High Anxiety over eBay Tracking and Defects

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
I have a huge pet peeve about eBay that has been going on for some time. They do NOT recognize that an Insured package is tracked - and the tracking number from the receipt is never recognized by eBay, and you get a warning from eBay when you enter it that it is NOT a tracking number. The Post Office TOLD me that, YES, it IS a tracking number!

This has been going on forever. eBay CSRs will not listen. (As usual...) Any thoughts? Have you had this complaint before?

It's making me crazy - since I live in a state of high anxiety with eBay anyway, always under threat of getting dinged.

Getting eBay to listing to something they do not want to hear or accept is not going to happen.

eBay is famous for claiming that the incorrect displays of shipping time frames are mandated by their working arrangement with USPS and that eBay has no control over the inaccurate displays.

It would appear eBay is selectively deciding which mandates from USPS they are going to oblige, and which ones they choose to flat out ignore.

You could try this:

Contact customer service at the US Postal Service and confirm that the insured package tracking number is the same as a standard tracking number.

Then, explain the issue that eBay is refusing to accept the USPS Insured Package tracking numbers you provide and that eBay is telling you these numbers are not valid tracking numbers.

Tell USPS that you have spoken to eBay customer service several times and they refuse to accept the insured tracking number as a tracking number.

Request that USPS contacts eBay to explain the simple truth to them and compel eBay to accept those tracking numbers.

Sometimes, you have to apply pressure to the other end of the lever to achieve success, and in this case USPS seems to be the place to start.

Here's something I read that offered a work-around for this issue.  Don't know if this work-around still works or not.

Unfortunately insurance label number is not a tracking number as far as the PO is concerned pure and simple. Tracking is free if you do it online. You can also download the USPS click-n-ship where you can print a label without having to pay for postage, to get free tracking, until you either use your own postage or go to the PO to pay for the postage.
It is simple and it is easy

OP

Have you tried entering it through PP instead.  It will update Ebay.  Maybe this is a way around it.  I don't know as I haven't ran into this problem.  If you try it, please share with us if it worked.

I agree with the writer. I share the frustration. I provide free shipping and insure over $250 (it  might be the only thing that saved my sales at eBay)--and to eBay, it counts for nothing. It is arbitrary to exclude a USPS numbered receipt. They just don't know how to do it.

The whole "tracking number" evolution is a nuisance. A tracking number should be relevant in 2 weeks if an item has not arrived. People who want to follow their item's every move.... who has the time?? People who have nothing better to do.

I have had this problem in the past, but not recently. I thought eBay got it straightened out. I questioned the people at my Post Office, and indeed, the insurance number IS the tracking number, pure and simple, without any doubt. I explained the problem to them a few times, and they insisted that the insurance number IS the tracking number. The fact that eBay does not recognize it is deplorable. The Post Office is NOT going to change their system to accommodate eBay. So that leaves the seller in the middle without any help from eBay. Come on eBay, please get this straightened out for good. It is wrong for you not to make the changes necessary to protect your sellers.

"eBay has no control over the inaccurate displays"
Oh but they do!
Just this month my wife told me that ebay was displaying shipping times and not recognizing Presidents day as a postal holiday. The USPS was recognizing it on USPS.com and delivery times reflected president's day but on ebay it did not. Does ebay really want its users to believe that it is the postal service who is making these constant mistakes done on purpose.
I would suggest that you contact your local postmaster and write a letter to the postmaster general.
This is typical ebay not working with a seller, not telling the truth, and not doing the right thing and fixing that for you and fixing it on the site but I do not believe they have an employee capable of admitting there is a error made by ebay or having a programmer capable of fixing it.
On the ebay app ebay has resorted to telling buyers their item will ship in 5 days instead of telling the buyers it is 5 business days as the seller has stated. My point is this ebay messes with the shipping estimates an tracking all the time, if they say they are not they are complete liars.
Get your items listed elsewhere as right now top priority on ebay is manipulation of the price of ebay stock, and paying stock market bloggers to spin their poison.

This is so frustrating to read. I have to say the stress of selling on ebay full time is just not worth it anymore. Just yesterday had someone drive into the door of my car at fedex as I was racing to get some stupid package out. I could have have waited until today, but I try not to let the scan wait for fear of a defect or who knows what. While the accident certainly isn't the fault of ebay, the stress of getting a package where it needs to be ever more quickly is becoming overwhelming. Sellers can't trust that a holiday is a holiday, can't be down with an illness, nothing. Not even a little bit. Add to the ebay BS that we need to work around and it becomes an obsession. I have learned A LOT reading the comments on this site over the last several months. Most notably that so much is beyond my control and the upside of my ebay business is limited at best. It's time to make a change.

