Could eBay Promotions Tool Increase Sellers' Risk of Defects?

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
(Re eBay's new Promotions tool that lets sellers give discounts to encourage buyers to purchase additional items.)

Good Grief, got to love this.

Don't be me wrong, as a seller I LOVE buyers that buy multiple items. But with eBay, the more multiple item purchases you have the higher risk you have of getting your account in trouble. If you have a buyer that purchases 10 items, and then when they leave feedback, they decide you did not describe it as well as you would have liked for whatever reason you have and they rate you as a 3 in description. That is 10 (TEN) defects. One for each transaction.

Just to illustrate how lop sided this is. Let's look at this same situation except the buyer doesn't pay. The seller files 10 UIDs. Buyer never pays. The seller closes those 10 transactions for non-payment. The buyer received 1 (ONE) unpaid strike.
M.

Apparently I've been in the beta-test. I thought everyone had the option. I don't know how long I've had it but it has been awhile since I set my original promotion.

I chose to use the buy $xx.00 and shipping is free. I've had a couple buyers use it but my threshold amount was higher then. I just reduced it starting in June, when summer is a bit slower - so we'll see if there are more buyers that use it.

eBay does put a bar in your listing that promotes a few of ''seller's other items'', with a window at the side to show how much additional dollar amount a buyer would need to buy to get free shipping. (imo, better MY stuff than someone else's getting promoted!)

So far I like the option and have no complaints.

Long before the ''defects'' loomed over us, I frequently sold multiple purchases. Sometime over a year ago a multiple purchase buyer played the DSR game on 3 purchases. I just think it has always been a risk - fortunately a low one with the vast majority of my multiple purchasers being great customers!

I've been dealing with this for a while, though I didn't know the non-payer only received one strike.  I sell DVDs, and offer a flat rate maximum shipping amount, so large orders aren't uncommon.  My feedback rating can only get one ding, but the DSRs are currently killing me because of a small number of people.

We all know people are sure to complain if there's a problem, but may say nothing if there isn't.  The thousands of transactions with no feedback aren't assumed to be positive though. It's as though they never happened.

To add to it, opening cases when one buyer doesn't pay for a lot is time consuming.  I also recently learned that if the buyer marks the item as payment sent, but never pays, the non paid cases don't open automatically if you have that setup, so, you don't get paid, but your eBay fees are still applied.

Getting customers to buy multiple items is risky.  If you can, it's better to offer different quantities of the same item if it applies.  (For me, it doesn't because buyers choose different titles. )

I tried the new promotions tool yesterday electing to chose the % off feature. I was already running a sale so it was an easy thing to do. I followed all of the instructions and created the campaign. The system showed me the graphics that would appear in my listings and I started the event. It shows that it is running, but my listings look no different and I see no evidence of this app working.
Just another BS thing that ebay released that does not work.
Typical.

 This is what their new defect rate is all about, reducing the number of TRS (20%) discounts they give out! For over three years now, I have been a (TRS) Power Seller with 100% feedback. As soon as eBay announced their new 'Seller Update" I got Dinged by four buyers who made purchases all within 10-Days of each other!

 But mind you not one of these buyers file any cases or contacted me. They did not leave me negative feedback, but neutrals. Each one left a nonsense remark like, "I wouldn't buy it again," "didn't impress me," "kind of small" and "wife didn't like it!" I called eBay's sad excuse for customer support, spent over an hour on the phone and was told they would forward the request to their feedback review people. Needless to say, now that neutrals count towards your defect rate, I lost my (TRS) standing. Which in turn killed my place in their "Best Match" search and also, my 20% discount!

 As I said this was at the end of February, so my next two review periods were dinged! I lost a large percentage of sales and eBay made a lot less money, me to! But just after the second billing cycle I got an email from eBay saying they took steps to protect my seller's account and removed some bad feedback! Which was fine, but the damage had already been done.

 The first hit wasn't that bad as I had a couple of weeks with my (TRS) status. But the next full month I saw my sales drop from $2000.00 a month down to just below $1000.00 sales. Now with removing those ding, they have restored my (TRS) standing. But still it is a very sad day at eBay! With thousands of sales, Power Seller, with 100% positive feedback and my (TRS) stand is destroyed in a matter of days! Well, always hope for the best. But I don't see things getting any better with there new and improved schemes!!!

First thing I thought when I read about this new promo features

* Listing fees have increased
* Selling fees have increased
* Selling fee on shipping costs
* A lot of sellers lose their 20% discount

So squeezed everywhere. How the hell does Ebay expect to give any furher discounts knowing prices have never been lower.

It's completely rediculous. If you want to give a 20% discount maintain your Ebayprices and offer a 20% discount code to your customers to use on your website.

gutspiller asks: "How the hell does Ebay expect to give any furher discounts knowing prices have never been lower."

Simple, eBay knows sellers will use the feature to "jack and whack" prices in a desperate attempt to appear to be offering value.

On my account I had 5 never received item ( now to be called defects) for buyers who did not pay. One Rep removed them, but I notice Ebay is still counting the low score in my NOT RECEIVED column. So non-paying buyers may get some sellers booted.

Just another way for ebay to be dishonest and evil.  No matter WHAT a seller does it is WRONG and DEFECTIVE--and no matter WHAT a buyer does they are treated like angels.

Where ELSE would we ALLOW ourselves to be treated in OFFICIAL POLICY as if we are DEFECTIVE???
