eBay Disclaimer - Who Knows Where Your Listing Will Appear

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
Look at the disclaimer I just got when I listed an item!!!

"Where your listing appears in search and browse results may be based on certain factors including listing format, title, bidding activity, end time, keywords, price and shipping cost, feedback, and detailed seller ratings. You can read more about where your listings appear in search and browse results in eBay's Help Pages."

I think any disclosure respecting this subject has got to be too little too late! Maybe this is old, but I think it's the first time I got it.

Actually, last year eBay issued the caveat to sellers that their listings may not be seen at all regardless of the sort method selected in search.

This admission of guilt proved devastating to the eBay board apologists who were fond of handing out conspiratorial tin foil hats to sellers having the audacity to publicly complain about "invisible listings."

eBay tells sellers up front their listings may be buried, invisible or otherwise not seen by buyers and yet management wonders why their GMV growth lags well behind the rest of the ecommerce industry.

Can buyers purchase what they can not see?

Should it take an MBA degree to ponder this?

Is a thinking day necessary to ponder the problem and contemplate a solution?

I got it!!!! Blame the sellers for eBay's poor marketplace performance. Better yet....punish the Top Rated Sellers because regardless of their performance, they must be part of the problem.

Meg once said a monkey could drive the eBay bus.... Just our luck, instead of monkeys, the eBay bus is driven by MBA's, a breed that has proven time and again they are dumber than monkey's. I would take my chances with that monkey over the current disconnected and disinterested management team any day.

The order for which listings show up....

(Cassini was developed to give eBay this specific  power, NOT to improve search function(s)) ANYONE who believes otherwise should be checked for a pulse!

Heres the general order:

1) Manufactorers Platinum/Premium stores
2) GSI Commerce Partners
3) Chinese Mega Sellers
4) Platinum "Buying Group Sellers"
5) Platinum NON Buying Group Sellers
6) TRSP Platinum sellers who behave (read no VERO issues)
7) TRSP Gold Sellers who behave (Read no VERO issues)
7) TRSP Gold level sellers with 10+ yr history of sales)
8) TRSP Silver level Sellers
9) Non TRSP sellers with no issues (Vero or otherwise)
10) everyone else

Unlike Amazons buy box and its formula, eBay directs specific searches to specific buyers (they admitted to doing so 2 yrs ago at CES in Vegas)

Of course the magic DRSs also play a factor in placement as oes "how much trouble you give eBay as a seller who complains all the time"

Lastly - eBay sets monthly selling limits on most small to mid level sellers - so you can never reach your true selling potential. Its another illegal manipulation that eBay does. You can work hard and obey all the rules, but eBay will STILL set a limit that you cant cross - in some weird effort to punish you. Weird ... you'd again think eBay would want their best sellers to succeed .... but this is eBay where nothing is at is seems!

Frustrated, peeved, and annoyed "Sellers" do not make great "Buyers".

If Sellers are frustrated with the system they "use" to Sell, they will not stick around to shop.

This is an easy explanation why sellers are or already left ebay.
This is the main reason I left ebay,  both buying and selling.
How many others have left????

What a great way to run a company ! (into the ground)

@Oldguy
Have you just left eBay or left online selling? I'm constant;y trying/looking at other venues. I'm tired of having 1 view (I LOOKED AT IT!) on an item that in the past would have commanded 200 views. I have many listings that the count didn't change since the first day they went up...I guess ebay allowed it to be displayed for 1 out of 10 days.I ran a search..I ran it every which way - and it doesn't come up. I called customer service and of course they searched by number and up it came. I don't search for items by numbers, do you? LOL. I was reminded of the user agreement. BTW, I am a TRS, free S&H..another lie they want us to believe. ''become a TRS & offer free shipping and your listings will get priority in best match''. Right! MY QUESTION: WHERE DO THE ONE WHO ARE LEAVING GO?? I WILL BE THE FIRST TO BAIL & FOLLOW.

