Will You Offer Free Shipping on eBay after August 20th?

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
We are quickly approaching the August 20th deadline for the new order defects to come in place (on eBay).

There has been a lot of talk everywhere on the site in a lot of different spots, but I for one would like to see one spot like replying to this letter where everyone can say what they are going to do after Aug 20th and how this will change their listing and business philosophy.

For example, are you still going to feature free shipping if, as I understood it, we are no longer being tracked on that?

I'm confused, scared and a lil nervous on what to expect.  But, don't worry, the eBay Fall seller updates are soon coming!

Management is desperate to increase revenue due to the fact that they do not have the first clue as to how they might accomplish that goal by growing sales. eBay's motives behind the defect rate policy is to eliminate as many sellers as they can from receiving or qualifying for the TRS Plus discounts.

Now, consider eBay is looking back 1 year and applying the new policies to old transactions in order to expedite seller removals from the discount program.

IMO, it would be unwise for sellers to discontinue free shipping or change any other actions simply because eBay is no longer weaponizing them against sellers.

Six months or a year from now, when eBay needs to cull more sellers, they will change the ground rules again. The next round of discount culling could likely include eBay resuming to consider free shipping and apply the new policy with a 12 month look back.

Sellers would be ill advised to change any strategy simply because eBay is not scoring it for or against them today and keep in mind that eBay's schizophrenic management will change the rules once again if they find a metric they can leverage to benefit their bottom line.

Sellers who may change strategy now because eBay is no longer scoring free shipping in their favor will be walking right into the trap their untrustworthy trading partner is setting for them.

It will be business as usual.  Only free shipping when it makes sense.

We're spending 90% of our time building off of eBay.  This summer has been eye opening, and the last three months have seen the worst sales of our 12 years on the site.  It is pathetic what eBay have become.

eBay has signaled loud and clear that they do not want us as a business partner.  We can't grow our business there due to Cassini search that hides our listings, on again off again servers and eBay's insane policies.

Ina, still waiting on an investigative story on how the security breech and Google search changes have affected Donahoe's favored sellers (big box and big brand retailers, and the Chinese mega sellers).  I'm hoping that you will do one.  If their sales have been hit like small sellers' sales have, then we will all know that eBay will have to make some big changes or else marketplaces will continue to die.  Based on our sales this week marketplaces is in a severe coma.

Not a carrot jumper so nothing will change... We have 3 day shipping and all shipping is free...

Ebay can go pound sand for all we care. If we gather to many defects or whatever they call them and they don't want us we will just send everything to the other 5 sites we are currently using.

I don't offer free shipping unless buyers buy enough to reach a certain price point.

Basically the same deal several large online retailers have (walmart, drugstore, etc...)
In the past, I gave ''free'' a trial run a couple times:  sales went down.  I give a lot of credit to my regular customers - they can add and they know shipping is not truly free.

So... while it may fit some categories - it was apparent it did not work for mine so I won't be making any changes.

There have been studies done that have proven many times that buyers like Free Shipping.  I as many of you out there have disagreed from the beginning what the program is called as it is misleading.  I think most of us would feel better if it was called Shipping Included.

While the DSR for shipping costs will no longer count in the eval, that doesn't mean that offering FS has no value anymore.

I've always been of the opinion that each seller has to evaluate the products they sell to see if they are suitable for FS.  Not all products are.  But I think it is a decision each seller has to make for themselves.

For me, I have many kinds of products I sell, but I have two major categories.  In one I do offer FS as it works very well with those products, but the other I do not offer it as it doesn't work well for them.

When you are trying to decide what to do, remember that even though you will no longer be eval'd on that DSR, FS does give you a so called boost in the searches.  I personally don't think that is a reason to keep it, but if that is important to you, you should consider it.

Shipping primarily furniture, no. We don't do free shipping.

We don't get a TSR discount nor do we care. Most of our sales recently have been either on Etsy or off-ebay.

The answer? I will change nothing...NO free shipping and I could give a rats behind about Ebay OR its policy changes. I long ago jumped off the TRS bandwagon. Now I quietly do my thing. I changed my handling to 3 days but I ship fast (usually within 24 hours)-I try not to list items that sell for less than $100 as those people will kill you....Oh I forgot to mention-I rarely bother listing on Ebay now. Things sell better, faster, for better prices, better profits and with less fuss on Ruby Lane. I throw potentially high level Asian items, cut glass and a few other things on Ebay for which there is still a market. Net result-so far almost 800 perfect 5.0 feedback. Otherwise? I watch the bloodbath from afar lol

"Free shipping" is just a game.

