eBay Management Team Fails to Turn Around Sales Decline

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
I have been a part time eBay seller for over 10 years and have been extremely disappointed with the track they are taking. Sales have dropped dynamically and although the downside to the economy has been partially responsible, the eBay management team has not done much to help.

The FREE listings have done nothing but encourage people to clog up the website with outlandishly priced items and the unrealistic expectations for sellers to be graded is BS. I ship USPS mostly first class (untracked). I believe it is right to give the buyers the best shipping deal they can get as shipping has become very expensive since I began.

I am hopeful to continue on as an eBay seller but am exploring other options and it won't take much more to push me out of the eBay loop!! I would appreciate any comments from other sellers!!

Know what you mean:

In the reinventing the wheel department: on one account my purchases screen has been re-designed.

Each individual purchase field is quite larger. To make it look like I purchased more?

Um... July sales were down 40% year over year for me. At that rate, that ONE purchase I'm able to afford will soon be taking up the whole screen.

Without SALES the ''Purchases'' section is rather pointless. There are many things that SHOULD be a higher priority than how the ''purchases'' page looks.

Not helping: Since the latest 1.2 Billion data breach hit the news, its been dead. I think everyone is just tired of it all.

If you tell men's clothes, try grailed.com.  Unlike other venues, this one actually works.  Recently the website started covering paypal fees of the sold items so its really free to sell and to buy.  I have been kinda shocked myself how fast this marketplace has been gaining popularity merely through word of mouth and rumoring in social media.  I sent a letter to Ina recommending the website (unfortunately the letter was not published) because everyone seems to hate ebay but the alternatives are lacking.  I suppose the answer might be these niche marketplaces by the way.  However, one gotta reach the size of etsy to get some coverage here it seems, which is regrettable.  Speaking of coverage, there was an article in one of the recent GQ about grailed.com.

Ebay is all about making a profit for it's investors. It's not interested in what impacts the mom and pop occasional seller. They cater to the big volume, fixed price, new item sellers (a lot of them are in China). Ebay's goal is to be like Amazon. This is why they have been slowly but surely phasing out auctions or making it harder for mom and pop sellers to remain on the site. with the new defects policy, many more good sellers will be leaving either voluntarily or by undeserved defects. A big batch of good sellers left a few years ago and even more will be leaving. With all the decline in sellers and sales, maybe that is why ebay is going to partner with Sotheby's. You know how we've been hearing about the income gap? Well ebay is adding to that by catering to a higher clientele with Sotheby's. It's no surprise since ebay is in Silicon Valley. Ebay's CEO seem to have that elitist mentality. That is why he referred to ebay's auctions as ''flea market atmosphere''. That is why since he came on board, there was a great push for fixed price listing rather than auctions. Is that why they seem to allow shill bidding to perhaps generate complaints and thus say ''we get a lot of complaints about auctions''? Or not punishing non payers or others who violate policies with bid retractions? This will add to the complaints so they can falsely justify ridding the site of auctions so they can be like Amazon.

They discontinued seller's ability to leave negative feedback for buyers back in 2008. That is when a large number of sellers left (can't remember the reason). Non payers cannot get negative feedback but they can leave negative feedback if sellers do not report the non payment. Now a seller cannot look at a buyer's purchase history. So they can't tell if a buyer has purchased an identical item for a cheaper price and is now trying to not pay for the higher one.

Ebay is not the fun place to buy or sell like it used to be.

Years ago when I debated in college we had a crude but accurate fun phrase.

''If you can convince them with logic, dazzle them with B---S---.

The Ho has done the latter.

He hasn't lived up to his responsibilities to improve stock price for investors. The stock is virtually stagnant which means that it's lost ground in a generally strong market.

He erroneously implemented a Best Match search that didn't work and, even if it had, was a very bad idea because one size does not fit all. Even the programmer who developed the first Best Match quit ebay and declared The Ho was misusing his search system.

In the process of his remarkably unsuccessful stewardship, he destroyed or significantly weakened hundreds of thousands of profitable pre Ho small businesses, began the campaign to make enemies out of his customers, has been the impetus for several anti ebay word of mouth campaigns that exposed ebay's duplicity and criminal acts against sellers which effectively encouraged many, many buyers to explore other sites they otherwise might never tried had it not been for the unrelenting abuse he's heaped on some sellers including a steady drumbeat of free increases that have buying ebay more expensive than other online venues the brici and mortar world.

Phil, you keep track of these things better than I do, but I think this Year 7 of The Ho's ''three year turnaround plan.''

This sociopath has eliminated women from most top level management positions, has literally stolen millions from sellers, failed to report critical information to SEC, daily violates FTC regulations, interferes with businesses, and generally runs the site in such a way that RICO laws could certainly be made to apply to his criminal syndicate.

The upper management team Ho has put together has to be among the sleaziest in Silicon Valley, and no one should trust them with their investment dollars.

They pond scumbags never met a lie they didn't like njor a small seller they didn't want to exterminate.

John Donahoe is responsible for literally annihilating at least as many small American businesses than WalMart.

Instead he kisses up to the Communist Chinese arranging for special USPS deals, building west coast warehouses for them, and deliberately not enforcing site policies against Chinese sellers while pouncing on small American sellers as quickly and as heavy handedly as possible for the least little thing.

The Ho is a catastrophic failure. But he must have the skills of a snake charmer if in fact he did persuade Carl Icahn of his good intentions.