OP, it’s not “too little too late”; such an advice has been issued by eBay only to defend against anticipated legal action against them. Obviously, their lawyers have advised them that they should spell out—as ambiguously as possible—what service they are supplying and what you are effectively agreeing to accept every time you log in. eBay’s resort to free listing is a continuing sign of desperation; what commercial enterprise really gives anything away for “free”? Certainly not eBay …

Regardless, the reality is, eBay is giving preferential treatment in search to their preferred merchants only, in a desperate attempt to keep happy those naive “major retailers, manufacturers, brands” that they have managed to entice onboard the rusting old scow; everyone else will get only a few crumbs, if they are lucky. In the meantime, stop kidding yourselves, if you are not already one of the “eBay-preferred” that are still doing quite well on ebay, is it unlikely now that you ever will …

The fact is, as eBay itself has stated, eBay wants to be the Westfield Mall of online commerce, servicing only those few thousands of major “brands” of the world; clearly, they are totally disinterested in what they obviously see as the “complications” of dealing with tens of thousands of small, and sometimes unprofessional, sellers—notwithstanding their obvious desperation in periodically trying to again attract sellers to sell household junk at auction …

Undoubtedly, the water is now lapping at the gunwales; the only question now is, are you prepared, are you wearing your lifejacket 24/7 …

eBay Inc, where the incompetent mingle with the malevolent and the criminal … http://bit.ly/11F2eas

@pace306

I assure you I have a pulse and I don't agree with your outlook on how people / sellers are ranked in the searches.  I am unsure as to why you feel if I or we don't agree with you we don't have a pulse.  There are many ways to look at this subject.  It is not as simple as you make it appear to be.  It is far more complex.

There have been many times when I've researched some of my listings that non TRS sellers have appeared well above my listings.  I am TRS Plus.

I'm unsure why the medium level store [premium] would rank # 1 on your list.  What happened to those that have an Anchor Store, the highest level of store you can subscribe too.  Certainly doesn't mean you are all that important, I'm just saying it is the highest level store currently available.  I also have an anchor store.

I honestly have no idea how Ebay structures the searches, it appears to me that it is always in a state of flux and ever changing.

''Wheres Waldo ?''

Actually it's much worse than that.

A person with a little skill, average powers of observation, and sufficient time can actually find Waldo.

In eBay's admission, Waldo may not even be printed on the puzzle page.

Marie - glad your alive :) but it doesnt change anything visa via what I wrote.

Unless theres a specific reason your listings are not in the order I mentioned, they WILL be in that order.

Cassini was created JUST for that reason. Ask anyone who uses it, knows about it in depth - its not ANY BETTER in searching for anything then Voyager was. ALL it does is give eBay the ability to control how search works, ie MANIPULATION.

You could (if you dont believe me - and I dont think you do) read the TWICE article written about eBay/CES and a gentleman named Noah Hershman.

He was the head of the largest electronics buying group in the USA. He was hired by eBay 2 yrs ago to help get his buying group members to sell on eBay (since begging the manufactorers directly at CES didnt work)(it actually backfired). The article QUITE CLEARLY states that buying group members who come to eBay under Mr Hershman will have their listings SHOWN FIRST.

I know sometimes you think I make stuff up - but black n white articles dont lie.

Im hardly nieve or foolish either. My various legal entanglements with eBay, trying to stop them from their dirty deeds, allows me to be in the position to know some of the nasty things they do.

eBay doesnt work in a vacume and neither do I. eBay policies and procedures are done to help their bottom line. %99 of the time they border on being illegal -JUST skirting the margins by "this much".

Just like eBays rolling blackouts, just like eBays artificial selling limits, just like eBays removal of negatives for certain sellers, not to mention all the other nefarious things they do - this too is quasi illegal - and there isnt much sellers can do. Without concrete inside server data, any court trip would be short lived.

Since eBay would NEVER provide that data - all this is a moot point. That DOESNT however make it fantasy, its just not provable in court (ie not be able to be stopped ly legal action)

Marie ... if you disagree with the list - ie the placement of certain groups - thats all fine.

The point wasnt to be concrete about the listing placement - but that listings arent set up in a vacume.

Just being a TRSP (which I am as well - with a 99.8% rating) doesnt mean you will always be one of the first shown.

Its not as complex as you beleive - who goes first is who eBay wants to aka benefits the most from. Its not about who has the best ratings, not who owes the least in fees, not who lives in specific places. Its simply about who eBay makes the most $$$$ from (unlike Amazon ... FBA then %2 better price if you have the best ratings).

best :) regards

Well, eBay's manipulative market behavior will go on unimpeded until someone DOES figure out what the hell they are doing and gets some interest at the federal level. eBay demonstrates that there are unlawful combinations and price-fixing in a whole new context.
