Tricky, Tricky - Do Your Shopping Carefully on Amazon

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
Go to Amazon and search for a "Linksys WRT1900AC". The first one which comes up is amazon selling it themselves. ASIN B00KEK4Q5Q.

Now click on the title to see the listing. You will notice that no 3rd party sellers are shown. Amazon is getting tricky...

Now go back to the search results. You will notice there are more buying choices (15 at the time I am writing this). Click on this link.

Look at the first seller, delivered price is $241.99.

Amazon is selling it for $248.35, with prime free shipping.

A small difference, but wait! Put the one from Amazon into your cart and go to checkout. You will see they add tax, $16.76. Total to buy this unit is $265.11.

That is $23.21 or almost 10% more than the 3rd party seller.

I understand that everyone is going to be collecting tax eventually. But for now, a smart Amazon buyer will look carefully when purchasing more expensive items. And they will also look carefully for where Amazon is hiding the 3rd party sellers.

Have a great 4th.
David

No surprise here. Amazon simply uses 3P sellers as bird dogs.

They are just as deceitful and corrupt as ebay, but they do a better job of concealing it.

When I searched on it, the listing w/3rd party sellers shows first, then Amazon only listing below that. Why 2 of the exact same item, who knows.

It doesn't surprise me. Our sales have almost been cut in half since last year on there. More and more are customers are steered to buy from Amazon & away from 3rd party sellers.

Amazon is not your friend. :/

This is happening to all the selling venues. Amazon for itself and the others for whoever pays them the most or for the larger commission. I have begun shopping downtown. My little way of controlling my own little world.

I see some deception too. If you compare the two titles in search, the only difference between the two is the 2ND one says ''Frustration Free Packaging''. So that would make the 1ST one the ''Standard Packaging'' version. But no matter which one you select, you get the FFP version!

You'll also note that if you click the first one, you'll see two buttons. ''Frustration Free Packaging'' and ''Standard Packaging'' but it's defaulted to FFP. If you click the SP button, you'll then see all the 3rd party sellers. This first one should be defaulted to the SP button.

Since no seller can offer the FFP version (that's Amazon's thing), they make it impossible for a seller to show up in the listing unless someone purposely selects an inferior (?) packaging solution. Who would want Frustrating packaging?

As for sales tax, that's a different story. I've never seen an ecommerce site that showed you sales tax with the listing. So the fact that they show it later in the checkout seems normal. If the 3rd party seller is in another state, or not collecting it, then I'm that's on them.

If you can, check out the CNBC documentary "Amazon Rising", which is apparently available to watch on the web site. It will clarify much of the questions one might have about how Amazon works and how low it has sunk lately. I stopped working with that site in 2012, and I don't regret my choice one bit. You might also read a CNET article about how a 3rd party seller has sued Amazon over its suspension of his account because of a warning from Apple, which has yet to be proven to his satisfaction. Yes, Amazon chews up its partners and spits them out because it thinks it can. But more and more people are not shopping on Amazon anymore, because of these problems dealing with Amazon. You see, it's not just the affiliates, it's the customers, too, who are being inconvenienced and put off by Amazon's behavior. So my advice is, if you can find another way to sell your product you are going to save yourself a headache.

Because some things are more convenient for me to buy on Amazon as I have physical problems getting out and tracking down on my own, I buy plenty on Amazon. I also get charged sales tax routinely. But come to think of it I rarely buy from the 3PM mainly because their feedback is so bad (less than 95) or they don't sell what I want.

I sell on Amazon and the last couple of months I've had the best sales there in over ten years of selling. Partly because I am selling in a category that is not yet totally overwhelmed with product although in the last 2 years I can see more and more sellers in it. Happily most of the sellers for my niche are twits, and my listings stand out from them so that many times I get the sale instead of them. What product Amazon sells in my category is one than their only market to buy is the same one I go to at times, so I also know when they stick up the cute 'temporarily out' nonsense, they are in reality permanently out of stock! :) Yet again another boost in my favor.

And don't forget the different prices for different buyers. Sometimes I log in on another browser, not signed in, and see a different price.

Amazon is as equally sleazy as ebay. Sellers are treated like crap, and buyers not much better.

An A-z claim on Amazon is a proven method for buyers to get your merch for free. It is mail fraud enabled by Amazon. Amazon is not good for 3P sellers, the search function is not transparent. If you are successful,
Amazon will compete with you in short order. I will not buy or sell there now.
We must not support companies who do not support us.

OMG...They are breaking the consumer laws blatantly now.  This insidious company will have hell to pay if our impotent government ever wakes up.  This is a bait and switch if I ever saw one.  They are literally misleading the buyer and not to mention screwing the sellers.  I can not wait until the Sherman and Clayton acts are once again invoked on these corrupt corporations.  Americans have become too ignorant to even fight back.  15 years of hurting the consumer, small business, and our government which has been bought...is the legacy of amazon...

''But come to think of it I rarely buy from the 3PM mainly because their feedback is so bad (less than 95) or they don't sell what I want.''

Feedback would probably be higher IF feedback was left by more than 5 - 10% of the buyers.  So, feedback does not give you an accurate picture of the seller.

Also, no where is there a feedback rating system for Amazon. Wonder what it would be??