NOW is time for Carl Icahn to come out the woodwork and give The Ho one nasty little surprise since the BoD has likewise abjectly failed in its oversight responsibilities.

These men are nothing more than corporate rapists.

Ebay has given us very little in the way of free listings in the last three months and it has been so slow that i am not listing half of my stuff because i cant afford to pay the fees for items that are not selling. And i dont inflate my prices for free listings. They are always fair. I can't list a lot of good inventory for the fees. Ebay is slow. They know they are slow and so do we. Should be time for some free listings. My feres last month were half of what i sold at retail.

eBay is far from off the hook. They are not going to get away with it. At this very moment, in two social media groups, scores of people have imported their ebay items over to another online selling site, OnlineAuctions.com Not much? Well one of them is in the process of bringing some 2,000 ebay sellers over to this other venue (no, I am not exaggerating, no I am not making this up). Now all of this has been happening just in the past 72 hours. It will not stop. it will continue. There is an organized, serious, dedicated effort to make the world aware of what eBay is doing and has become and an equally organized, serious, dedicated effort to help small sellers move over to other venues.

NetWatch - your post is music to my ears.  I don't really care weather Ebay succeeds or doesn't succeed with their ''new direction'' - I care that some of the other options DO succeed.  In order for that to happen it is going to take a grass roots mass movement of both customers and sellers to the other sites.  If more friends and family knew what Ebay had done to the reputations of good sellers they would stop buying from them, as I did after finding out what they did to my relative - an honest hard working man who would never cheat a customer, but finally said ''no'' when the nasty customers kept trying to extort free merchandise.  Enough is enough.

@Netwatch

I saw the count on the site you are talking about. Wow in just the last couple days I saw the same over 2000 more sellers & I'm pretty sure we are talking about the same site.

I just hope that these other sites are ready for the influx of new sellers.!

That is where Google Ad words come in. With the lack of exposure on eBay and the high fees when an item does sell, it makes more sense to control your own marketing rather than leaving it in the hands of a venue. People need to take back control of their business.

I was amazed at the jump in seller accounts!!

Why is eBay throwing their own business away? There is an old saying in sales: It's easy to get new customers, but almost impossible to regain a lost customer.

Sellers leaving eBay are eBay's lost customers.

Everyone recoginizes ''Ebay'' and thinks of selling/buying. I just take a while to get people to realize that there are better places.

@NetWatch
Thanks for another site to sell on.

I have also watched ebid.com grow and then unisquare.com is also growing. (Maybe not as much as Auctiononline, but they are growing.
I had already signed up with both of them and transferred my ebay 100% feedback before the new policy rating comes into effect.
Don't have the $96/yr for free listing/fees but I will wait. I am debating of using just one of the above services first.

What makes anyone think eBay management wants to turn around the sales decline? The fact that they seem to go out of their way to destroy any sellers that aren't in the favored classes (Toys R Us, Chinese) should be proof enough that they don't want to take any action to increase sales.

I think ebay is done for the average seller, there is no way you could maintain an ebay account, it's almost impossible for a lot of item categories, the system is rigged against you, designed for failure, just like best match, ebay is cheating, they are liars,

Even the Chinese are leaving ebay, I have noticed a lot have started their own websites, and the prices are better, so they are adapting to the new Wacko Ebay, by moving away and taking some product and putting it into other venues too,

I think it really depends on how desperate you are to keep selling on ebay, sure it's possible to jump to multiple accounts, but really? why bother at this point, even our website sales are outselling ebay 5 to 1 right now, better to spend the time to keep improving, adding items to our site, and other more stable venues,

We have been adapting, twisting, re-organizing, changing, altering our business to meet Wacko ebay rules for way too long, if ebay wants to run my business they can buy me out, until then, we are simply not going to let them near it, we have been in business for thirty years, we know how to sell stuff,

Ebay will NEVER EVER regain what they once had, it's gone, JDeeIdiot opened a can of worms and their not going to ever go back in the can, He really should seriously consider having his head examined by a professional.
He will certainly go down in history as the man who buried ebay.

Yeah, they took down search for DAYS so they could CHANGE THE FONTS

wha????

ANY other store, brick and mortar that did the stupid things ebay does on a daily basis would go out of business, but WE AS SELLERS keep it going.

We need to AGREE on one place. Everybody going scattershot to 10 different places will not help. NO WONDER none of these sites are doing well.

Then when you get there, part of it ahs to be YOU, running your business, bringing your following, and getting traffic FOR that venue.

You guys want free free free, but expect ebay traffic. Doesn't work that way. Didn't work that way for ebay in the beginning.

PICK A PLACE ALREADY

Let us let these goofs go where they should be, the garage sale / trash bin.

OP, you are not alone. I, too, am a part time seller for over 10 years. I run two eBay accounts: one with luxury merchandise and one with ordinary merchandise. Both accounts have been down significantly over the last year. I have called eBay, and the eBay seller outreach program multiple times for suggestions and analysis. Each time I have been told ''we haven't noticed sales are down.'' My $25 items are selling as slowly as my 8K items. 100% FB and TRS status.

You are correct that 'free' (there is that pesky word again) listings are clogging up eBay.

A few days ago, I synced my low end store with Bonanza to see what happens. The process was incredibly easy unlike 11 Main (listing on 11 Main is nightmarish unless you ship all your items with one shipping rate...this site has a lot of kinks to work out and I won't be using it, but that is another post).

As you surmise, it is not you (or me) but rather economic doldrums and corporate malfeasance.
