eBay Shopper Fed Up with Low Quality Imports in Search Results

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
I sold an item to a buyer on eBay today. She called me because she had purchased the same item in Grand Cayman but they were so late - 2 months late - that she purchased it from me and plans on refusing theirs.

She called me about this and told me how she does not shop much on eBay these days because when she puts an item into the search, the search returns with really cheap low quality but super inexpensive Chinese items when she is looking for high quality jewelry.

She has so much trouble finding what she is looking for on eBay that she gives up. I have that same problem myself. I used to be a big eBay shopper but so many great products that are not trendy require such digging you would have to have tons of leisure time and just want to hang out shopping on eBay so we leave and don't buy anything!

It's funny that they send out messages to buyers saying "shop with top rated sellers" when they have all these deals like they want to be the next Alibaba. They do not know if they want to be Amazon, Target, Michael Kors or Alibaba. Do they want to be big box Walmart? These are the type of items they want to sell with the Chinese sellers.

I am glad they say they want to help the Chinese economy, what about having a search that pulls up close to what the buyer is looking for in quality and name and identifier?

They say if an item has been up a long time, they told me even if someone types up the exact title it may not show up! You have to remove it from eBay and do a fresh listing even if now that is a hot item because it has become rare! What the...?????

I thought last year was bad, this year makes the pre-split months look great. What are they doing?  They are offering incentive now for hot items for Christmas when Christmas is almost here. Very sad situation.

Top Rated since day 1 continuously yet not in search...sad. They want HOT they define HOT they don't know what HOT is. They need to open an eBayMart sister site for the Made in China items and the deals they are giving them, why do they give them better deals?  Do they want to source items like Amazon?

One issue may be for me is 14 day return so they wait 14 days before Christmas perhaps, but no way can I run a business with a longer return window the way it is now. That means cash flow could be seriously disrupted so the money is not really ours for 14 days. Makes it hard to know how to manage inventory purchases for the holidays.
Thanks for listening,
L.

OP, do everyone a favor.... message your buyer and remind them that they can refine their searches after finding too much cheap Chinese junk.

The left hand column of the search result page allows the potential buyer to refine their results to show only items from the US, North America etc...

In most cases, this will filter out the cheap crappola in most cases.

The new trend being used by Chinese sellers is to violate eBay policy and create their listing showing that the item is shipped from the USA.

Unfortunately, when this happens, reporting the seller does little good as eBay does not enforce policy on sellers in China.

Yes, What Ric says.

And I might add that if your buyer is willing have them write or contact Ebay about there concerns.  The only way it will ever change is if buyers decline purchasing from these sellers and voice their concerns.

But as long as there is a market for these sellers, they will remain.  So it really is up to the buyers in this case.

Ric that is a lot of work for  a buyer to do these days with stores bending over backwards for them. They do not really care so much if they go on cruises, can buy in Grand Cayman at discount because they can't find on eBay. The thing is many are not as into eBay because the personal experience that was shared between this buyer and seller are gone. This seller turned the sale around by talking to the buyer. Sales have only gone down since they took away the first FB and people REALLY want to know who they are buying from. Amazon built a brand even though they have sellers but there is only one Amazon..They founder is still there - maybe a former Chase guy with a bigger droning ego...but it did not go through the Bain days. If it ain't broke don't fis it. Just because Amazon had some vision doesn't mean eBay was not great ( do not mess with google in the search please...how stupid was that).

Ric what you suggest does not always work, a seller using china suppliers has the items shipped to the USA stored in a warehouse. The seller sells their item knowing it's made in China but the listing will state it ships from the USA, so in a sense it does being the item is stored here. This is just another way that ebay is bending over backwards for China sellers, so they can sell their cheap ass junk. Just wait until ebay opens the market for the China manufactures as they want to, sellers in the US want stand a chance.

The buyer doesn't know how to use the search function.  There's an "advanced" search function and she can narrow her purchases to "US Only".

China is on eBay to stay. Nothing will change that. It's what eBay management wants and it's what Wall Street wants. eBay bows to Wall Street.

eBay isn't known for listening to their customers so don't expect anything to change.

Don't you ever wonder how the heck their stay in business? Seriously - what's a penny getting you these days in china? They have to ship the danged thing whatever it is. Now their paying postage(or so I heard). they have to put it in an e-packet envelope. It (the item) cost something to make. Isn't paypal charging them the $.30 transaction fee? So what's eBay's cut of a penny? So here's my plan - we ALL agree to buy their penny stuff everyday - agree to devote just 1/2 hour to this daily. Do NOT bid on anything that already has a bid of a penny - we can break them - trust me. Eventually they will go away. I buy all kinds of their crap for a penny all the time. I do it just to pizz them off. I work with a gal who does craft things with children at a community center and I just give her the stuff for the kids to play with. I just can't figure out how the heck this works out for either ebay or the Chinese. And as many others have stated the whole site is so over loaded with junk the really good buyers just don't come here anymore.

@Whatever :
I have my disabled sister buying 1-cent items from China every day (hundreds this year). She loves doing it because it is like a scavenger hunt!
The items are junk and I toss them into a flea-market box to give away. HOWEVER, the purchases have resulted in my receiving a lot of bubble-envelopes that I can reuse!

The same story on Etsy that once billed itself as selling only "hand-made, vintage and supplies." Now everything coming in from China qualifies.

@toolguy

Thanks for your business update. We all sit on the edge of our seats waiting for your posts.

Speaking of toilets, as a retired aircraft worker I agree with you that toilet valves are perhaps one of the most critical parts on an airplane.

Consider the consequences of a misfiring toilet valve at 20,000 feet. Could the contents become projectiles??

It's nice to know that some sellers have found eBay Utopia.

It is my opinion that when you put in "US only" in the search box, then  you should only get US sellers. No bait and switch tactics.
Ebay needs to assign a code to every Chinese seller or direct import seller. None of the coded sellers should be  allowed to come up in search when a buyer puts in US only. That would solve that problem.
Also I would like to express my opinion on one other aspect of Chinese jewelry sellers. They should be held to the same ethics and standards as US sellers in delivery and quality of goods. They should not be allowed to state plated jewelry is sterling silver or other metal when it is not. Anything less on Ebay's part is arbitrary and prejudicial.

It's true that those toilet valves are extremely important.  Can you imagine one failing and the ground being bombarded by icy bm's?
