Reader Says eBay Ignores Report of Art Forger

Dear Ina,
I know eBay doesn't give a flip about stopping shill bidders, but,...

A constant shill bidder/seller I've followed/reported for over 2 years recently bought a painting from China and the post clearly stated it would be hand-painted after the auction end. Just as I expected of this scum-bag, he framed it after receipt & posted it as an antique painting from Italy.

I called Customer Service & gave both item numbers, where he bought it & the false "Italian antique" post. The rep assured me it would go to Trust & Safety for correction by the seller. Needless to say, nothing has been done by eBay.

This seller has frequently bought items he knows are new & re-sells them, claiming they are antique. I despise the fact that eBay has stooped so low as to allow continued misrepresentation. It is reprehensible!
Karen

Karen - Does any underhanded, despicable and/or illegal thing eBay does really shock anyone now? That seems to be "business as usual" for them. When the buyer files a SNAD claim, maybe the seller can use Hassle-Free Returns.

And eBay wonders why the collectable sales are so low.

What a bunch of incompetent fools!

I have been reporting one seller for five years now to ebay for seller illegal fakes with fake maker's marks.
He is in China. If he was in the US, he would be in jail for doing this.
Ebay has done nothing.

@Donkey - I guess you didn't read the recent article here about so-called 'new vintage' where, "... eBay Marketplaces President Devin Wenig [said] eBay sends [Chinese] manufacturers data about what people are searching for on eBay so they can quickly manufacture items to meet those needs." More evidence that eBay is engaged in illegal activities.

Another eBay rule of thumb....

If Wall Street does not care - eBay does not care.

If Wall Street analysts saw forged/fake artwork as a financial liability to eBay, the company would take swift action to mitigate the issue in order to appease their Wall Street masters.

Since Wall Street only seems to care about gross revenue and bottom line profits, eBay will continue to turn a blind eye to these kind of issues. For as long as the sale of these fakes contribute to eBay's Gross Merchandise values and the fees generated build bottom line profits the chances of eBay taking action are slim and none.

If you don't want fakes, you better filter out China for sure.

If enough people search for Italian paintings, then Devin Wenig will have the Communist Chinese make hundreds of thousands.

Ebafia is the biggest criminal syndicate operating in this country. It's also the world's largest venue for fencing stolen goods.

The OP should call the internet crime division of the nearest FBI field office. The FBI can't touch the Chinese scammer, but they sure as hell can go after ebay for encouraging, facilitating, and participating in case after case of felony fraud and shill bidding.

Probably wouldn't hurt to contact Sotheby's so they can see what their 'competition' is up to courtesy of ebay's likely de facto non existent T&S. It went to the way of GSP CS.

eBay doesn't care.
The FVFs on counterfeits spend as well as the FVFs on authentic merchandise.

That's Donahoe's idea of a zero sum transaction.

YA do have to ask tho----

HOW STUPID ARE THE BUYERS OF THESE FAKES???

IF they are actually SO stupid that they cannot spot that these are indeed re-framed Chinese repros---or maybe they don't even CARE---then is reality there has been "No harm".

Now--I know!--you and I certainly do NOT agree with this.  But--there it is.  One of the so-called "Victim-less crimes".

OF course this is false and of course ebay is indeed complicit in fraud and theft and importing fake items.

But as mentioned above---if no one ELSE cares--

IT does however throw EVERYTHING Sothebys etc offers ON ebay into a deep shadow.  I certainly would NOT buy from them until ebay shut these fakes down--but we all KNOW this is NOT going to happen.

(((And see the NY TIMES on how these major auctions houses fought to KEEP stolen temple art selling even in the face of massive international outcry)))

What made me choke when reading the article on WENING and his criminal activity--ie INSTRUCTING HIS CHINESE MASTERS WHAT TO MAKE---was that if you and I were caught faking and then selling those SAME items WE would be kicked off of ebay in a nano second.

So---- one hand really claims to not KNOW what the other is doing----I find it HARD to believe that NO ONE from the FBI on up or down does NOT care about this.

It is beyond blatant when this guy sits there with a big smirk on his face and rubs his greedy paws together and TELLS us what a bunch of schmucks WE are while HE is having another Chinese factory STEAL another companies work and COPY it.

Hypocrites.  And apparently--

NO ONE CARES

AND---as to the OP==-=put this info together and send it off to Sothebys.  They have  a reputation to uphold even if ebay no longer does.

I was solicited to buy wholesale bootleg DVDs from China.  The seller claimed to have many happy customers selling on eBay and Amazon.  I called eBay to report it, and after 20 minutes and talking to two reps, I gave up when the rep wanted to transfer me to a third.  It shouldn't be hard to report criminal behavior that hurts eBay, sellers, and buyers.

The first person I talked to should have been able to take the information and then been empowered to send it to the right people.

Sad.

Thought I read somewhere that ebay is setting up a warehouse in CA for the chinese sellers. This is for faster ship times?? OR is it that they can list USA as seller but still be chinese knockoffs???
Maybe this has something to do with JD and his gov't position. As long as his bud the prez is still in office. JD can shoot someone and no one will do anything.
