRS commercial plus discounts which exceeds commercial discounts slightly on priority and express mail. NO it is not an eBay discount, BUT eBay gets it due to their volume negotiated. So, yes many sellers may not have the volume or TRS status or even use priority, so it may not matter but for me it is cheape as stamps.com and usps.com click n ship (or click and ship for business) was not giving me the extra discounts. Plus stamps.com charges, which I just don't like.

Thank you for this update, good to know as I never checked! With eBay's history I am not surprised.
You would think with ALL of their bad business practices...to put it lightly; they would have to eventually take some responsibility. I have lost any hope they will though.

A trifle OT but Post Office related---

I had a package shipped to INDIANA that apparently has been sitting somewhere--maybe in WI--since 25 FEBRUARY.  The buyer has not received it and she filed a HELP FORM with the USPS about a week ago.  Today I noticed that this STILL has not moved.  (It allegedly left the SORT center--and--vanished!)

After waiting 50 MINUTES on HOLD with USPS--since you cannot navigate thru their absurd system and just get a HUMAN---I finally got some OFF SHORE CSR who told me=--OH too bad so sad I will file--something--for you and NO I cannot SEE whether or not the USPS has contacted the buyer!  And maybe the USPS will CALL ME in--24 to 72 HOURS.  Maybe.

And---You can call this number to ESCALATE this--but the number is NOT A WORKING NUMBER.  And if I want FURTHER help?

I was told to CALL MY CONGRESS MAN.

Yep.  That's JUST what we elected these people FOR--to find our MIA mail. To get the PO to DO their damn JOBS.

I am usually some what simpatico with the USPS=-=but NOT this time.  I now will have to start all over tomorrow---and I might have to refund $50 to the buyer as she has not gotten her item.  It's NOT my fault--and it certainly is not HER fault---it just---vanished.   Ebay of course will blame ME for opting to not charge the buyer far more for shipment than the item merited--to use UPS or FEDEX would have cost the earth. And it seems that the PO kiosk that we used decided to do STANDARD MAIL vs PRIORITY--which no one noticed til today. That part is "My bad" I guess--but--again---how much are buyers willing to PAY to get a pair of used snow boots anyways?

Can't wait to hear what my anti-government Congress person will have to say should I actually CALL her office on this---

Dear Comet, This has happened twice to me however, I was told that some times they accidentally send the package on the wrong route. They need to check the route the package took. I call my customers home town post office and ask them to check the route with the tracking number I have and sure enough they discover it is sitting at the wrong post office in a nearby town. I would explain what happened re priority verses standard. Both times this worked and the customer got their pkg. Hope this helps; if not perhaps it will help someone else.

I'm happy to use endicia and pay their yearly fee. I have the ability to see the details on every package I have shipped since around 2006 which means when a name looks familiar I can check and see how many times I have orders from them and send them a more personalized shipping message. Also when I joined when no one else would let me print first class mail or have stealth shipping. I stay faithful to god companies that provide me with what I need with no trouble.

@ edGadfly >Use Free Shipping and it does not cost anything.< How do you get postage for free? Last time I heard of someone getting free postage for 'free' shipping, he was dumping his packages with his dad who worked at the PO. Not sure if dad was paying postage to subsidize his grown son or embezzling the postage, but either way it was crazy this guy constantly trying to recommend that we all give free shipping as well since it was well, 'free'. Someone pays somewhere.

I prefer getting my discounts from a site that has only given me trouble one day out of the last 9+ years. I've heard of ebay having lots of problems just over the last year alone. I wouldn't use it as I don't want ebay to have anything to do with my business period.

RE package sitting some place. You can go into usps website, track, put in the number, then if you look there you can ask them to email you and your buyer every time the package is scanned..sure enough all packages with that request show up within a day or two.. just an FYI.. yes ebay cheats and they tell the buyers we are getting big discounts too.

papergoy says "..yet at least eBay has the decency to pass along the savings to the end user-"

How do you know what discount eBay got? You don't really think for one minute that eBay is giving the total discount that they got to sellers do you?  eBay takes a cut of sellers' shipping charges, so what makes you think that they wouldn't take some of the negotiated USPS price for themselves too?  Decency is not a word that I would ever use to describe eBay.

Did you even read my comment- you cannot tell me Amazon doesn't get the same discounts (at least) and yet doesn't pass ANY of the discount along..so what does that make Amazon, and why do they get a pass on this site?  Their gouging is more egregious than eBay's alleged gouging, no?
