eBay Takes Credit for Providing USPS Shipping Discount?

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
I have been selling on eBay since 1998. I have been selling, essentially, the same product for all of those years. I used to do fairly well with sales between $2,000 and $3,000 per month. But since John Donahue my sales have dropped to $500 in a good month.

I have been a top rated seller since the top rated seller designation began. We are supposed to get a special postage rate discount. But not always... eBay is actually taking credit for the normal on-line discount that anyone would get when shipping through the USPS website.

Here is the supposed "eBay discount" for a regional rate package going from Pennsylvania to California:

Your postage cost
Postage cost: $10.72
USPS Tracking: Free
Your eBay Discount (7%): -$0.75
Total: $9.97

Note that $9.97 is exactly the cost of the same package when printed on the USPS website. eBay is giving a 0% discount but taking credit for the 7% on-line discount that the USPS gives. Such a deceitful company.
In Peace,
Kathlene

Below is the letter I sent to Ina about ebay's alternative for mens clothes: GRAILED.COM  Not only it actually generates sales, the website now PAYS your paypal fee.  Please see the letter below!

Hello Ina,
I am one of the many avid readers of your ecommercebytes blog and I would like to introduce and highly recommend a relatively new marketplace for mens clothes, www.grailed.com.  I am NOT in any way affiliated with this website other than being a seller there pretty much from the onset last year.  I found it through reddit's frugal fashion marketplace absolutely by accident last November and it has been my number one marketplace in terms of sales.

Grailed.com is absolutely free to list and to buy.  But what distinguishes it from other venues is that the website has started paying the sellers' paypal fee for the sold items, which is truly revolutionary!!!  So the website is TOTALLY FREE TO BUY AND TO SELL!!!  I have sold 50 items there (here is what I list there:  http://www.grailed.com/users/myitems/435-outletmonster) and again, I am super happy about it.

In terms of the convenience, the listing process is a breeze from the seller's perspective, and buying is even easier.  The site's popularity has been growing by leaps and bounds as far as I can tell largely through the word of mouth and social media rumoring.

The guys who came up with it are pretty talented.  Who knows, maybe by spreading the word in the seller's community and continued growth, they will come up with the equally ingeniously designed verson of 'grailed' for women and/or other specialized items and groups.  You know better than anyone else that the sellers community has been clamoring for friendlier marketplace and grailed.com is a truly one of them.

Thanks a lot for your time and attention.  I hope you will let others know about this website.  And again, please be assured that I am not in any way affiliated with the website and this is my honest and sincerely recommendation.

Best wishes,
SK (Outletmonster)

Wot? eBay is claiming to provide a discount when in reality they are not? So, what's new?

If they were actually getting a discount above and beyond what USPS was already giving on their website, they'd likely pocket it for themselves.

It would not surprise me at all if they have negotiated a better deal with USPS and are actually doing that.

Ebay makes money on the shipping fee and also makes money between the standard online postage fee and the deeper discounted USPS rate they receive. The deeper discount table now starts at 30,000 parcels per year.

All flat rate and regional rates are the same as the USPS website. It is only with standard Priority Packaging that you would see a difference with the Commercial plus rate with eBay (if you are a top rated seller).

It is just a line of code that it defaults to stating it is an "eBay" exclusive discount.

I noticed the "discount" information began with the redesign of PayPal's site. If I am paid through PayPal and click on the "print label" button I'm told how much PayPal is saving me. If I use their MultiOrder Shipping program, I don't get that same information.

Since I started selling on eBay full time a few years back, I have used some sort of shipping program or another, as I've found that it really streamlines shipping. A good shipping program will not only pre-fill all of the customs forms for you, but will also tie in multiple shipping accounts (i.e. USPS, FEDEX, UPS), multiple sales venues (eBay, Amazon, Etsy), will fill out customs paperwork for you, and get you access to the best shipping rates available. I have been using Shipsurance for the last year and a half and have been very happy with it. It's subscription based starting at $25 / mo, but you will easily save that much money and/or time by using it. eBay still provides the best rates for FEDEX though, so be sure to compare shipping quotes for yourself!

Ebay qualifies for commercial plus rates... so to provide only the regular on-line USPS discount means eBay is not only NOT PROVIDING A TOP RATED DISCOUNT AS PROMISED they are pocketing the difference on top of the final value fee they already charge on shipping.  And they are taking false credit to boot (code is no excuse - that would be simple to fix) They are despicable cheats.

You can almost guarantee that eBay is receiving commercial-plus pricing but only offering up the standard commercial pricing (what you get on the USPS website) to its sellers and pocketing the rest.

Many of the 3rd party shipping services do offer the commercial-plus pricing to their subscribers and those rates are below what the standard commercial rates are that the USPS offers for online purchases from their site.

trader_chris, why would you pay $25 per month for a shipping program when EBay's is free and does exactly what you said your paid subscription shipping program does (except for multiple sales venues like Etsy & Amazon)? Also, in the last 6 months when comparing insurance rates with ShipCover versus USPS, USPS has been beating ShipCover's rates more than half the time, whereas years ago ShipCover was always cheaper insurance. It pays to compare the the insurance cost for each package because sometimes the insurance is cheaper with ShipCover, but usually the USPS insurance is cheaper now.

There is an old saying "There is no telling what can be accomplished if it does not matter who gets the credit." I am OK with eBay taking the credit - at least with eBay labels you get an automatic upload of the tracking number.  What I would like to know is why the tracking number is no longer free with media mail.

So if you count revenues coming into eBay Marketplaces such as eBay pocketing USPS discounts and advertising fees charged to advertisers on marketplaces you can easily see how eBay pump up Marketplaces revenue.

Meanwhile many sellers sales remain stagnant.

from my understanding, ebay is the customer to USPS, then they get the rates Top Rated Seller get, which is the "commercial plus" I think it's called, it's the lowest rate, yet they only pass that on to "top rated plus" if you're not you get the normal online discount, and ebay pockets the difference. I think this is deceitful, everyone should get the lowest shipping rate, ebay shouldn't pocket any shipping money, they already do in fvf.

Ebay robs its users coming and going.
In the 14 years we sold on ebay, we never used any of their shipping services. We have always had an outside shipping service. (stamps.com)

The way I see it, even back them was don't use ebay for anything other than selling- nothing else.

Of course, now we have abandoned ebay so we no longer use any of their services.

Getting away from ebays strangle hold on our business was very liberating.
