eBay Search Brings Back Disappointing Results

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
I did an eBay search today that was amusing. Looking for Stirling Engine models, I first searched:

- for "Stirling Engines", whereupon nearly all results were new imports;

- then North America only for "Stirling Engines" where most were also new imports;

- then North America only for "Hot Air Engines" where about half were new imports, but other half were older used USA models with most including "Stirling" in their title.

I didn't have time to search broader category and browse thousands of listings, just to see if invisible #3 results above were visible at a higher level.

I've been on eBay over 15 years and never seen such an extreme example of invisibility, usually just a few listings playing peek-a-boo during repeated browsing (I browse a few dozen categories regularly, some with fixed searches, some without).

If the BS is this bad with lame models, even casual buyers will encounter similar with common items and bail the site.

Hopefully, letgo site gets their act together asap, I'm tired of eating eBay crow.
Best regards,
Matt

Exactly, OP!

Between eBay's search dysfunction and other's glitches, will everyone be forced to work harder to find what they seek?

Seeking a particular brand common item this morning.

eBay search - ZERO result, end of story. Or there, but Cassini chose not show it .

walmart.com - had item, good price, shopping cart NOT WORKING. And WM wants delivery drones, like Amazon!!!

drugstore.com - had item, really slow. Not best price but log-in was frozen.

neiman marcus - did not have item but I noticed they are HEAVILY promoting free shipping and free return shipping. The Zappos effect?

amazon - had the item, good price, snappy results - no loading issues.  Seller had free ship, ordered 4!  easy peasy, already shipped. Amazon gets today's on-the-ball award.

Amazon always gets the " try it here first award". Rarely does one have to travel to Fleecebay after checking Amazon.

Yes. My sister was complaining to me today that she did a search for Fenton vaseline glass and got 15 items. She was disappointed. I did a search and got over 800 items, but then I am a seller and she is a buyer. Don't know if that makes a difference??

Ebay search is pretty bad. I have found so many times that you cannot find what you are looking for even though it's clearly there.

It's ineptitude is only exceeded by Groupon.com, where you search for something word for word with the exact title, and it says none.

But you know it's there and here it is after all. I complained to Gtroupon, they really didn't understand the problem. Well, their Indian outsourced email answerers didn't understand.

I think if I search for something by it's exact name and it exists, it should be returned.

Thank god google doesn't work like this, or they'd be out of business.

Just try browsing any category and then reload the web page multiple times. Every reload will yield different results and I don't mean just newly listed items. Older listings will come and go from your display each time you reload. It just seems to be pure luck what you get displayed.

@BobNJ===If you use multiple ebay accounts you can often get completely DIFFERENT results.  Anywhere form ZERO to a few thousand items depending on your search item.

How can this be a viable business model?

Oh wait---what WAS I thinking.

Amen to what everyone else said.  I search find nothing.  Husband searches same terms gets a couple hundred. and I can see on the count of items per category that there are tens of thousands more.  So I guess ebay doesn't want us to buy them.   No problem! I've found everything I want elsewhere, like Basset, sometimes other websites, or then again, I'm used to zipping out to the store and buying when I'm forced to. I hate doing that knowing some ebay seller would love the sale but I'm done "working" to buy.

ChannelAdvisor had a good "legal bribe" for the mailing list yesterday - the 5 Consumer Trends Retailers Need to Know about - ebay management should read it with emphasis on the item about • Zero-Friction Transactions

Yes, it's bad, and sellers continue to see their inventory go poof!  Buyer contacted me last week and asked me what happened to an item she had been watching in our store.  Item was no longer active, and not in solds and not in unsold.  It had simply disappeared.  I put the item number that was in her message to me in the search box and voila, there it was.  I relisted it.

eBay, the great magician, hiding and ending listings without one's approval.

A few months ago, I screwed up a shipment. This was a BIG screw up where I sent one doll to Australia and one to South Carolina (those dolls all look alike to me!)

The Aussie was flippant and just wanted to keep the doll I sent. The American was, of course ('murica), ticked off and wanted what she ordered (which I do actually understand and is why I jumped through some hoops to make sure she got it)

In any case, I did a search to find her a new doll like the one I owed her.

I did ebay search: "Lee Middleton Doll Cute Baby" (forget the actual name of the doll now, so let's just call it "Cute Baby"). Nothing.

Did ebay completed search: "Lee Middleton Cute Baby". Nothing.

Google it. There's the same doll, unsold on ebay about a week before, but it never showed up in their own listings, completed or otherwise. Title of the auction "Lee Middleton Cute Baby".

Can't See Me at its finest.

I clicked the link to the defunct auction in Google search and contacted the seller, she relisted, and I bought the doll and sent it to my buyer.

Had I not googled it, ebay would have lost a sale.

My entire long-winded point here is that the seller had the exact words in her title and description that I had entered in ebay search twice and it never came up!

It's no wonder it didn't sell the first time she listed.

Because I was desperate to save my DSR, I did extra legwork to find it. Other buyers usually won't be that motivated and there goes the sales.

Cassini needs to go.

eBay search

It brings me buyers so I can't complain!

I also have no problem finding what I'm looking for to buy on eBay.

I agree with everyone that using eBay's search engine (and others as well) is more luck and magic than science.

I just survived another week long absence of sales. Seems the third or fourth week of a month is dead air.  No inquiries, no offers and no sales.  Having read concurring comments from other long time sellers on eBay, that this is not a random act of nature but a deliberately planned sabotage on eBay's part.

Seems sellers are paying good money for eBay fees so the search engine will not work.  EBay 2015!

But on the other hand, I have become very dependent on eBay's app on my cheap smart phone.  I source most of my vintage items at antique malls and antique shows.  With predictable good results, I search for items on eBay that I am unfamiliar with.

The eBay app does not always come up with the item of interest but playing around with words I am rewarded most of the time with a ''buy or do not buy'' decision.

Gosh, and eBay does not even charge me for using the app.  How did that happen?

Haha.
I have heard that kind of stuff from people like toolguy before.
I always ask this:  If you are selling $100,000, maybe you should be selling $400,000?

Search is SO screwed up. I search a category all the time for a particular item. I always choose the "all categories" option. Yet without fail, 90% of the time, Cassini will search under a totally unrelated category. The category Ebay searches under can be anything but my search. Today they had it searching under "Coins and Paper Money. Something completely unrelated to my search. This happens all the time. I have to go back and change it constantly to "all categories. Then I will get the items I want to see. No wonder people give up trying to find anything if they are not noticing what category Ebay put you in.

@Beanie

I am experiencing the same issue with not getting "all categories" in my search results.

It's very frustrating if I don't say so myself.

But at least I know the problem is there, can't say the same for "missed" buyers!

Welcome to AI, artificial intelligence. This is our future now. No options, or choices because a computer thinks it knows better than we do what we want. It's not only on eBay but many shopping sites have adopted this nonsense.

When I encounter this same stupidity, I leave the site without buying a thing. No wonder we have so few sales.

@toolguy, Sorry it is happening to you too. I thought it was me and I was doing something wrong. But time and again I would go to Ebay, fresh search, cookies, cache etc. cleared and it always happens. I believe this has to be one of the main problems, if not THE problem with people not finding things and they end up in frustration and leave. Ebay NEEDS to really get rid of Cassini.
