Google Pays No Commission for Ad on eBay Listing Page

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
I thought it was interesting, and disturbing, that an AdChoice ad for Chromecast on an eBay listing showed a BUY NOW button as part of the ad, and sure enough if you click it you land on a Google page to buy it now.

Such a deal for Google and no FVF.
Snippet of ad attached.

Favoritism toward Donahoe's "big box" and other corporations is how business is done at eBay. I thought everybody already knew that.

The best is when Ebay shows your buyer where to find the exact same item off of Ebay.  Love I am paying fees to list my items and they are sending my customers elsewhere.

I sell collectible Brand name cups and saucers on my own site  Kettle Cove Discoveries and on eBay as Book Stop & Things. On eBay, there are ads for Replacements - a big seller of these collectibles and clicking on it takes you directly to Replacements site. Interesting the eBay would send a customer to a big seller's own website rather than sell my item. Sheeesh!!!!

Wonder if eBay will let me run ads that take the customer to my own website. Not likely

How do you know they don't pay a fee to Ebay?

There is no ebay fee, but they obviously pay for the ad.  Ebay doesn't run those ads for free.

@steevo

Is it published somewhere that there is no fee?  I'm just curious.  How do you know there is no fee?

@STEEVO---

Do you work for either GOOGLE or EBAY in the accounting dept to KNOW that there is in fact NO FEE paid for these ads???

Not that I am in favor of them---completely the opposite!!!!!--but please defend your work.

Is that what they call "omnichannel"? You don't hear that term as much as disruptive innovation or turnaround. ebay is driving the future of ecommerce. Right to the competition. Once they have that gizmo, they may never see or hear of ebay again.

That doesn't look like the result of Machine Learning.  Likely it was organically produced. During Thinking Day.

Brilliant!

Whether Google pays or not to irrelevant to the most egregious aspect of this arrangement which is that FTC regulations dictate that what's offered to one must be offered to all.

Call the FTC at (877) 382-4357 (toll free) and complain.

@ming

It my be irrelevant to you, but to others it might be.

While it has been asked how the Op and others know ebay is not charging for this service, no one has posted an answer.  So are the assuming or just don't want to post the information?

"FTC regulations dictate that what's offered to one must be offered to all."  What is it that you are referring to?  The little advertising boxes?  Fees?  Or something else?

Sad that it takes a Google search, and not eBay.com help, to find the following.

Advertising with classified ads on eBay and eBay Classifieds
http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/classified.html
''It
's
free to use eBay Classifieds. Fees on eBay.com vary depending on the category and listing duration. For specific fee and category information, see fees for Classified Ads on eBay.com.''

With a link leading to ''Fees for Classified Ads.''

Fees for Classified Ads
http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/adformatfees.html
''When you list an item, service, or property on eBay using the Classified Ad format, you're charged an insertion fee according to the following table. You won't be charged a final value fee or notice fee for this type of format.''

A ''30-day listing'' is ''$9.95.''

Used this years back.  A very effective means of using eBay.com to direct traffic off eBay.com.

Don't know how eBay INC ads are now, but Google must find them worth using their 'petty cash fund'.

Now I could be wrong, but aren't "classified" ads different from the banner ads?

But when you get right down to it, every ad, in its greasy little heart, wants you to buy it. It's just that most of them aren't as bold as to put in a Buy Now button.

There's also some chance that eBay is more aware of the AdChoice window in general than of the content that AdChoice puts in it. Some of their ads have some really sleazy, dubious content that I wouldn't click on in a million years. Before their disastrous web page redesign, MSNBC.com had a major infestation of them at the bottom of their home page. Having just one barging into an eBay listing is, um, progress, of a sort.
