eBay Displays Unrealistic Delivery Times to Detriment of Sellers

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
eBay tricks buyers in shipping time when seller clearly marks Economy Shipping (1-10 business days). I set up all my items at eBay to be Economy shipping and offer this for free shipping.

eBay tells buyer: ship time to be: Shipping U S Economy Shipping - Estimated within 3 business days

Three days is not 1-10 business days. All sellers will be at eBay hands when it comes to shipping time and buyer give sellers 1,2,3 rating which eBay will give sellers default and defect rating.

Please leave my name out of this email.
Thank you.
R.

It's been a long time since I've bothered to examine an eBay product listing, so I may be recalling incorrectly... but is the estimated time that's shown on the listing based on the seller's actual (average) delivery time?

In other words: even when the seller indicates 10-days and economy shipping... does eBay calculate an estimated delivery time based on the tracking data that the seller has been uploading over time?

Regardless of the explanation, it certainly doesn't give sellers the opportunity to leave some wiggle-room for themselves. (This is something that I *always* did!)

In fact, it was something that Griff had recommended LONG ago. He used to always say ''under-promise and over-deliver''. So I did!

I'd promise 10-day delivery. Then provide 3-day delivery, and my customers were (ahem) ''delighted'' with the shipping speed, even though I had done nothing particularly out of the ordinary.

But by promising 10-day delivery, I had myself covered in the event of a family emergency... or an extended power outage... or personal illness, etc.

If my guess is correct, this is just one MORE way for eBay to manipulate and control sellers. Taking away flexibility, and making it HARDER, not easier, to ''delight'' buyers.

It almost looks as though eBay is INTENTIONALLY doing things that set-up sellers for failure. What gives?

I had a customer complaint about that too. eBay promised with standard shipping - 3 days - from NY to Houston TX - INCLUDING A WEEKEND.

I gently explained to the customer that it was just an ESTIMATE and that unless its priority mail or express mail - those times are IMPOSIBLE.

Luckily he saw it my way .... but luck runs out eventually.

Stupid is as stupid does - THAT is todays eBay.

Is eBay aware that the USPS is at its worst in decades? They are charging for scanning, returning flat rate packages because they are not flat enough and sending first class and priority packages via ground shipping ( that is why they are also not scanning packages until they are at the point of delivery many days later ).

Some geniuses at eBay may think that this will help eBay but its not about eBay playing another trick on sellers to go below standards and lose discounts, it is about customers leaving eBay because as a whole, the USPS is killing eBay, even more damage the the CEO, the USPS is killing eBay and a lot of small sellers.

It is not just about Unrealistic Delivery Times.

I have this all the time too. I had a buyer pay for an item 3/22 (Saturday) at 7:30pm. It was to go first class mail which eBay says is 2-5 days. I have a 1-day handling time, yet the info displayed to the buyer was estimated delivery of 3/25-3/27 (Tuesday thru Thursday). On Tuesday the 25th, the buyer emailed asking where his item was! I obviously could not ship it until Monday and it was first class. So even if I had same day shipping this is not realistic. Oh well, that is eBay trying to compete with Amazon and saying to buyers they will get it faster or as fast as PRIME and yes it makes buyers leave low star ratings which helps eBay not have to pay us our discounts. It is what it is.

We are in the process of assembling/compiling what people are saying nationwide about their experiences at eBay. Two books are being created to be released in the near future both as online ebooks and possibly in print media as well. THE EBAY PAPERS Death and Destruction of an American Economic Juggernaut. "Book of Gideon" working title "What You Don't Know About Ebay Will Hurt You" exposing malfeasance and the abuse of sellers by the world's second largest online electronic selling platform. The author of the two books, Rich Vernadeau, is himself a former ebay seller and the founder of two Facebook groups (Former Ebay Sellers and Former Ebay Sellers 2 Open Forum). All submissions from former and current ebay sellers, users in their own words. Stories may also be submitted to (and will be used from) the OPEN FB group Former Ebay Sellers 2 Open Forum. You may submit your stories/experiences there.

I agree with R's letter....this is another egregious example of eBay knocking itself out to provide a Better Buyer Experience at the cost of its own customer base: eBay sellers!

Lesson to be learned here? Post tracking same or next day order is received, but don't add it to the mailstream for 3-4 days so eBay doesn't predict and display quick shipping and seller has SOME leeway.

Only in eBay-land.

For the life of me I cannot understand why these sellers stay with Ebay. Do they think in their wildest dreams that it is going to get any better. NOT! I left Ebay several years ago and I must say I do not miss it. It was just starting to go bad then. The gruesome things they do to their sellers is beyond belief. I would never sell there again.

