eBay Displays Trending Price Data to Detriment of Sellers

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
A disturbing discovery - Trending Price on Active AND Sold Listings.

As I was reviewing my book inventory today to determine what to keep active and what to pull to donate, I came across "Trending Price" (average price) on active AND sold listings for several books. Is this something new? Is it happening only in the book category?

My concern is two-fold. First, when "Trending Price" is shown in an active listing, I feel it gives that particular seller an advantage over other sellers' listings. In other words, eBay is flagging this seller as having the better price (their price seem to always less than trending). In turn, the "Trending Price" makes any seller listing the book (or other item) at a higher price as being over-priced.

When "Trending Price" shows up in the "sold" items, again it could make it difficult for a seller to price their book (etc.) at a higher price (savvy buyers may check sold listings) even if they are the only seller with that book (item).

What is up with "Trending Price?" I contacted a seller who had "Trending Price and $ Amount" on her listing and she replied, "I thought that Trending Amount that shows up only was there when you list the item to give you, the seller, a price guide. I do not believe that I ever saw that when purchasing. EBay posts the trending amount."

Note: Both buyers AND sellers can see this "Trending Price" - I signed out of my account and checked it both ways (in and out of seller account) and I still could see the "Trending Price."

How long has this been going on? So far, every seller with "TP" has been a HUGE seller thousands of listed and sold items.

Thank you,
Vickie

I love it as a buyer... At least when I scalped by a seller I can see it coming. As a seller its nice to have the lowest price.

I would guess if it bothers you then maybe you should reconsider the price you are charging to be more competitive.

The info is always available to buyers who know how to search. I haven't seen this but it sure sounds like something a seller should be able to opt out of if desired.

What's worse is the trending price is not even close to accurate to true avg selling prices of an item based on many variable conditions.
Those who want to see this in true DATA, use terapeak, hammertap or bidvoy and you will see the real item's trending price.

ibuyers has something -

I've noticed when eBay tries to ''Help'' with suggestions in a niche I am familiar with - they are usually inaccurate.  When listing, ''Suggested'' prices have been wildly off in the past.

Appearing math and logic challenged, they continually suggest I upgrade my store - while actual sales suggest  ''closure'' would be more prudent.

Also, does  the ''trending price'' depend on whether shipping is included or separated.  It also might be a ruse to keep buyers on the site longer to look for that ''race to the bottom'' price.

eBay has simply renamed the average selling price display which was a disaster for sellers a couple of years ago and rolled it out once again.

eBay is notorious for driving a race to the bottom on pricing, then wonders why they it is so impossible for them to grow their sales volume - go figure.

I guess the genius MBA's are so determined to fail that they resurrect flawed and failed ideas then rename them only to perpetuate their failures.

The odd supercilious comment on this letter, like "change your price and list it cheaper"or similar, isn't to be frank, helpful! The selling of any collectable, especially is a art and NOT a science. The prices one pays, is different, the condition, the edition. So it IS unfair to compare like for like and expect them to be the same price. Plain daft!

Only on ebay an original Picasso would be devalued to the price of a print or poster. Obviously an original Picasso wouldn't be on ebay. I knew years ago ebay's ''help'' was beyond flawed when they thought a 18th century wafer iron was the same as a wafer cookie. With ebay's logic I should be able to buy a Ferrari at the same price as an AMT model kit.

Amen Basset.

eBay do not dictate our pricing. Buyers do not dictate our pricing. We dictate our pricing, and our pricing is still cheaper than what one can buy the items at retail.  We are not in the give-away business, we are  not Let's Make a Deal, we are in the ecommerce retail business.  If a customer doesn't like our pricing we are just fine with it.  Someone will come along who appreciates good customer service and a quality product, and when they do buy we will likely have less problems with them than we would with the customer who always wants the lowest price.

@saskita
You're mistaken, those prices are so off.....you think you might be getting a "deal" at $50 because the "trending" price ebay tells you says $100, if you did your dd, you could check completeds and see that the item didn't sell previously for over $20
This has happened to me several times in the past month.
@ibuyers
I think Terapeak, Hammertap and others have become irrelevant with all the variables in a listing.  It's best to ck completeds. They bunch in lots with a single item price.  Unless it's a very specific item, those services are useless.

Wenig: "we will court buyers with more time than money" = "we will drive the prices on Ebay lower by showing trending prices" It is going to get worse folks! Many people have a very small profit margin and this may put them out of business.

In the last month or so, someone posted about right clicking on the Print button to see the actual completed sold price on best offers. Ebay of course put an end to this and changed it to a Report Item button. Ebay can't allow an actual sold price to conflict with their manipulated trending price.

There must be a new class of MBAs that came to eBay. Perhaps they are trying out marketing ideas without thinking about the damage they are causing. The trending price just drives prices lower or makes buyers think they are overpaying. I wish eBay would higher some sellers to help direct what they are doing and prevent killing us off.

The management at eBay really must be math challenged as Basset stated.  Can you imagine walking into Walmart, Macy's, Sears, Nordstrom or any other major retailer and seeing a sign in front of any product that they sell that reads "this is not the best price for this product".

eBay leaders love smart phones, data, and social media buzz words like "trending".  Too bad they don't have common sense.

Just an example of trending price being BS.  I was considering listing a 1st/1st trade Grisham ''A Time to Kill''.  Ebay helps me by telling me the trending price is $35.  Um, no.

And I don't get why a site that makes $ off commission is constantly trying to drive item closing prices lower.

GOOD THING ebay doesn't run a 7-11.

They would have all the CHEAPEST items UP FRONT, with the high-margin items hidden away on a dark low shelf.

GENIUSES over there at ebay.

It has been going on for well over a year, but not site wide.  I think they are bringing it online for more and more sellers as time goes on.  As a seller I really dislike it and it isn't always accurate either.

To me this feature makes no sense on a site like Ebay.

Okay well there is ONE good discovery.

Thanks to the 12 year olds who want a button to do EVERYTHING FOR THEM......

If you see a notice on your dashboard to "update prices" top raise your best match....

TADA!!

You  only need change it by ONE PENNY to fix them. Even if it only raises you for a DAY,imagine what a jump in sales.

I TRIED IT and it worked for me. Got out of our slump, and we are back on track for a half million dollar year. If need be, also change the pics to the second pic.

BEST MATCH doesn't care if you are the highest price, really. That is only ONE factor in their criteria. If you change ONE thing, it goes up for a day or two.

It counts a bunch of stuff, and I don't think price is rated on top of the metrics.

We cannot stop buyers from sorting, but we can still get on top if we are working hard, and outfox thew fox.

TRY IT and see.

If you are paying for store fees, listing fees, Paypal fees and eBay fees, why would eBay feel it necessary to advertise competitor listing on your listing.  eBay is picking your pocket and stealing your thunder.
