The Mysteries of the eBay Top Rated Seller Program

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
After losing Top Rated Seller status six months ago, for who know what reason, I decided to stop jumping through eBay's hoops.

I stop listing with free shipping, unless free shipping made sense. About 50% of my listing have free shipping. I changed handling time from one business days to two business days. I still uploaded tracking to all sales (which eBay still said I only uploaded 95.35% of your transactions had tracking uploaded within handling time and validated by carrier - my fault USPS tracking doesn't work sometimes??)

Today I get an email from eBay saying "You're an eBay Top Rated Seller."

Now the wheels are coming off the bus at eBay they think I care they gave me back Top Rated Seller status. Top rated Seller status made no difference in sales volume.

After Cassini and the drop in sales of 75%, I started two eCommerce web sites. Now 80% of sales come from those websites.

What I wonder is how I made Top rated Seller. The only thing I do 100% is upload tracking information. This company has become a joke.
Thanks,
C.

Here is the email from eBay:

Dear C,
Congratulations! You've achieved Top Rated Seller status, meeting eBay's US seller performance standards. To make buyers aware of your commitment to customer service, eBay will identify you as a Top Rated Seller. You are also now eligible to opt-in to eBay's new managed returns process.

Having Top Rated status also makes you eligible for these additional benefits on any of your listings that offer a 1-day handling time and 14-day or longer return policy with money back option:

- 20% discount on final value fees
- Increased search standing when you follow our listing best practices and consistently deliver great service
- A prominent Top Rated Plus seal

To make sure you maintain your eBay Top Rated status, check your Seller Dashboard regularly. Remember, in addition to satisfying other evaluation criteria, to maintain your Top Rated status, you will need to continue to upload tracking within your stated handling time on 90% or more of US transactions. Once you've maintained Top Rated Seller status for three consecutive months, your status may be eligible for a grace period - time to get back on track without losing your discounts or benefits - if you fall below the sales or tracking upload requirements.

Again, congratulations and thank you for your hard work as one of eBay's best sellers.

No doubt this is all done via a poorly constructed algorithm: when the algorithm senses that there are too many TRSs, it cuts down on TRSs; when it gets to the point that it worries about a dearth of TRSs, it reinstates some; it’s as simple as that; no human intervention involved; certainly, no intelligent intervention involved; all you can hope for is that with a reinstatement to TRS these modern-day Mafioso will allow your listings some exposure to the buying public …

And, gee, “you are also now eligible to opt-in to eBay's new managed returns process.”—LOL

And don’t forget that “Top Rated Plus” seal—LOL

Fortunately, it’s always been easy to tell when eBay (or PayPal) is being disingenuous—their lips are moving ...

The one portion of eBay's letter that should have set off alarms: "You are also now eligible to opt-in to eBay's new managed returns process."

I wonder if this is a new eBay ploy: Designate a bunch of sellers as Top Rated so those sellers can be sucked into Managed Returns.

Does it matter? No! eBay will suck you in to their games and then take away all that you have. eBay is the most corrupt institution is the US. If Bobby Kennedy was still alive they would be doing an investigation into all the corruption and RICO acts that they are doing. But then again all of corporate is to blame. All of the corporations are corrupt and our government is corrupt.

Power to the People!

Top Rate Seller is simply a title.  Unless you are a mega-brand retailer on eBay, status means nothing.

It's like having top tier status in a frequent flyer program on a wingless jet.

TRS is a carrot that is not worth chasing.

Ebay has burned themselves, and frankly I do not care anymore if it dies.

My spending on ebay has adjusted itself to mirror the sales I receive there.....except in my effort to do things as perfectly as possible, I have increased my non participation in buying on the site to 100%

Ebay is now a scam and a joke.

Is there any indication that buyers care whether or not a seller has ''A prominent Top Rated Plus seal'' displayed on their listings?

This is no lie. Ebay sent me an email stating I made Top Rated Seller status, and within ten days, sent me another stating I was no longer a Top Rated seller. No negs or neutrals, or defects, but this was about a year ago. Meant nothing to me then or now.

After the cough syrup defect, like rhawk, I no longer buy on Ebay.

Anyone else noticing a recurring theme on many of the topic responses in the last year.

It is: "I no longer buy on Ebay."

Are you reading eBay?

TRS has been kicked around so much. Didn't some management person who had not yet left to spend more time with family say they were going to change it in 2015, or do away with it or something?

Still get the random AttaBasset! emails that don't make much sense. Like back when I downgraded my store because sales decreased so much.  Got glowing emails urging me to upgrade to the $200 level store.

Clue:  Only feel comfortable upgrading store if there is REASON to upgrade store.

Someone needs to take a dip in the basic math, logic and common sense pond.

Oh by the way you do not get the seal shown in your ads, nor in the search, so what is the point. You have to give 1 day shipping, managed returns, close all cases in buyer favor and click your leels three times and fly

What is REALLY ODD is I SHOULD have lost my trs 2-3 months ago.
Still have it, haven't sold in 7-8 months- only 60 items sold this year and STILL trs?

I am not trying to rub it in my brothers and sisters but they seem hesitant to take mine away!??

@MH, I did say is was a poorly written algorithm that was controlling sellers' TRS status, didn't I?

Total mystery.
My top-rated seller email arrived literally in the SAME week as eBay mistakenly froze my account accusing me of a fraudulent item (which it was not).
Talk about the right hand having NO idea what the left hand is doing...

Re: free shipping-
After 3+ years at this I have come to realize customers truly do not give a hoot about paying for shipping.
If you have a product they want, they will pay fair shipping prices.
They do not care.
I tried the free shipping route after eBay was strongly recommending.
I not only saw zero increase in sales, but lost major money.
Not worth it at all-
Just have the customer pay.
Most consumers expect to pay shipping fees on any website other than Amazon Prime.
Even free ship w/ most companies comes only w/ a minimum purchase.

Nope! I make it a point not to buy anything on Ebay!

Don't sell much there anymore either.

It continues to amaze me that I sell things newly listed on Etsy, when the same things have been listed on Ebay for years, with no sales.

And, I have one of those TRSs on that account too. I can't understand why they don't take it away. I get the feeling there is no one left in the big Ebay building in San Jose. It is just all those servers humming along, with their algorithms catering to the Big Sellers.

Hmmmmmmm-

I was a top rated seller last month;lost it this month and will probably get it back next month. Been this way for almost six months. No sense to any of it. Same reason, USPS tracking. I ship every single item usually on the same day I get the order within an hour of mail time, and if not, then positively the next day. My policy is two days handling, no returns without my OK, and I will provide positive customer service without ebays two cents worth. EBay policies are a joke and always have been. Top rated seller means nothing to me or my sales and as far as ebay goes: I will ride this horse until it dies and then move on.