With all the big box stores at ebay now they are pushing the small sellers out, I do my best to ship next day but I am only me, I have no employees and do have a life other than ebay. There's not a damn thing we can do other than go elsewhere to sell our items, ebay knows its the only game in town. I was selling on Amazon for a few months but sold more on ebay. I tried on ebid with not one sale, ecrater, nothing and I sell a specialty item. You have some spurts of sales then nothing. We keep receiving more rules and now the new feedback rules with defectives or what ever that word was called. God we sellers get more and more rules and its not for our benefit, though they are trying to make it appear that way, that's my opinion and ebay is all BS, BS-ing their sellers. Small business and small sellers are hurting, you would think ebay would be happy with their profits, no, so they take on the big business doing listings or ads. Big business is making some of these rules, Target etc. The cards were slowly being stacked against small sellers. I don't know why in the H these big box stores do not realize if small sellers are not selling they have no funds to buy in their stores. Its pure greed and it has taken its toll on our country and people.

Ebay is still trying to force us to use a USPS "tracking"  system on OVERSEAS sales.

This is absurd since USPS cannot track items once they LEAVE the US.  They might be trackable to the CUSTOMS port---but after that---nope.

They want me to charge buyers $28 USD for these 4 OUNCE packages.

They CLAIM that if I don't have this and CAN'T prove delivery the buyer can claim they never got the item.  So---I take every opportunity to steer these buyers OFF ebay.  If they INSIST on doing an ebay purchase---they get charged the $28 and I am STILL VULNERABLE since USPS can't track the item!

Does this make ANY sense????

The three days is probably the shipping time for within your own zip code!

Did you try changing to a zip code that is on the opposite coast?

This information may be inaccurate but I wanted to throw this out there. I have intermittent issues with the sorting center in my Chicagoland region as many of you know, and orders can sit in Forest Park, IL for days (up to 5-6) before departing depending on how backed up the center is.  I called Ebay and spoke to 2 different reps who told me as long as tracking is updated via Ebay shipping within 1 day handling time (my setting) the automatic 5 stars will still be given.  This is what I was told but is hard to believe given all the other rules in place.  Would like to know if anyone else was given this same information.  No where does it specify this in the spring release.

I do get international tracking on international first class packages now through usps.com.  It is still a little hit and miss though - sometimes you have no tracking once it leaves the US sorting center until it delivers, but I am getting tracking now that does tell me when it is delivered & sometimes it tells me when it arrives at the sorting center in UK for example.

We called eBay out on this at channel advisor catalyst a year ago. I asked them '' why do you set sellers up to fail'' .  This listing 390703494665 is set up with 5 day handling time and economy shipping, they show the buyer they will receive it in less than the stated handling time.

eBay clearly operates on the theory of over promise and under deliver or better stated sell as much as you can as fast as you can and if you piss off a few buyers along the way so be it.

When we get buyer complaints we throw it back at eBay .. '' I am sorry eBay states that and its equally frustrating to us''. We also have a disclaimer in all of our listings that says '' fast n free is an overly optimistic estimate of ebay, please refer to our stated delivery times''.

I have been selling on ebay for almost 10 years. Have seen lots of changes.  I do not have shipping charges on my site, everything is free shipping but I just build it into the price.  People love free shipping.  I always ship USPS and sometimes hubby goes 4 times in a day to get everything out. I do very well on ebay.  I also sell on ecrater  (nothing really), Bonanza (very little).  Ebay is my bread and butter.  I tried Amazon but my product needs codes.  Lady told me to scroll through the listings to see if I could find something close to what I was selling for a code Ha! try that on 500,000 listings - joke.  What other avenues are there where you can sell over $100,000 a year?  Any ideas??
Have not had problem one with USPS. They are very fast on my end. One lady wrote that she thought I lived next door she got it so fast. I have a one day turn around and so far it is working well. I feel if people are good enough to pay for it right away, why can't I ship it right away!! Works good for me so far without problems.

eBay offers Socialism, via micro management, in eCommerce as an advanced stage of the Seller and Buyer experience, as an improvement over barbarous eBay of prior." But would the change to socialism in eBay eCommerce improve the Buyer experience? Does it facilitate more successful sales via micro management? Is it inevitable that a free society of Sellers move along the Socialist path via micro management?

It is not the issues that are arising from eBay policy of micro management that is of concern – but the style of management of an entire eCommerce platform and the impact on the freedom of the Sellers to excel on their own merits.

I've noticed in the last few months that the majority of our orders are from neighboring states.  Coincidence?  I don't think so.  I'm sure that this is programmed in somehow by eBay in an attempt to meet these unrealistic delivery times.

Readheaded Lady says "People love free shipping."

There is no such thing as free shipping. You just said yourself that you built the shipping into the price, therefore you are charging for shipping.

No disrespect intended, and I get the whole gimmick them that eBay promotes, but there is no such thing as free shipping.

Readheaded Lady says ''People love free shipping.''

That's because sellers offering ''free'' shipping are lazy. They do not want to take the time to learn how to properly set up shipping discount rules. Our stores pricing plus shipping is the same as the guys w/''free'' shipping...and often times is lower than our competitors. Especially when buying multiple items.