You have to remember that we are talking about eBay - not the second biggest ecommerce platform, but eBay the second biggest thief on the internet.

In my estimation, charging FVFs on shipping and getting sellers to give it for free are intertwined.

Knowing that eBay are crooks, and knowing that charging FVFs on a service they dont provide is illegal (I cant charge my buyer for something someone else does - I have no standing - you cant just make stuff up).

However if you get sellers to include it in the price then its not "shipping charges" per see and you can argue its part of the sale price in court.

We all know nothing is free ... except in eBayland. Funny how all my Amazon customers pay shipping and dont cry about it - like they do on eBay.

Now sellers can auction things like gold doubloons at 99 cents like ebay wants. With $300 shipping.

Ebay is NOT the only place on the internet that has "free shipping".  Nor were they the first to come up with it.  Shipping isn't free for anyone and that includes Amazon and countless other websites.

Fortunately as a seller you can make the choice whether to offer it or not on Ebay.  You have always had that choice.

I only speak for myself.  I choose not to worry or speculate as to what they will do next.  I have plenty to do and plenty to be concerned about now.  To add speculation to that makes no sense to me.  I could be very damaging in many ways.

You will lose either way. I had noticed no difference  in what buyers will pay. Shipping verses paid shipping. You do run the risk of low dsr by doing  paid shipping but if you keep it reasonable you can keep your dsr around 4.9  .

Here is the problem. Everyone by now should know you have selling limits that ebay secretly hides. It has been covered on a topic here before. The problem is with free shipping you will hit your sales limits for that month earlier. Because the whole item counts as the sale price.  With not free shipping only the actual selling price of the item counts toward the monthly total. And once you hit your monthly total your sales will go cold until your next monthly cycle. Lose, lose.

Ebay illegally restrains trade in a number of ways including imposing legally questionable secret selling limits for the express purpose of illegally channeling business to their "preferred" corporations.

At the very least these business killing throttling limits include

1. Monthly listing limits (restricting the number of items a seller can list).

2. Daily/Weekly/Monthly dollar volume selling limits that will ensure ebay can project nearly a guaranteed amount of revenue from your sales.

3. Daily/Weekly/Monthly limits on the number of items a seller can sell.

5. Rolling blackouts or total visibility blackouts during which period of time (usually 5-7 days) items may be either invisible to some or most buyers in various parts of the country or world or not visible at all.

6. More expensive stores get slightly more exposure in search.

The daily limits can fluctuate if a buyer purchases a watched item late in the day provided a seller's items happen to be visible in search that day.

These secret selling limits that ebay won't talk about are secret because many of them are illegal. It's no different than a rigged card game min Las Vegas; the house or their preferred customer always wins.

Sorry - obviously I can longer count.

Item #4 which I accidentally deleted is that some sellers -- depending on site volume -- get visibility everywhere for some or all parts of the month.

Ebafia pulls these marionette strings to suit their nefarious purposes rather than to help us sell.

IMO, the reason ebafia is no longer offering an incentive for "free" shipping that they KNOW the spoiled brat, entitled buyers they've created will ding us good for not offering it.

Marie ... I may be wrong here - please correct me if I am ...

YES you can choose to have or not have free shipping - but if you opt NOT TO - then you get "Cassini'd" and you get less visibility.

Why cant search just be organic, why does eBay illegally have to inject THEIR priorities into your business and its health ?

@ Ming

The incentives for having free shipping are the same today as they will be next month.  They have not changed or otherwise been removed.

@pace

Personally I don't believe that to be true.  As I've said before, I have some things I do have FS on and some I do not.  I carry a product line that just doesn't tolerate FS very well.

Sales are currently horrible on Ebay with or without FS.  But if things were running normally, I do just fine with our without it anyway.  Personally I think it depends on the product / category you sell in.

I sell in one category FS works very well in an I sell in a category it does not.  But not doing the FS in the category it doesn't work well in does not hinder my sales at all.

I just think each seller needs to do some testing over a good period of time and figure out what works best for them an their products they offer.  For me, what Ebay likes or wants on this subject does not sway me one way or the other.  I do what is best for me and what my customers seem to prefer.  It has worked for me for years and I'll stick with it.

I am in 100 percent agreement with you.  A search just should be what the person who is trying to do the search puts into the box.  Nothing less.  And they need to stop trying to tell me I meant something else.  I find that so annoying.
