eBay Overcharges Sellers on Orders with Combined Shipping?

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
Are you aware that since eBay has started charging commission on the postage charge there is a problem when a sellers does combined postage?

If a seller sells 2 items to the same buyer that each have a postage cost of say $6.95 and the seller does a combined postage invoice so the buyer only pays the one postage cost of $6.95: eBay is taking commission on the total postage of $13.90 - not the $6.95 that was actually charged.

Yet again another example of eBay's ill-conceived ideas.
Regards
Peter

Or maybe another example of eBay's greed and complete indifference to sellers.

And the fact that eBay charges their sellers a 10% fee on something that is an expense to the seller is criminal.  Let alone double charging it.

This is just another tale of how the expert how liars and thieves who run ebay

After calling the FTC call, Customer Service and demand a refund.

Ebay said this from the beginning.  Right when the started applying this fee.  It will charge the fee on the amount the buyer PAYS.  So if the buyer overpays and you refund, you have no way to file to get the addition fee paid back.  You can call to get it, but it is so time consuming.

And yes it is by design.  All these questions were raised when they announced this fee.  Ebay made it known that they charge the fee at the time of payment period.

They NEVER LIED about this particular subject.  They were honest about their greed up front.

PayPal automatically refunds fees associated with partial refunds.

The fact that eBay forces sellers to go through the eBay customer service sausage grinder in order to achieve fair treatment is a testament to management's complete disconnect from everything fair, honest, reasonable and ethical.

In the name of good customer service, there are many reasons sellera may choose to partially refund buyers.

eBay always claims they want sellers to offer outstanding customer service... however, if in the pursuit of pleasing buyers, a seller chooses to issue a partial refund, eBay refuses to offer sellers a streamlined process for receiving fee credits for those refunds.

Speaking out of both sides of their mouth, eBay holds sellers to incredibly high standards of customer service while offering their sellers less than the bare minimum in return.

By intentionally under staffing customer service eBay intentionally inflates wait times to reach one of their customer service Peggys knowing that the vast majority of sellers will give up on their refund requests when faced with longer wait times.

eBay can and should streamline the credit process for final refunds exactly as they do on the PayPal side of the transaction. Their failure to do so in the past as well as in the future serves only to amplify management's lack of business ethics.

Ebay relies on the average seller not noticing the overcharge.  And I'm SURE the majority do not notice.

Or maybe simply another example of eBay's incompetent database programming; notwithstanding that any incompetence invariably benefits eBay and not the reverse ...

Marie,

"... the buyer only pays the one postage cost of $6.95: eBay is taking commission on the total postage of $13.90 - not the $6.95 that was actually charged."

This has nothing to do with a "refund" of postage; it was never paid by the buyer in the first place ...

@Phil

That isn't how Ebay calculates the fees on shipping.

The FVF on Shipping is calculated AT THE TIME OF PAYMENT.  Not before.  Not even if the seller invoices the buyer.  It is only calculated on the actual amount paid by the buyer.

If the buyer paid 6.95 for S&H, then the FVF was based on that.

As I read the OP's letter, he is saying that eBay did charge him a FVF on the $13.90, otherwise what is the point of the letter? ...

Ebay doesn't charge a FVF fee on your combined shipping. It takes each individual domestic shipping charge in the listing and adds them up. It stinks, but it's nothing new.

No they don't.  The OP is mistaken.

From Ebay policy:

Final value fee: When your item sells, you're charged a final value fee that's based on what the buyer PAID—including shipping and handling costs—minus any sales tax. If your item doesn't sell, you won't be charged.

Well, maybe if you feel guilty and must lower and combine shipping, you shouldn't combine it so vigorously.  Just charge enough that your trouble to refund the extra is paid for, and your lost ebay vig are paid for.

So if someone buys two items and they are $6.50 each shipping, and you feel you just must combine shipping, give a $3 refund.

You have to go into paypal and refund, right?  There is a cost to that.  You have to answer the emails from the buyer, there's a cost to that.

Businesses always have costs, you don't want to subsidize your business with your personal money, do you?  Nope.

Don't generally have any thing I need to combine--sigh---but I would be interested in a more concrete example of this JUST IN CASE I should run into this dire circumstance.

INA---Any chance you could contact the OP and get a screen shot and expunge the personal so WE could see this with our very own eyes???

I am sure we would all be very interested to know what to look for.

Comet, it makes sense, if the buyer buys two or more items and pays the separate shipping on each at that time, and then the seller feels they have to refund some, well, ebay's vig on the shipping has already been charged.

There should be a way to refund so the vig gets refunded too like Paypal does. But not with ebay.

You can call on the phone but that seems like such a grind....

This has been an issue for as long as I can remember. I also get charged for the fee for international postage cost, even though ALL of my listings has free shipping as the first option.. AND I get charged the fee for the postage cost when buyers choose priority on a listing with free shipping as the first option.
These are all supposed to be fee free as my first shipping option is always free to US buyers.
I also noticed charges for revisions on listings when I was only removing the require immediate pay option.
Doesn't surprise me at all to see yet another "glitch".
Anyone else notice that the "search description" box isalso missing from your store? Huge set back when buyers are looking for something specific.  All buyers see when searching in my store is what words are in the title, a lot of good that does!
Why bother with the description anyway? The buyers aren't seeing half of what they are killing for if the descriptions aren't being searched and half if the pictures don't upload correctly either... Just a few more known and uncorrected issues to deal with :(

People, read the OP! The OP did a combined invoice to cover the correct postage; no refund was involved; and yet he claims he was charged FVF on the two lots of postage instead of the single amount ...

The OP sounds Australian judging by the $6.95 postage figure.
eBay AU only started charging fees for postage on 6 May so first invoices will be seen in a day or two.