I don't seem to have this problem--I DO get the WARNING when I enter the Insured Package Number BUT it always accepts it after I type in USPS in the carrier box;  and it is able to be tracked using both ebay's system and the USPS system.

That said I do not use the on-line purchase of postage via ebay or anywhere else. So I am typing in from a printed receipt.

I have discussed this with the PO and they are not about to issue a DIFFERENT receipt for Delivery Confirmation when they have JUST sold you an Insured service that THEY will track and that is fully functional==and yes they ARE aware that ebay refuses to make these a standard part of their system.  Ditto Customs Forms.

I just used this last week and the package tracked fine.  From NY to Ca.

Now if you want to chat about the Springfield MA PO Sort center that managed to MELT a first class bubble envelope and destroy the plastic contents---well then I am your gurl!

Comet:

Ditto on that Springfield sort facility! Actually, I am still missing several packages that were diverted to Boston as well. Of course, when it comes time to broach the subject with eBay on the defects inflicted, the free merchandise given and lack of scanning by the postman, it is still a thorn in my crawl. High anxiety is an understatement, Cymbalta is the only med that was specifically designed for the eBay seller.

Why, oh why, would anyone selling on Ebay, go to the post office to purchase shipping labels? Ebay offers discounted shipping labels, as I am certain everyone is aware. You can add signature confirmation and/or insurance. A valid tracking number is uploaded to your transaction and you pay less money. The end result- less time, no tracking headaches and its CHEAPER!

@DebraD
ebay offers discounts--- NO
they simply mark up the shipping cost and then apply a discount so it looks like you are receiving a discount!

I use stamps.com and even the post office walk in is the same price after ebay so called discounts
its just smoke and mirror's

ajeweler: No, ebay does not mark up the postage.  Check eBay's online price against the price on the USPS.COM web site.  Both are identical for commercial base pricing.  For Top Rated Sellers, they pay the commercial plus pricing, so there is even more of a discount.

Anyway, ebay has always stated they want to see ONLINE proof of delivery.  The insurance number cannot be viewed online, but I see now that someone says it does work.

@Ebayrefugeecamp, of course EBay wants everyone to blame the USPS, Fed Ex, or UPS for their ineptness and corruption. That has been their plan all along.  That is exactly why so many do indeed always blame the carriers rather than the seller or EBay.

@ajeweler - You are mistaken about the postage markups. I mailed a box yesterday. The price at the post office would have been $9.75. I paid $8.26 through PayPal. Look at any label you print out from eBay or PayPal; they all say "Commercial Base Pricing" (shortened to ComBasPrice).

It depends on which nitwit you talk with when you call eBay.  They have accepted my insurance number both as a buyer and as a seller.  The insurance label is scanned by the carrier (I know as I was a carrier for 10 years) and uploaded when the scanner is returned at the end of the carrier's tour of duty.

@ajeweler, my postage is always cheaper when I print it on EBay and that includes Fed Ex and UPS as well.  I know this because I have business accounts with all carriers and I go to their website and compare the pricing all the time.

@comet That said I do not use the on-line purchase of postage via ebay or anywhere else.

I don't use online shipping ,labels , I live 2 blocks from PO. My packages get out 1-3 days quicker than most. My customers are very happy!  Why would anybody?

My 100% / 5.0 / 0 defect speaks why. Customer satisfaction is 50 % SHIP TIMES. 50% quality of product , & getting it there in 1 piece.

My customers love the way I do things. They keep coming back. I don't need online labels to have success.

The post office should be ashamed of their so called 70lb. capable large priority flat rate boxes. They cant handle a very well packed 8 lbs., without getting there looking like it was used for a soccer ball. I immediately filed a claim & gave partial refund of item damaged hanging out of crap box. I bet the 3 photos of the unopened bent parts hanging out wont matter. Im considering UPS for all my venues.

@gizmo, why wouldn't anyone print their labels online? It's cheaper, way easier than waiting in line at the post office, and it's convenient. On the rare occasion that I have to take my package to the post office for postage it is always more expensive than printing it online.  And I am also a Top Rated Seller with lightning fast shipping times. My packages are usually in the carrier's hands within hours of payment received and my shipping time is my highest rating.  Also I have shipped thousands of packages around the world and also receive packages via USPS and it's extremely rare that my packages are damaged so you must have a bad local post office.
