eBay Feedback Is Skewed Thanks to Fewer Buyers Leaving Positives

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
As a 17-year seller with about 15 thousand feedback, I am seeing that MANY less eBay buyers are leaving positive feedback (they probably have realized it's pointless).

This is going to hurt sellers as unhappy buyers will still leave negative feedback and there will be far fewer positives to offset it.

I think I told you about receiving $55 worth of free shipping of TP/paper towels etc. from Amazon Prime. I back calculated - FedEx ground would have charged me $77 just to ship the box!!

Regards,
Martin

Ebay realizes this as well which is one way they're passively exterminating more and more small sellers.

When they came up with this star system, ebay knew full well feedback was on the decline and also knew that lunatic buyers are far, far more apt to leave bad feedback/low stars and happy buyers are more apt to leave no feedback.

Once again only knows how to eliminate sellers based on a less than perfect measurement system.

Some of the worst, most dishonest sellers in the categories I sell in are still Top Rated Sellers while absolutely minor things have disqualified good sellers.

But some hot shot consultant or one of ebay's wet behind the ears junior managers who texts during meetings -- neither of whom has ever sold professional if at all and knows less than nothing about retail sales -- devise schemes to ruin good sellers but that fail to detect some of the worst.

Some system, ebay.

Rich Matsuura, what are you going to do about REALLY protecting sellers?

Or are you just an another anti seller algorithm hiding inside a set of skin?

it's actually a worse problem on amazon.  i'd say i get about 10% of my buyers leaving feedback which means the very rare negative can still be a killer.

AS a seller I am almost happy when I get no FB---at least it is NOT negative.

As a buyer I leave FB --almost always Positive---as soon as I can.

Leaving FB as a seller is an issue if the buyer has not left Pos for me---I have had a few times where it seems the buyer has WAITED with no word to me to  leave FB for THEM and then leave Neg and start to complain.  I hate to not leave FB for someone who might just not realize the importance--or just be lazy---but I can't risk it.

And ebay of course KNOWS this and does--nothing.

Wonder what their end game is?

You described only half of the problem, check your dashboard and you will see that more buyers are leaving positives with negative DSRs, without any reason, frustration in their lives, unfair comparison with Amazon Prime 2 day delivery, stress, who knows. But the worst part is to pick up the phone and try to ask eBay staff to help you check these feedbacks, Forget it, the new outsourced staff is always in transfer mode, they transfer you from one place to another after they put you on hold for 10 minutes at a time to look as if they are working.

The report a buyer feature never ever works, you will have 2 feedbacks removed every 10 years if lucky, again, a job that eBay has given to outsourced staff, to lift selling limitations I tried to contact someone and after 25 transfers and calls, the outsourced guy had such a bad accent that I could not understand his 5 million dollar questions, I honestly try, because I wasn't able to understand him, instead of lifting selling limits, he put me on 5 items a month.

eBay has no clue what these good for nothing staff are doing, I hope someone who manages hiring sees this and checks what they do, eBay makes plenty of cash and gives sellers a lot of hard time to be giving us zombies as support, on top of all the issues we already have to face with angry buyers and unfair feedback. I wish someone starts a petition to ask eBay to hire better staff.

Ina, may I please suggest an article to ask fellow sellers about their experience with the new outsourced staff? How long they are on the phone, how many times are transferred ( to wrong department ) and how many calls it takes to get an issue resolved? Related to this article, is one of the things we sellers want fixed sometimes but impossible to solve with the kind of staff "serving" us. Thank you!

well this is the point isn't it

People sho never run a business telling people how to run their business but they likely have a degree in something that has nothing to do with commerce either but qualifies them for a big fat salary

I stopped leaving FB for buyers as I feel it is a waste of time (and it is). I will do so if a customer asks me.  Sellers are not required to leave FB for a buyer on Amazon, which makes sense.  What do you say ''Great buyer -- they paid!''

Feedback has no bearing on anything so why are we worried about it ?

Block them.  I had a bidder constantly buying from me but never leaving any feedback whatsoever.  Finally blocked him.

I used to leave feedback for buyers as soon as I shipped on item.  Then I had a rash of buyers who got ''nasty'' and demanding after I left feedback.  My new policy is that I will leave feedback for them if/when they leave feedback for me.  Have not had any more demands or issues.

Doboy - unless eBay has changed their feedback counting, only the first feedback from a buyer is counted in your total.  Subsequent feedback is not counted.  Really - you block a repeat buyer because he didn't leave feedback??  Really????

@thehost

I certainly agree with the comments regarding the FB getting very skewed and out of balance with the reality of how a seller is truly functioning.

I just wanted to clarify a little something.  While the types of FB are divided by the FB received to acquire the respective percentages, the same is NOT true on DSRs.

DSRs are calculated using total transactions for the period.  You can see this on your dashboard too.  So that can be very helpful.  Still it  is a lousy system to say the least, I just wanted you to know it wasn't calculated the same as FB.

@kzeeman

FB for sellers can have huge impacts.  For buyers not so much.  But sellers rely on good FB for many things.

Ebay has no incentive to encourage more sellers or even to treat the existing ones well. There are more sellers than buyers. The point of all of this tying DSR's to seller's visibility is to limit the amount of sellers on the site. The point of these new and improved search engines is to limit visibility of certain sellers on the site. Setting the system up so only sellers that can reach the magic number of transactions to absorb low DSRs (and in turn get visibilty, lower fees, etc) get all the sales means the pie is unfairly divided up, sales are skewed towards taht bigger sellers, and there is a huge barrier to entry for new competition.

OKAY DOOOUUUHHHHH.
Hello

NO F/B equals a positive.

Screw the percentage number.

NO ONE CARES.

And if you are that close on the percentage, then you don't do this for a living.

Percentage on DSRS is percentage of transactions.  No no F/B = a positive.

YOO HOO?

eBay has done little to actually improve the feedback situation in the years and years sellers have been beefing about it.

I no longer leave feedback first. I ALWAYS leave feedback for my sellers, and sometimes, it'll generate a feedback for me in return. I guess there are programs out there now that automatically trigger a feedback response if you leave them one.

As a seller, when I can no longer warn others of a nasty buyer (like one who wants to replace your new merchandise with their broken one, etc), it rather loses the point. Sellers have no real pull anymore from what I can tell.

So, I've had to just let the matter lie - I don't poke the bears, and don't ask for feedback. Some folks seem insulted if you ask and ding you accordingly.

The last bad feedback I had was because the  seller bought an item on Thursday night and it wasn't in their hands by Saturday. People don't live in reality much anymore, and I've decided it isn't my job to drag them kicking and screaming back there. Twice during Christmas, I upgraded people who waited too long to shop to priority mail at my expense, but STILL did not get any feedback from them. So, I've given up worrying about it. If someone leaves it for me, I'll be sure to leave it for them, and I'll cover my own sellers' backs, but no longer am going to make it an issue in my life. eBay's policies have made it one of the most ineffective systems currently in use.

I leave follow up feedback in all caps warning others of abusive buyers. It shows up better than a red doughnut. Seen other sellers leave a couple ┌∩┐(◣_◢)┌∩┐ too.

Another "skew" on the system is item value ... feedback and DSR value on a 10cent guitar pick or a $10,000 guitar are equal.

Feedback is skewed because it's one way. No matter how inappropriate, crooked or dishonest your buyer is they get all positive FB.

One what planet does that make sense again?

Ebay is the only site that allows blackmail. Buyers, who are skilled thieves, will not blatantly extort refunds from sellers in messages and emails. It is the unspoken threat that hovers over all sellers heads. Feedback is no longer just an opinion but a weapon.
